Video of four violent wedge tornadoes from different supercells in eastern Mississippi into Alabama, including the EF-5 that occurred near Philadelphia, Mississippi, as well as the birth of the Tuscaloosa tornado. Sadly, this tornado outbreak over "Dixie Alley" was responsible for substantial loss of life and property across MS, AL, GA, as violent tornadoes struck Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and other populated areas. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this tragedy.

Tuscaloosa Alabama Tornado April 27, 2011
Live TV coverage by James Spann and Jason Simpson of ABC 33/40 of a violent EF-4 tornado in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on April 27, 2011. The tornado caused extensive damage beginning in the Southwest part of Tuscaloosa and tracked Northeast into a heavily populated section of Tuscaloosa missing The University of Alabama campus by only a few hundred yards. This tornado ranks as among the deadliest in Alabama history with over 65 confirmed fatalities in its 80 mile track from Southwest of Tuscaloosa to just Northeast of downtown Birmingham. This tornado injured over 1,000 people in its path. Recovery and rebuilding will surely take years. Sustained winds ranged from 165 - 200 miles per hour.

Tornado F5 Video, Very Close & Roaring Pass, April 27th 2011 Super Outbreak, Phil Campbell, AL
NOT FOR REBROADCAST
Available for license
Filmed in Phil Campbell, AL
The closest full recorded pass of the Hackleburg & Phil Campbell, Alabama tornado.
The most powerful and longest tornado of the day during the 2011 Super Outbreak on April 27th.
I saw the debris ball on radar coming this way, so I set the camera in the window (in the house) facing the direction I thought it was most likely to pass, then we took shelter several minutes before the tornado hit. (I edited out the beginning of the video before uploading it here).
Email: joshtv5(at)gmail.com
I put a camera on a tripod in the window to record it before we took shelter.
You can here the rumble of the tornado at the beginning of the video get louder and louder as it approaches.
Sorry, the annoying rattle noise at the beginning is an air-conditioning vent.
Power goes off at 0:13 then comes back on at 0:19, it finally goes off for good at 1:08 for several days.
Winds in the Tornado: 210mph+ (EF-5)
The Tornado & Storm Forward Movement during video: 70mph
Damage Path Length: Over 132 miles long
Peak Path Width: 1.25 miles
Some damage facts:
-Ripped a concrete roof off a storm cellar in Phil Campbell.
-Ripped up road pavement in Phil Campbell.
-Blew away a house that had foundation anchor bolts.
-Scoured up the ground in areas.
-Picked up and slammed a tractor to the ground breaking it in half at the main body.
Fatalities from this one tornado: 72
Injuries from this one tornado: At least 145

April 27 2011 Alabama Tornadoes - Radar and Tornado Tracking
Using images from http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/ and data from NWS survey pages, I have compiled a radar loop from the April 27 2011 Alabama tornado outbreak and labelled the image wherever/whenever a tornado was down. Note that the times and locations are not meant to be precise, just a general idea of where and when the tornado occurred. The primary purpose is to show which cell produced which tornado and which tornadoes were down at the same time.
PLEASE NOTE! The Marshall county MCS that dropped nearly a dozen tornadoes in the morning round is only labelled as a complex, since the series of tornadoes was too complicated to track precisely. I will probably go back later and fill them in anyway. I have also excluded a tornado from the noon round in Marshall county because HUN has not yet defined its precise time of occurrence. ALSO, only a few select tornadoes from MS and GA are labelled! Therefore, do not use this video to track tornadoes in any other state until I update this, as I will probably go back and fill the rest in later.
The survey data I used is from the event pages on the Huntsville, Birmingham, Jackson, Memphis, and Peachtree City NWS offices' websites. Also, data is considered preliminary and is subject to change.

April 2011 tornado outbreak - First tornado warning April 14
Footage of severe thunderstorms that produced tornados later in the day on April 14, 2011, in southern Oklahoma. Includes footage of a wall cloud over Davis, Oklahoma, that prompted the National Weather Service to issue a tornado warning at 4:12 p.m. - the first tornado warning issued during the three-day outbreak. The storm formed over the Arbuckle Mountains along a dry line that stalled just west of interstate highway 35.
Other footage taken later in the day shown in this video was shot near Sulphur, Dickson, Mannsville and Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Most of these storms also produced large hail. Tornadoes asociated with this system caused two fatalities in Atoka, Oklahoma, approximately 60 miles east of where the storms began.
