Mildew refers to certain kinds of molds or fungi.

In Old English, it meant honeydew (a substance secreted by aphids on leaves, formerly thought to distill from the air like dew), and later came to mean mildew in the modern sense of mold or fungus.^[1]

Plant pathogens[link]

What horticulturalists and gardeners often refer to as mildew is more precisely called powdery mildew. It is caused by many different species of fungi in the order Erysipelas. Most species are specific to a narrow range of hosts, and all are obligate parasites of flowering plants. The species that affects roses is Sphaerotheca pannosa var. rosa.

Another plant-associated type of mildew is downy mildew. Downy mildews are caused by fungus-like organisms in the family Peronosporaceae (Oomycota). They are obligate plant pathogens, and the many species are each parasitic on a narrow range of hosts. In agriculture, downy mildews are a particular problem for growers of potatoes, grapes, tobacco and cucurbits.

Household Varieties[link]

The term mildew is often used generically to refer to mold growth, usually with a flat growth habit. Molds can thrive on many organic materials, including clothing, leather, paper, and the ceilings, walls and floors of homes or offices with poor moisture control. There are many species of molds. The black mold which lives in attics, window sills, and other places where moisture levels are high is often Stachybotrys chartarum and is linked with sick building syndrome^[2]. In unaired places, such as basements, they can produce a strong musty odor. "Black Mold", also known as "Toxic Black Mold" refers to one particular species of mold, Stachybotrys chartarum, which grows on materials containing cellulose, such as wood, carpet, paper, straw, or fiberboard. It does NOT grow on plastic, vinyl, concrete, glass, ceramic tile, or metals.

The English word was exported into French as mildiou and as mildiu or moho in Spanish^[3].

Jorge Cervantes at the 2010 High Times Medical Cannabis Cup

Jorge Cervantes is a pseudonym for George Van Patten, a horticulturist and writer specializing in indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse cannabis cultivation. His books, articles, photographs and instructional DVDs have been sold worldwide as guidebooks to horticultural techniques to high-yield closet, basement, backyard, and guerrilla gardens.

Van Patten developed his lifelong interest with cannabis as a university student in Mexico.^[1] After graduation, he moved to California and became a guerrilla grower of "sinsemilla" (Spanish for without seeds) marijuana, the "new" high-quality cannabis that Mexicans reserved for domestic consumption. In the early 1980s, Cervantes started growing indoors, but a lack of credible information about indoor cultivation led him to author Indoor Marijuana Horticulture in 1983. The book became a best-seller, and successful indoor growers dubbed it the "Indoor Grower's Bible" which became the book's subtitle. Today, growers simply call it "The Bible".^[2]

Van Patten (as Jorge Cervantes) first published the book Indoor Marijuana Horticulture in 1983. That first edition was 96 pages, bound by staples, and printed in black and white. Now in its fifth edition, with 512 full-color pages and 1120 full-color photographs and illustrations.^[3] Marijuana Horticulture sold over 600,000 copies printed in Dutch, English, French and German. Marijuana Horticulture has just been released in Spanish, Italian, and in Russian. The book's credits list more than three hundred contributors including Rob Clarke and Ed Rosenthal.

Van Patten has reworked "Marijuana Horticulture" as " Gardening Indoors with Soil & Hydroponics" to appeal to non-marijuana indoor growing enthusiasts. He publishes that title, along with several other books on hydroponics, under his real name.^[4]

In his monthly question-and-answer column, Jorge's Rx, located in High Times magazine's cultivation section, Cervantes provides his solutions to growers problems. He also pens a regular column in Soft Secrets magazine. Van Patten is Bilingual and speaks at eight international cannabis fairs in Europe every year, and contributes feature cultivation articles to High Times, Burst High (Japanese), and other European cannabis magazines.^[5]

The English language Jorge Cervantes' Ultimate Grow DVD I (2006) and Jorge Cervantes' Ultimate Grow DVD II (2007) are training videos for cannabis cultivation. In them, Van Patten (in disguise) tours indoor and outdoor gardens, giving tips and advice for growers of marijuana.^[6]
