The Beauty of Buddhist Monks
Bhiksu may be literally translated as "beggar" or more broadly as "one who lives by alms". It is philologically analysed in the Pāli commentary of Buddhaghosa as "the person who sees danger (in samsara or cycle of rebirth)" (Pāli = Bhayaṃ ikkhatīti: bhikkhu). He therefore seeks ordination in order to release from it. He is not thereby a Bhikkhu merely because he seeks alms from others; by following the whole code (of morality) one certainly becomes a Bhikkhu and not (merely) by seeking alms. Herein he who has transcended both good and evil, whose conduct is sublime, who lives with understanding in this world, he, indeed, is called a Bhikkhu. A bhikkhu has taken a vow to enter the Sangha (Buddhist monastic community) and is expected to obey the Patimokkha, rules of monastic conduct (typically around 227 for a male, and 311 for a female) as set out in the Vinaya, although there are considerable local variations in the interpretations of these rules. A novice monk or nun in the Tibetan tradition takes 36 vows of conduct. The minimum age to take bhikkhu vows according to ruling is 20 years counted from the conception (ie appr. 19 years and 3 months from birth). I don't own any of these images and the song.

Mt. Carmel Talk ~ Shinzen Young
Shinzen Young talks about comparison mind and a teacher's dilemma in describing and not describing stages on the spiritual path, and Maezumi Roshi's answer to the question "What is Enlightenment". Shinzen then talks about reaching critical mass with concentration, sensory clarity and equanimity, when impermanence dominates in sensory experience. He then describes two stages of arising and passing, includes Sasaki Roshi's description of the zen approach and his three-dimensional paradigm of expansion and contraction, seeing and participating in impermanence through Zen and Vipaasana and the sensory system, participating in the activity of the Source and how this process arises from zero to create self and world. Filmed at Mt. Carmel Spiritual Centre, Niagara Falls in Nov. 2008.

Commentaries Vs. the Suttas - Which is Right? Bhante Vimalaramsi -- Indonesian Temple.
Here, in this excellent talk, Venerable Bhante Vimalaramsi talks about the differences between Burmese Vipassana practice which is based on commentarial works like the Vissudhi Magga and his more recent discovery of what the Suttas teach. In 1999 he ended 20 years of Vipassana and decided that he still had not found "it". This after 22 hr/day retreats of up to 2 yrs in length with the most famous meditation teachers in the world. In Sri Lanka, a monk said throw out everything he has learned and go back and read the Suttas (Majjhima Nikaya, Samyutta Nikaya) and follow them exactly. There you will find what the Buddha taught, but you must read them with no preconceptions. In this talk to at the Indonesian Temple, in California, he explains what he found and his subsequent meditation practice.
