A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Da Nang, Vietnam by TravelPod blogger Emmaandpaul titled "Down to Danang and My Khe beach take 1" Emmaandpaul's travel blog entry: "We got the 8am train from Hue to Danang - we didn't have allocated seats as we have done on previous journeys and our tickets said 'Foreigner' but there were loads of seats and the journey along the coast was delightful. For about 2 and a half hours the little green train twisted and turned through the hills with the blue sea and sandy beaches on one side and hills, lotus ponds and rice paddies on the other. At Danang station we were met with a chorus of taxi drivers, we picked one and he took us to the Tourane Hotel - who didn't recognise our booking, said they only had one room left and that was 700,000 Dong - far too expensive at about 26 quid a night. We walked away and had a little think and a check in the Lonely Planet, then went to find the Golden Sea hotel, which did have rooms and wifi and pleasant receptionists. We were too cheap to pay for a sea view - so we had a nice view of a wall 2 foot from our window ! It was a scorching hot day so we headed out for lunch under an umbrella in one of the many seafront restaurants - The Blue Whale, then we went for a long walk along the shore. The Americans used this stretch of beach for R&R; during the war, they called it China Beach, the bit we're staying on is called My Khe beach (we plan on visiting another My Khe beach a little further down the coast - stay tuned...). We walked almost to Monkey Island, observing fishermen on the beach and birds and people catching crabs. The breakers here are quite fierce and we watched 2 men paddle their round little boats through the breakers with what looked like sticks, very skillful. Along the road back to the hotel, people had set up food stalls and little plastic tables and chairs had appeared. It seems people eat together outside at dusk, with bowls of noodle soup and beers. We went back to the Blue Whale for dinner, but were disappointed by the slow service, and then I saw a massive rat under one of the tables - I've seen much smaller dogs. When we told the waiter he laughed and asked if we wanted a photo of it - apparently rats are quite common here, in London a rat would shut a restaurant down !"
