The Humboldt Current (1)"Can't Be", 2/9/08 at Nightlight
Song: "Can't Be". Sara Morris performing as The Humboldt Current, in a rare show at Nightlight Chapel Hill NC, 2/9/08. Accompanying Sara are, LR: Marc Morris (guitar), Perry Wright (bass), Dylan Thurston (drums), and maybe not visible behind the easel in this video, Langdon Morris (keys). This was a fund-raising event for the new Project Symphony. The venue is dark and cozy, although it has a bit more lighting than the opening group had. So please pardon the amateur video in deference to no video at all! Visit them at www.myspace.com , take a listen and a look around; pull up a chair and make yourself at home! If you'll be visiting central North Carolina, check www.nightlightclub.com for outstanding shows in an ultra-casual atmosphere almost every day and convenient links to the bands that are playing. Humboldt Penguin
Humboldt penguins live along the coasts of Peru and Chile in the aquatic environment, which is cooled by the cold Humboldt Current. Their spindle-shaped body and the wings fins are converted to make them articulate and fast swimmers. Previously these flightless birds nesting on offshore islands in guano caves, but since the guano has been removed, they nest along the coast.

BIG Media Blackout on SNOW fall in DRIEST place on earth!!! 2011
32 Inches Of Snow Falls In Driest Place On Earth! Emergency services were forced to rescue stranded motorists following heavy snowfall One of the driest spots on earth has experienced its heaviest snowfall in almost two decades, according to the Chilean Directorate of Meteorology (DMC). A cold front brought up to 80 centimetres (31.5 inches) of snow to the Atacama desert region of South America forcing emergency services to close local roads and rescue dozens of motorists from their vehicles. The temperature in the Chilean capital, Santiago, dropped below minus 8c on Wednesday. Neighbouring Argentina and Uruguay are also experiencing subzero temperatures. Located in the north of Chile, the Atacama Desert records less than 50mm of rain on average each year. Some weather stations in the region record only 1-3mm of rain each year. The desert is, according to NASA, National Geographic and many other publications, the driest desert in the world, due to the rain shadow on the leeward side of the Chilean Coast Range, as well as a coastal inversion layer created by the cold offshore Humboldt Current. article: crisisboom.com ________________________________ One of the driest spots on earth experienced its heaviest snowfall in almost two decades this week, according to the Chilean Directorate of Meteorology (DMC). Humboldt squid and beaks
My friend HumboldDF collected these Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) beaks for me in 2005 at Shelter Cove, Humboldt County, California. Some unknown guys caught them while fishing. Also shown are a radula, and a pen. The dead one with the shark bites was at Cape Mendocino. These are also known as "flying squid" and "jumbo squid" but they are not "giant squid." They are not named for Humboldt County, but for the Humboldt Current off South America. (Both are named for Humboldt, the naturalist.) The Humboldt squid seem to be showing up farther north and in greater number in recent years -- occasionally in Humboldt County, California too...

(Documentary) Saint Louis Zoo helping Humboldt penguins in Peru
The Humboldt Penguin is found only along the rugged Pacific coast of Peru and Chile. Although most people think of penguins as cold weather birds, most live in temperate or even tropical habitats. The Humboldt penguin lives where one of the earth's driest deserts meets one of the coldest ocean currents. The Saint Louis Zoo and its partners are doing health assessments and censusing of Humboldt penguins through the Zoo's WildCare Institute Center for Conservation of the Humboldt Penguin in Punta San Juan, Peru. In Punta San Juan, the continental shelf comes very close to the coast line creating an upwelling of cold nutrient rich water which provide a fertile environment for the Anchoveta, the primary food source of the penguin and many other sea birds and marine mammals. For this reason the Humboldt penguin and many other sea birds have for centuries chosen Punta San Juan as a breeding site. This has produced some of the most fertile guano fields in the world. The guano also provides a soft substrate for the Humboldt penguins to dig their nesting burrows. For this reason approximately one half of the entire Peruvian Humboldt penguin population calls Punta San Juan home. Due to uncontrolled commercial fishing and guano harvesting for use as fertilizer, the Humboldt penguin population has declined significantly in the past 20 -- 30 years. Today the Humboldt penguin is listed as "Vulnerable to Extinction" by the Red List of the IUCN. Read more about Humboldt penguin ...

Ralph swims in a circle with penguin chums
Humboldt penguins live along the coats of Peru and Chile within the reaches of Humboldt Current, a cold current of water running from the Antarctic to the equator, from which they take their name. Humboldt penguins are thought to be declining in number, possibly due to El Nino increasing water temperatures and reducing food supply.

Also thanks to the Newthinking Store for hosting N✮SQL Berlin!
Abstract:
What Werner Vogels' claims about strong consistency and availability in distributed systems are about.
"If you’re concerned about scalability, any algorithm that forces you to run agreement will eventually become your bottleneck." Failure tolerant distributed key-value stores that provide strong consistency need to run an agreement protocol among a set of nodes. Such a protocol either involves much data to be sent among these nodes, in terms of messages, or high latency due to the number of communication steps between these nodes. Paxos is an example for a fault tolerant consensus algorithm used in a number of distributed key-value stores.
The presentation explains the theoretical background about Werner Vogels's claims about distributed key-value stores with strong consistency. It covers the CAP theorem as well as Paxos as an example for an agreement protocol of a fully decentralized key-value store.
Speaker's bio: Monika Moser is currently working as a Erlang/Ruby/Hadoop developer at nugg.ad. Before starting at nugg.ad she designed and implemented the transactional storage layer of Scalaris, a scalable, transactional, distributed key-value store written in Erlang, while working in research at Zuse Institut, Berlin following her graduation from Humboldt Universität.

Lima City Tour - Lima Tourist Attractions.
www.fertur-travel.com Lima, Its the capital city of Peru, and the only large city on the Pacific coast of South America. With 8 million people living in the rain shadow cast by the Andes mountain range, Lima is the second largest desert city in the world, behind Cairo in Egypt. Its now considered the gastronomic capital of the continent, with Peruvians proud to show off their unique cuisine. Dozens of restaurants serve the national dish ceviche, using lime juice to cook raw fish and seafood.. Its also the birthplace of the novo andino movement that combines ancient Inca ingredients with the latest trends in high cuisine, and Lima now has the most cooking schools of any city in the world, with trainee chefs eager to learn the trade. A string of gardens connect the financial, cultural and tourist areas of the city, leading down to the Parque del Amor at the top of cliffs overlooking the beaches and rolling surf of the Pacific coastline. Paragliders float over the heads of surfers and fishermen who brave the rich cool waters of the Humboldt current for its abundant seafood. Located on Perus central coast, Lima was founded by Conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and was originally known as the City of Kings. Colonial and Republican architecture adorn its streets plazas and churches, from the Cathedral and Presidential Palace on the main square, to the convent and catacombs of nearby San Francisco. UNESCO declared Limas historic center a World Heritage Site in 1988. The city ...
