17. Bigger Is Better: The Baths of Caracalla and Other Second- and Third-Century Buildings in Rome
Roman Architecture (HSAR 252) Professor Kleiner discusses the increasing size of Roman architecture in the second and third centuries AD as an example of a "bigger is better" philosophy. She begins with an overview of tomb architecture, a genre that, in Rome as in Ostia, embraced the aesthetic of exposed brick as a facing for the exteriors of buildings. Interiors of second-century tombs, Professor Kleiner reveals, encompass two primary groups -- those that are decorated with painted stucco and those embellished primarily with architectural elements. After a discussion of the Temple of the Divine Antoninus Pius and Faustina and its post-antique afterlife as the Church of S. Lorenzo in Miranda, Professor Kleiner introduces the Severan dynasty as it ushers in the third century. She focuses first on the Arch of Septimius Severus in the Roman Forum, the earliest surviving triple-bayed arch in Rome. She next presents the so-called Septizodium, a lively baroque-style façade for Domitian's Palace on the Palatine Hill. The lecture concludes with the colossal Baths of Caracalla, which awed the public by their size and by a decorative program that assimilated the emperor Caracalla to the hero Hercules. 00:00 - Chapter 1.

Roma - A Night at the Opera - The Baths of Caracalla (07-28-2010).avi
On one of our last nights in Rome we finally made it to the outdoor opera at The Baths of Caracalla. We saw a production of Rigoletto. It was enchanting as the stage was surrounded by the ruins of the baths.

Caracalla kicks off Beiteddine Festival
Lebanon's Beiteddine Festival kicked off with a brand new musical theatre performance by the internationally-famed Lebanese dance troupe Caracalla. According to its director Ivan Caracalla, the son of the theatre's founder Abdel-Halim Caracalla, the performance titled "Kan Ya Ma Kan" is inspired by the history of the Beiteddine Palace itself, a 19th century Lebanese architectural masterpiece, in the Chouf Mountains. Today Caracalla theatre is coming back with a new show prepared specially for the Beiteddine Festival. When you come here to the Beiteddine Palace, you will be inspired to present new and special work. "There are many new artistic aspects different from all the previous shows, but the most important and special one is that for the first time Caracalla is performing with live music, and this really raises the level of art and culture not only in Lebanon but in the Arab world. We've become like any European group" For the first time in the Middle East, a balletic musical production is performed with a full-fledged orchestra. Caracalla attributes its worldwide success to its ability to combine both modern and oriental dance styles in a single performance. The Dance Theatre burst onto the scene in the early 1970s and remains the only theatrical dance troupe in the Arab world. Caracalla put on four performances of "Kan Ya Ma Kan" at the annual Beiteddine International Festival, which takes places from June 28 - July 28 in the Ruins of the Beiteddine Palace. By: Reuters

Terme di Caracalla Roma
Music: Yanni - If I could tell you The Baths of Caracalla (Italian: Terme di Caracalla) in Rome, Italy were Roman public baths, or thermae, built in Rome between AD 212 and 216, during the reign of the Emperor Caracalla. Chris Scarre provides a slightly longer construction period 211-217 AD. They would have had to install over 2000 tons of material every day for 6 years in order to complete it in this time period. Records show that the idea for the baths were drawn up by Septimius Severus, and merely completed or opened in the lifetime of Caracalla. This would allow for a longer construction time frame.

Baths of Caracalla in Rome - An inside view
www.culturaltravelguide.com Ancient Romans were into big productions and the Baths of Caracalla is a perfect example of just how big they could get. As an ancient Roman you could go to the gym, get a massage, get into the sauna, strike a conversation in the libraries or get a bite to eat at one of the tabernae. All of this in addition to getting cleaned going through a succession of hot, warm and cold baths and pools. With the ability to host thousands of bathers at the same time, these baths are a not-to-miss archaeological site in the Eternal City, Rome.
