Glastonbury Abbey - E017
Glastonbury Abbey ( Mainistir Baile Glas na nGael) is in Glastonbury, Somerset, sasana (england) and was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry viii.
At the time in 1539, it was the second largest monastery in england. In September 1539, thomas cromwell's men arrived without warning and took all the valuables. Abbot Richard Whiting (Whyting) resisted and was hanged, drawn, and quartered as a traitor on Glastonbury Tor on 15 November 1539. Benedict made a second journey to Rome twelve years later, this time accompanied by Alchfrith of Deira, a son of King Oswiu.
On this trip he met Acca and Wilfrid. On his return journey to England Benedict stopped at Lérins, a monastic island off the Mediterranean coast of Provence.
During his two-year stay there, from 665 to 667, he underwent a course of instruction, taking monastic vows and the name of "Benedict".
Following the two years in Lérins Benedict made his third trip to Rome.
At this time he was commissioned by the pope to accompany Archbishop Theodore of Tarsus back to Canterbury in 669.
On their return Benedict was appointed abbot of SS. Peter and Paul's, Canterbury, by Archbishop Theodore, a role he held for two years.
Bibliophile
Benedict Biscop, the Bibliophile, assembled a library from his travels.
His second trip to Rome had been a book buying trip. Overall, the collection had an estimated 250 titles of mostly service books.
The library included scripture, classical, and secular works.

Ecgfrith of Northumbria granted Benedict land in 674 for the purpose of building a monastery.
He went to the Continent to bring back masons who could build a monastery in the Pre-Romanesque style.
Benedict made his fifth and final trip to Rome in 679 to bring back books for a library, saintly relics, stonemasons, glaziers, and a grant from Pope Agatho granting his monastery certain privileges.
Benedict made five overseas voyages in all to stock the library.
In 682 Benedict appointed Eosterwine as his coadjutor and the King was so delighted at the success of St Peter's, he gave him more land in Jarrow and urged him to build a second monastery.
Benedict erected a sister foundation (St Paul) at Jarrow. He appointed Ceolfrid as the superior, who left Wearmouth with 20 monks to start the foundation in Jarrow.
The library became world-famous and manuscripts that had been copied there became prized possessions throughout Europe,
including especially the Codex Amiatinus, the earliest surviving manuscript of the complete Bible in the Latin Vulgate version.
Overview
In Benedict's lifetime he had seen the Church change from being divided between the Roman and Celtic Churches and threatened by a resurgent paganism to becoming a strong,
united and growing Church, united with the worldwide church.
He is recognised as a saint by the Christian Church, which holds his feast day on 12 January.

Glastonbury Abbey ( Mainistir Baile Glas na nGael) is in Glastonbury, Somerset, sasana (england) and was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry viii.

Abbot Richard Whiting (Whyting) resisted and was hanged, drawn, and quartered as a traitor on Glastonbury Tor on 15 November 1539. There is an original letter in the Glastonbury Tribunal signed by Richart Whiting, the last Abbot.
Glastonbury Abbey was an important Pre-Celtic, Celtic, and Roman religious site before the arrival of Christianity. Seems everyone liked it there for their spiritual enlightenment. It also may have something to do with lay lines.
Legend has it that the Abbey was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the first century. Supposedly, he was a merchant trader and travelled as far as Glastonbury for tin, copper, lead, etc. And, he was a missionary on the side. It's a good story since Christianity started on the other side of the known Roman world at the time. This way, he could spread the good news from both ends of the empire. Not only did his walking staff bloom in the ground, but someone seems to have brought the Holy Grail too. This brings us to King Arthur and the Quest for the Holy Grail.
Glastonbury has strong ties to Merlin, King Arthur, and Tintagel during pre-Saxon and Saxon times. King Gwrgan of Damnonia granted the land around Glastonbury to the "old church" at Glastonbury in AD 601 when Worgret was the Abbot.
Glastonbury fell into Saxon hands after the Battle of Peonnum in 658. King Cenwalh of Wessex conquered Somerset. He allowed Abbot Bregored, to remain in power until his death in 669. He was replaced by the Saxon Abbot, Berhtwald. After the Conquest in 1066, the Norman Abbot Turstinus took over in 1086. At that time, Glastonbury was the richest monestary.
In 1184, there was a great fire and restoration work began immediately on The Lady Chapel. In 1191, they are said to have discovered the remains of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. The inscription read: Hic jacet sepultus inclitus rex Arturius in insula Avalonia (Here lies buried the famous king Arthur in the island of Avalon.) King Edward I and Queen Eleanor attended the magnificent service at the reburial of King Arthur's remains to the foot of the High Altar in 1278.
Today, you can see King Arthur's tomb site, the Great Hall Ruins, The Lady Chapel (and St Joseph's Chapel below), the Thomas Becket Chapel, the foundations of the Monk's Hall, Dormetory, the Abbot's Kitchen, The Orchard, The Garden, The Abbot's House, Museum, Visitor Centre, and Gift Shop.
