AT&T; Archives: The UNIX Operating System
Watch new AT&T Archive films every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at techchannel.att.com In the late 1960s, Bell Laboratories computer scientists Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson started work on a project that was inspired by an operating system called Multics, a joint project of MIT, GE, and Bell Labs. The host and narrator of this film, Victor Vyssotsky, also had worked on the Multics project. Ritchie and Thompson, recognizing some of the problems with the Multics OS, set out to create a more useful, flexible, and portable system for programmers to work with. What's fascinating about the growth of UNIX is the long amount of time that it was given to develop, almost organically, and based on the needs of the users and programmers. The first installation of the program was done as late as 1972 (on a NY Telephone branch computer). It was in conjunction with the refinement of the C programming language, principally designed by Dennis Ritchie. Because the Bell System had limitations placed by the government that prevented them from selling software, UNIX was made available under license to universities and the government. This helped further its development, as well as making it a more "open" system. This film "The UNIX System: Making Computers More Productive", is one of two that Bell Labs made in 1982 about UNIX's significance, impact and usability. Even 10 years after its first installation, it's still an introduction to the system. The other film, "The UNIX System: Making <b>...</b>

DENNIS RITCHIE "UNIX" & "C"
DENNIS RITCHIE: "THE SHOULDERS STEVE JOBS STOOD ON". "It's really hard to overstate how much of the modern information economy is built on the work Dennis did." Dennis M. Ritchie is a seminal figure of the information era, by creating software tools that power things as diverse as search engines like Google and smart phones, he stood astride the digital world like few others. "The tools that Dennis built — and their direct descendants — run pretty much everything today," said Brian Kernighan, a computer scientist at Princeton University who worked with Mr. Ritchie at Bell Labs. "When Steve Jobs died last week, there was a huge outcry, and that was very moving and justified. But Dennis had a bigger effect, and the public doesn't even know who he is," says Rob Pike. "There's that line from Newton about standing on the shoulders of giants," says Kernighan. "We're all standing on Dennis' shoulders." Download "The C Programming Language" by K&R;
Download here: uploading.com For programmers and beginners of C Language for shining career The C Programming Language (sometimes referred to as K&R) is a well-known programming book written by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, the latter of whom originally designed and implemented the language, as well as co-designed the Unix operating system with which development of the language was closely intertwined. The book was central to the development and popularization of the C programming language and is still widely read and used today. Because the book was co-authored by the original language designer, and because the first edition of the book served for many years as the de facto standard for the language, the book is regarded by many to be the authoritative reference on C.

C Programming - Level 002 - V001b
The C Programming Language is one of the earliest programming languages. In an industry where newer languages, tools and technologies appear and disappear every day, a language that has survived for more than 4 decades has to be really worthy. C is a "low level" simple language, that was developed for writing code for UNIX operating system. But C went on to become one of the most successful languages that can be used to create the most elegant of applications and operating systems. Most of today's commercial applications and operating systems have the C language at their core. This tutorial is a team effort by a few individuals who have been using C as their language of development at their work places. This tutorial uses the book published by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie known to C programmers as "K&R" as the main reference point, but also includes the later standards that were included. We use Windows platform to demonstrate our sample code and hence have used tools that are Windows based. However, you should not have any problems in running the sample programs on Linux as well. I will give you details about them as and when we start to use them. We have tried our level best to provide you with a variety of code samples on each and every possible topic related to Programming in C. Finally, this tutorial is for all those people who would want to learn programming in C or for those who would want to brush up their skills or for those who would want to gain some more <b>...</b>

Hello World in 25 languages! (How many can you identify?)
A long time ago (1972), in a computer lab far far away (Bell Laboratories), Brian Kernighan used the words "hello world" to demonstrate a simple "B" program. Since then it has been used in countless computer tutorials as an example of a simple program across many different languages. This video is a small sample of them. This video is PUBLIC DOMAIN and so is the music "Hello World" produced by Dylan O'Donnell and available at deography.com. MP3 link deography.com

The Suburban Players (Buenos Aires) - Suburbananas (1981) (Full Concert)
In 1981,TheSuburban Players (Argentina) staged a musical extravaganza called "Suburbananas", directed and choreographed by Peter Mac Farlane, which became one of the most successful to this day. We have this material, thanks to the good offices and generosity of Martín Larre, who originally filmed it using the first portable camera/recorder ever made. We have full production and performance credits thanks to our life-long friend Sylveen Smith. The sound and video restoration work was a nightmare, but it was worth every second. THE CAST: MUSICAL DIRECTORS: Richard Green - Dick Sturla ASSISTANT CHOREOGRAPHERS: Beatriz Ferrer - Sandy Mullholem - Yolanda Oppenheimer - Marcela Williamson - Kirsten Workman. Google I/O 2009 - The Myth of the Genius Programmer
Google I/O 2009 - The Myth of the Genius Programmer Brian Fitzpatrick, Ben Collins-Sussman A pervasive elitism hovers in the background of collaborative software development: everyone secretly wants to be seen as a genius. In this talk, we discuss how to avoid this trap and gracefully exchange personal ego for personal growth and super-charged collaboration. We'll also examine how software tools affect social behaviors, and how to successfully manage the growth of new ideas.
