Expect Nothing But the Best: Novell Patron on LAN WAN Professional
As a career changer, Novell Patron, went back to school to earn his bachelor degree in IT, but found that a degree was insufficient to make the changes he was looking for. He was in need of hands-on experience. "I was hungry for a new career...the value of LAN WAN is that it gave me the experience and hands-on skills to back up what I had on paper. I'm in a great position for my career and I now expect nothing but the best."

Novell Linux 10 xgl Technology Demonstration
Novell Linux has just released this amazing technology demonstration video showing off some of the new features of their impressive operating system. While Windows Vista takes about 500MB to boot this Linux technology can run on almost any hardware. If you have ever seen Windows Vista then you will know it's extremely slow and buggy. It has been in development for nearly 5 years. This Linux technology has only been in development for about 5 months and you will notice that it's running very well. The system used was an old system with only 256MB's of ram. Windows Vista won't even boot on that. This shows that yes you can have awesome eyecandy without having to have 4 graphics cards and a Quantum computer. Linux has yet again reinvented the desktop. Linus has no reboots, not even in installation, Linux has ADM technology which means no need to install drivers anymore unless you want, Linux has SHC technology which means that if a program was to lock up it would automatically fix the program while it's running and carry on. Linux also has no spyware and virus's. Oh and it's easier to install then any Windows. So why do people still use Windows? Beats me!

‘YEKPARE’ (monolithic)
"Yekpare" is a storyteller which narrates the 8500 year story of Istanbul. The story embraces symbols from Pagans to Roman Empire, from Byzantine Empire to Latin Empire, and finally from Ottoman Empire to Istanbul at the present day.
Haydarpaşa Train Station, with its brilliant architectural forms, is the building on which the story is projected. The connection between middle east to west has been provided by Istanbul and Haydarpaşa since 1906. In the 50’s it served as a door for millions of internal emigrants who have triggered the chaos in Istanbul's dialectical daily life scenes. The project's conceptual, political and geographical positioning, the location’s depth of field and the fact that the entire show can be watched from Kadıköy coast; make "Yekpare" a dramatic presentation.
The first day of the performance also marks the 47th deathday of Nazım Hikmet Ran, the famous Turkish poet. We started out with a quote from his epic novel, "Human Landscapes from My Country": “At Haydarpaşa Train Station, in the spring of 1941, it is three o’clock. Sun, exhaustion and rush lay on the stairs...”

They say that we all lose 21 grams at the exact moment of death. They say that it's the weight of the human soul.
Well, it was Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts who first attempted to weigh the human soul. In 1907, he placed 6 dying patients on a homemade scale, which also acted as a bed for the patients. More recently in Dan Brown's novel, "the Lost Symbol", there is a segment that explains how "The Institute of Noetic Science" uses noetics to weigh the human soul. After tests on terminally ill patients, it came across that immediately after death, a person's weight dropped.
So, what would happen if they found a way to contain this invincible mass.. this soul.. Obviously the only reason to do this would be to put it in some kind of awesome robot.. yeah!

Sketch2Photo: Internet Image Montage
Due to a name conflict with a Google SketchUp Plugin, we now change title to Sketch2Photo.
We present a system that composes a realistic picture from a simple
freehand sketch annotated with text labels. The composed picture
is generated by seamlessly stitching several photographs in agreement
with the sketch and text labels; these are found by searching
the Internet. Although online image search generates many inappropriate
results, our system is able to automatically select suitable
photographs to generate a high quality composition, using a filtering
scheme to exclude undesirable images. We also provide a novel
image blending algorithm to allow seamless image composition.
Each blending result is given a numeric score, allowing us to find
an optimal combination of discovered images. Experimental results
show the method is very successful; we also evaluate our system using
the results from two user studies.

YEAR ZERO TRAILER
YEAR ZERO is a modern take on high performance surfing set in a post-apocalyptic world, reminiscent of Mad Max or an HG Wells novel. It tells a story of a band of renegade surfers, including Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Nate Tyler, Taj Burrow, CJ Hobgood and Damien Hobgood, on a road trip through the apocalypse in search of waves, women, and good times. The film’s original soundtrack by BLACK MOUNTAIN, whom VICE MAGAZINE has called, “One of the best rock n’ roll bands of our time,” creates a sonic landscape that fully delivers the immersive experience that director Joe G envisioned for the film.
The film was shot on location around the world entirely in super 16mm film and offers a unique concept with stunning visuals that capture the essence of surfing in a novel setting. YEAR ZERO follows GLOBE’S previous award winning productions such as SECRET MACHINE and NEW EMISSIONS OF LIGHT AND SOUND and is undoubtedly GLOBE’S largest film project to date.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Novell Vibe
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU München) used Novell Vibe to create a web-based platform that gives staff, students and partners secure access to documents, blogs and wikis.
About LMU München
With 45,000 students, 700 professors and 2,700 other academic staff across 18 faculties, LMU München is one of the largest universities in Germany. University Hospital Grosshadern, the home of LMU's medical faculty, is the largest teaching hospital in southern Germany, employing 7,600 people. The University maintains an extensive international network and collaborates academically with renowned partners from all over the world.
Challenge
Like most modern academic institutions, LMU München is keen to explore new ways of sharing knowledge and supporting learning through the effective deployment of IT systems.
"You can think of a university as a loosely coupled network of people who share similar interests and goals," said Dr. Werner Degenhardt, Head of IT at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. "Basically, a university is just a very large community of practice that wants to manage ideas and knowledge efficiently and to foster new learning."
Different departments within the University had already been experimenting with a number of online collaboration platforms, but there was no overall strategy. The IT team in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences decided to take the lead in introducing a standardised solution that would be flexible and extensible enough to meet the needs of all users in the Faculty, and potentially across the whole University.
About ShareOnVibe
When using Vibe for research and education the members of the Faculty spent increasing amounts of time storing web content in Vibe entries.
With ShareOnVibe it is much easier to get web content into Vibe while surfing - just right-click and share into your Vibe target folders. Especially for research it is a real productivity booster because you can do web research and save your findings with comments and tags in Vibe without loosing the focus on your research work. The shared content is available and searchable in Vibe for you and your work group.
ShareOnVibe is a browser add-on (built for Mozilla Firefox) developed by Code and Concept. For the use cases at LMU München it's the perfect solution and makes everyday's work for researchers, IT staff and students a lot easier. No more copy and paste, no more down- and uploading files!
"We see it as the next piece in the enterprise collaboration puzzle." (Christian Giese, Code and Concept)
