Excellent account of the minting of US coins at Philadelphia. Truncated, but the coining process is intact.
'U.S. Mint scales. engraving, etc.
medals and coin samples
diemaking
die hardening
ingots of metal
melting metal in foundry furnaces
making pigs and rolling sheet metal
planchets being cleaned
pennies being pressed in CU
row of women inspecting coins and smoothing them, removing bad ones
men running counting and bagging machines
montage of coins and money at end, incomplete, ends early'
Public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

...The third Philadelphia Mint was built at 1700 Spring Garden Street and opened in 1901. It was designed by James Knox Taylor. It was a block from the United States Smelting Company was at Broad and Spring Garden Streets. In one year alone the mint produced 501,000,000 coins (5/7 of the U.S. currency minted) as well as 90,000,000 coins for foreign countries.
A massive structure nearly a full city block, it was an instant landmark. Characterized by a Roman temple facade, visitors enjoyed seven themed glass mosaics designed by Louis C. Tiffany in a gold-backed vaulted ceiling. The mosaics depicted ancient Roman coin making methods. This mint still stands intact with much of the interior as well. It was acquired by the Community College of Philadelphia in 1973...

...In the beginning, hammered coinage or cast coinage were the chief means of coin minting, with resulting production runs numbering as little as the hundreds or thousands. In modern mints, coin dies are manufactured in large numbers and planchets are made into milled coins by the billions.
With the mass production of currency, the production cost is weighed when minting coins. For example, it costs the United States Mint much less than 25 cents to make a quarter, and the difference in production cost and face value (called seigniorage) helps fund the minting body...
Around 1550 the German silversmith Marx Schwab invented coining with the screw press. Henry II of France (reign 1547-1559) imported the new machines: rolling mill, punch and screw press. 8 to 12 men took over from each other every quarter of an hour to maneuver the arms driving the screw which struck the medals. Henry II came up against hostility on the part of the coin makers, so the process was only to be used for coins of small value, medals and tokens. In 1645 it came into general use for minting coins.
Coining by lever press
Between 1817 and 1830 the German engineer Dietrich "Diedrich" Uhlhorn invented the Presse Monétaire (level coin press known as Uhlhorn Press) which bears his name. Uhlhorn invented a new type of minting press (steam driven knuckle-lever press) that made him internationally famous... The advanced construction of the Uhlhorn press proved to be highly satisfactory, and the use of the screw press for general coinage was gradually eliminated...

The Royal Canadian Mint (French: Monnaie royale canadienne) produces all of Canada's circulation coins, and manufactures circulation coins on behalf of other nations. The Mint also designs and manufactures: precious and base metal collector coins; gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins; medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It further offers gold and silver refinery and assay services.
The Royal Canadian Mint is a Canadian Crown Corporation, and operates under the legislative basis of the Royal Canadian Mint Act. As a Crown Corporation, it is 100% owned by the Government of Canada, which is its sole shareholder. It also serves the public's interest while mandated to operate "in anticipation of profit", meaning that it functions in a commercial manner and does not rely on taxpayer support to fund its operations. Like private sector companies, the Mint has a Board of Directors consisting of a Chair, the President and CEO of the Mint and eight other Directors.
Traditionally, the President of the Royal Canadian Mint is known as the Master of the Mint. The current president is Ian E. Bennett, who was appointed to the position in June 2006 and was re-appointed to a further three-year mandate effective June 12, 2011. The Board of Directors, through the Chair, is accountable to the Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Communities, who has currently delegated this responsibility to the Minister of State (Transport). The Minister serves as the link between the Mint, Cabinet and Parliament...
For the first fifty years of Canadian coinage (cents meant to circulate in the Province of Canada were first struck in 1858), the coins were struck at the Royal Mint in London, though some were struck at the private Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England. As Canada emerged as a nation in its own right, its need for coinage increased. As a result, a branch of the Royal Mint was authorized to be built in Ottawa in 1901...
In November 1960 the Master of the Mint, N.A. Parker, advised the Minister of Finance that there was a need for a new facility. Capacity had already been reached in Ottawa. The Philadelphia Mint was producing a large number of Canadian 10¢ coins...
Eventually, it was agreed upon in December 1971 that the Mint would build a facility in Winnipeg. The land was purchased in 1972 and construction began at the end of the year...
The Mint produces and markets a family of high purity gold, silver, palladium and platinum Maple Leaf bullion coins, wafers and bars for the investment market as well as gold and silver granules for the jewellery industry and industrial applications. The Mint also provides Canadian and foreign customers with gold and silver processing, including refining, assaying and secure storage.
Additionally, the Royal Canadian Mint operates a technically advanced refinery in which it refines precious metals from a variety of sources including primary producers, industry, recyclers and financial institutions. The Mint refines raw gold to 995 fine through the Miller chlorination process. The gold is then cast into anodes which are purified to 9999 fine using the Wohlwill electrolytic process...

Making Coins 1940 Department of the Treasury Bureau of the Mint
This is clipped from the 1940 Federal government film, The Mint, which is an excellent account of the minting of US coins at the Philadelphia Mint. American pennies (cents) were once made of copper alloys, but since 1982 have been made of copper-clad zinc. However, when minting coins, especially low denomination coins, there is a risk that the value of metal within a coin is greater than the face value. This leads to the possibility of smelters taking coins and melting them down for the scrap value of the metal. This problem has led to nearly the end of use for a common base metal alloy for everyday coinage in the 20th century, called Cupro-Nickel (also cupronickel), with varying proportions of copper and nickel, most commonly 75% Cu 25% Ni. Cupronickel has a silver color, is hard wearing and has excellent striking properties, essential for the design of the coin to be pressed accurately and quickly during manufacture. In the early 2000s, the United States Mint took a comprehensive look at its worker safety and health issues and decided to create and implement a Safety and Health Management System for its worksite in Philadelphia. This is the largest mint in the world, covering five acres and employing 521 workers. Management and workers got together, formed joint safety teams, identified the major safety and health problems in the plant, instituted preventions and controls, added or beefed up worker training on safety practices, monitored and charted their progress, and set goals for continual improvement. In the first four years of operating under a SHMS, the Mint saw the number of worker injuries requiring first aid drop from 219 cases to 35 - that's an 84 percent reduction in injuries! The Mint also saw its OSHA recordable injuries fall from 121 to 17 - that's an 88 percent decrease and lost time injuries virtually evaporate, dropping from 86 to 5. The entire 1940 film is in the Prelinger Archive titled How They Make Money, originally titled, The Mint, made by the US Bureau of the Mint of the Department of the Treasury. The entire film shows how money is coined at the Philadelphia Mint. Processes include the making, rolling, and cutting of alloys and the stamping, inspecting, and bagging of finished coins. The film shows the preparation of a bust of President Roosevelt for use on coins and includes external views of the mints at Denver and San Francisco. An exhibit of old coins and coin-making machinery is shown along with Mrs. Nellie Taylor Ross, Director of the Mint, from 1933-1953.
