"Dang" (When) English translation
When the mountain has no edges and angles
When the river water does not flow
When time stops making no difference between day and night
When all things crumble to dust
I still cannot break up with you
Cannot break up with you
Your gentle warmth... is the greatest expectation in my life
When the sun does not rise
When the earth does not rotate
When there is no difference between the seasons
When all the flowers and trees withered
I still cannot split up with you
Cannot split with you
Your smile... is the greatest reminiscence in my life
Let the secularity go with us, have a stylish life
Ride horses and share the prosperous world
Sing with wine and express the joy in our hearts
Live vigorously and seize the youth... (2 times)

Princess Pearl 2 (2/48) [ENG CHN SUB] 1999 Huan Zhu Ge Ge II - 还珠格格第二部第02集
Season Two Episode Two with English Subtitles. Princess Pearl enjoyed the highest viewership of any television drama in Chinese history. Read below to understand XiaoYanZi's word plays and puns.
Princess Returning Pearl, or My Fair Princess, is a Chinese television series adapted from Chiung Yao's novel series. Produced by Hunan TV, the series centres around the legend of Huan Zhu Ge Ge during the reign of Qianlong Emperor.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note on XiaoYanZi's "Word Play and Puns":
1. Exchange between XiaoYanZi and Emperor (09:57 - 10:06)
Yáng Fèng Yīn Wéi (阳奉阴违) is an idiom that means outward devotion but inner opposition. The Emperor used the idiom to describe XiaoYanZi's feigning compliance to the etiquette of kneeling since she was wearing "easy kneel" pads. 10:02 XiaoYanZi misunderstood the idiom as Yáng á Yīn á (羊啊鹰啊) which literally means sheep (Yáng,羊) and eagle (Yīn, 鹰).
2. Exchange between XiaoYanZi and ZiWei (34:35 - 34:50)
"狗嘴里吐不出象牙" pronounced as "Gǒu Zuǐ Lǐ Tǔ Bù Chū Xiàng Yá"
Literal meaning: "Ivory cannot be spit out from a dog's mouth"
Explanation: Good words will not be spoken from a bad person's mouth.
In the above exchange, ZiWei borrowed the proverb to refer to XiaoYanZi as a dog, because XiaoYanZi earlier had used a similar sounding proverb to describe herself as possibly a natural and eloquent orator.
3. Exchange between Qing'Er and XiaoYanZi (31:10 - 31:45)
At 31:10, Erkang described Qing'Er as the Queen Dowager's favorite person (Hóng Rén, 红人). 'Hóng' (红) on its own also carries the meaning of the colour 'red'. At 31:28, Qing'Er replied the courtesy by describing ZiWei as everyone's favorite person by slightly modifying the original word 'Hóng Rén' to 'Zǐ Rén'. Qing'Er replaced the word Hóng (red color) with the word Zǐ (purple color, 紫) because it is a clever word play using Zǐ (紫) found in ZiWei's name (紫薇). Zǐ (紫) also carries the meaning of purple and thus serve as an excellent word replacement for 'Hóng' (红). XiaoYanZi misheard the word Zǐ Rén (紫人, favorite person) as Zhǐ Rén (纸人, paper person), which literally means a person (人) made from paper (纸).

Historical Difference between Princess and GeGe
GeGe (格格) is an imperial rank given to female nobles by the Manchus and in the Qing Dyansty.
During the period of Emperor Hong Taiji's (Son of Nurhaci) reign in 1616-1636, when the Manchus have not yet ruled China, GeGe (格格) was then a very broad imperial rank which included daughters of the nobles who hold the royal titles of Baylor and Kaiko (贝勒爷, 贝勒, 贝子).
In the year 1660, Emperor Shunzhi (Son of Hong Taiji) ruled over China proper and began adapting to the customs of his majority Han subjects. He laid down rules on nobility ranks:
I. GongZhu (公主) Princess are ranks given to daughters of the Emperor.
II. GeGe (格格) are imperial ranks given to daughters of various "Prince of the First Rank" (亲王) and also "Princes of the Second Rank" and below (郡王、贝勒、贝子).
Needless to say, a Princess ie GongZhu (公主) is a higher ranking imperial noble than a GeGe (格格).
1. Princess: Daughters of a Qing Dynasty Emperor, including adopted and foster, are ranked as Princess pronounced as GōngZhǔ (公主). Princess or GōngZhǔ (公主) are ranks limited to the first paternal Aunts, Sisters and Daughters of the reigning or former Emperors. Daughters of a Qing Dynasty Emperor after Shunzhi to the period of Qianlong in the drama and thereafter are historically NOT called GeGe (格格).
In addition, daughters born from the Empress, higher ranked imperial noble consorts and imperial consorts are correspondingly given higher princess ranks.
Gulun GongZhu (固伦公主 gùlún gōngzhǔ; Manchu: gurun-i gungju), translated as "State Princess", "Gurun Princess" or "Princess of the First Rank". It was usually granted to a princess born to an Empress. "Gurun" means "under Heaven" in Manchu
Heshuo GongZhu (和硕公主 héshuò gōngzhǔ; Manchu: hošoi gungju), translated as "Heshuo Princess" or "Princess of the Second Rank". It was usually granted to a princess born to a imperial consort. "Heshuo" ("hošoi") means "four corners, four sides" in Manchu.
2. GeGe: Daughters to "Princes of the First Rank" ("generally limited to brothers of the Emperor and brothers of the Empress") and daughters to other lower ranked Princes, are both ranked as GeGe (格格). In other words, GeGe (格格) generally included the paternal and maternal female first cousins of the reigning Emperor.

