Perception - The reality beyond matter
Science is a story written by installments over time, and since so much information gets updated these days, I one day found myself wondering... What is "reality"? Is matter all that is real? One thing is for sure - change.
That might seem like a silly question given how we use our senses to interact with 'reality' everyday, but I have since arrived at ideas which I am comfortable with regarding these questions (although Im still curious). So heres some questions to play with - play nicely :-)
If I had to point to where my idea or concept of reality is maintained, Id be pointing to my head - how about you?
Is all this environmental information just vibrational energies which are presented to our body and then decoded to form a perception in the brain according to our programs and patterns? ie: Do we subconsciously 'read' or filter this data then build an experience that seems real?
Can I get outside of my experience to prove anything is fact or real, or is reality bound to ones experience like the fabric to the shirt?
What of the realities I have when I dream, - my body still responds as if they are real, so what is reality?
If I am not the cause (creator) of my experience; the director of my focus of attention on some level whether awake or asleep, am I controlled by something else?
And if I am completely controlled by something other than me, what then is the purpose of my life?
I wish you all - many pleasant realities.
Pete.

One of the greatest beauties in any genre of music is that one track in particular can touch the soul of someone and change their life forever. For Markus Schulz, this hypothesis holds true.
At the turn of the millennium, Markus found himself living in the suburbs of London, on Brixton's Coldharbour Lane, in an attempt to discover his true inner sound. Through his long nights in the studio and attending clubbing nights across the city, such as the iconic Turnmills, he seized various elements that would contribute towards the Coldharbour sound that we love and admire today. However, one track opened his eyes like never before - Cass & Slide's iconic "Perception".
In any subsequent interview he has conducted over the past 10 years, Markus cites Perception as the track he wished me made himself, a testament to how much it has continued to influence him. And in the summer of 2008, Markus made his own update of the track for his livesets that year, in instrumental form.
Fast forward to December 2009, and four days before the historic Best of Both Worlds event in Amsterdam. Longtime friend and one of the leading vocalists across the electronic genre, Justine Suissa, teamed up with Sacha Collison - who wrote the vocals for Perception originally for Naimee Coleman in 2000. And thanks to Justine's vocals, Perception blossomed into life, and many fans of the new generation suddenly realised this track's importance to the history of dance music.
Given his blessing by old friend Peter Martin (Slide), Markus was honored to include his interpretation of Perception on his Do You Dream album. A surprise to many, but everyone across the community were delighted with this development. A staple in his Global DJ Broadcast World Tour sets, Perception remains one of the most requested tracks in Markus' playlists today.
To top it all off, Markus announced during his interview with Armin van Buuren at A State Of Trance 450 in Poland that he had recruited Finnish duo Super8 & Tab for remix duty - one of the rising stars in trance over recent years. Their result is a tough and upfront take on the original, perfect for those peaktime moments in the big arenas and festivals, already demonstrated at Amnesia in Ibiza on several occasions.
Perception is best described as the signature Markus Schulz experience crammed into the space of 12 minutes. It is a track that is so special to him, and a track that is special to so many of his followers.
When the dust settles on the Summer of Schulz 2010, many will remember it as the year the iconic Perception was brought back to life.

The Neural Circuitry of Perception & Genetic and Hormonal Influences on Cognition
A Google Tech Talk
May 5, 2010
ABSTRACT
Presented by Michael Goard, PhD, and Emily Jacobs, PhD.
The majority of the human brain is comprised of a single structure, the neocortex, responsible for a range of cognitive functions, from sensory perception to abstract thought. However, despite this diversity of functions, the neocortex has a simple architecture it is comprised of numerous repeated motifs of a single stereotyped neural circuit. This talk will serve as an introduction to the structure and function of the neocortical circuit, particularly focusing on how it processes sensory input in order to generate cohesive perception of the external world. This will be followed by a description of recent experiments demonstrating how the neocortex can process sensory input in different ways depending on the behavioral state of the animal. Finally, there will be a discussion of how understanding neocortical function will lead to innovations in medicine, computing, and artificial intelligence.
The study of neuroscience is devoted to understanding how the brain functions uniformly across members of a species, but a critical question centers on how cognitive processes differ between members of a species, or in an individual under varying environmental conditions. In short, why do some people excel where others falter? This talk introduces two factors that contribute to individual differences in cognition: genes and hormones. This concept is examined through recent experiments demonstrating that specific cognitive processes vary throughout a womans menstrual cycle: certain women benefit from natural increases in estrogen, while others are impaired. Importantly, the impairing or enhancing effects of estrogen is intimately tied to the individuals background genetic milieu. The relevance of this work to womens health will be discussed. The estrogen-cognition literature (including population health studies on hormone replacement therapy) is famously inconsistent. We can now ask, at the level of the brain, why?
Speaker Bios:
Michael Goard received his BA at Reed College in cognitive psychology, where he first became interested in the study of the brain. After graduation, he worked as a research technician at Caltech studying the physiology of synapses. He then completed his graduate work in neuroscience in Dr. Yang Dans laboratory at UC Berkeley, where he investigated the influence of neuromodulation on visual processing. In fall 2010, he will continue his research as a postdoctoral fellow at MIT .
Emily Jacobs received her BA at Smith College in neuroscience in 2004. She recently completed her graduate work in neuroscience in Mark D'Esposito's laboratory at UC Berkeley, where she was examining the influence of estrogen on cortical function and cognition. In fall 2010, she will continue her research with a joint appointment as a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar at UCSF and a postdoctoral-fellow at Harvard.

Reality VS Perception
http://theGIC.org
Enjoy a trip along the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway as Dr. Bernard Alvarez discusses some fundamentals of Perception. Perception is the process of attaining awareness or understanding of the environment by organizing and interpreting sensory information. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retinas of the eyes, smell is mediated by odor molecules and hearing involves pressure waves. Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but can be shaped by learning, memory and expectation.Perception involves these "top-down" effects as well as the "bottom-up" process of processing sensory input.Perception depends on complex functions of the nervous system, but subjectively seems mostly effortless because this processing happens outside conscious awareness.

Human Perception Viewed as a Phenotypic Expression
Google Tech Talk

ABSTRACT
Visual experience relates the optically-specified environment to people's ever-changing purposes and the embodied means by which these purposes are achieved. Depending upon their purpose, people turn themselves into walkers, throwers, graspers, etc., and in so doing, they perceive the world in relation to what they have become. People transform their phenotype to achieve ends and scale their perceptions with that aspect of their phenotype that is relevant for their purposive action. Within near space, apparent distances are scaled with morphology, and in particular, to the extent of an actor's reach. For large environments, such as fields and hills, spatial layout is scaled by changes in physiology -- the bioenergetic costs of walking relative to the bioenergetic resources currently available. When appropriate, behavioral performance scales apparent size; for example, a golf hole looks bigger to golfers when they are putting well. Research findings, conducted in both natural and virtual environments (VR), show that perception is influenced by both manipulations of and individual differences in people's purposive action capabilities.