Translation Note:
1. "The Great Together" (Lǐ Yùn Dà Tóng, 礼运大同), from 30:02, is a very famous article that almost every traditionally educated Chinese knows. It is a quote from the chapter "The Operation of Li (etiquette or propriety)" in the classic "Li Ji" ("Book of Etiquette" or "Book of Propriety"). Here, Confucius describes an ideal society where the "Great Way" operates.
2. ZiWei told XiaoYanZi that Princess HanXiang is "unusually gifted" at 12:47 using the idiom of "Tiān Fù Yì Bǐng" (天赋异禀). XiaoYanZi at 12:53 misunderstood the idiom as "cookies from heaven" because she thought the word 'Bǐng' in the idiom referred to 'cookie cakes' (Bǐng, 饼), and not the accurate meaning of "(heavenly-天 endowment-赋 of a strange-异) property-禀-Bǐng".

Translation Note:
1.Poem from 04:04.
DuFu (杜甫; Dù Fǔ) was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty. Along with Li Bai, he is frequently called the greatest of the Chinese poets. The recited portion of the famous poem, 'Alone in Her Beauty', is essentially the poet DuFu lamenting about a human being's heartless behavior of frequently discarding old and welcoming new relationships, even though animals can remain steadfastly affectionate.
2. Poem from 12:23
LiBai (李白; Lǐ Bái) was both a prolific and a creative poet, and regarded as one of the greatest poets of the Tang Dynasty. The recited two lines of the famous poem, 'A Farewell to a Friend', is LiBai describing how the scene of two persons parting is so emotionally powerful and saddening that even horses lament by neighing.
3. Poem from 15:20.
A Tang Dynasty era poem, "Song of Everlasting Regret", by poet Bai Juyi (白居易). He describes a pair of lovers that is willing to be a steadfast and eternally inseparable couple. The lovers in the poem originally referred to Emperor Xuanzong (Li Longji) of Tang Dynasty and his beloved Imperial Consort Yang, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China.
4. What is "Unbearing Kindness" at 23:19?
The term "Unbearing Kindness" contains two separate human qualities. The first is 'kindness'. The second, 'Unbearing' (not a real English noun or adjective), describes someone who 'can't bear to, or don't have the heart to do something'.
5. Common Chinese Medicines at 23:36
Nine-Toxin ointment: Removes internal blood stasis or clot.
Purple Cassius pills: Promotes blood circulation.
White Jade powder: Analgesic for pain management.

[Karaoke + Translation] New Huan Zhu Ge Ge Theme (Run to You - Zhang Rui)
I really like this new themesong for Returning Pearl Princess. I heard it's from the same composer as the first song "Tang" so there are some similarities.
As always, the lyrics was written by the author of the series herself and the song sung by Zhang Rui (aka the Fifth Prince) about his love for Xiao Yan Zi.
===========
If you're new to CDrama, you should definitely watch this new remake of the Classic Pearl Princess. It's new and refreshing with lots of mayhem in the palace and added jokes...
Even if you did watch the old version, this remake I heard is 80% new storyline, but keeping the original plot. Though I can't remember much of the old version, but I could tell there were some changes to make the story a bit more feasible.
The casts are pretty young, but they are not so bad. =)

Princess Pearl 2 (3/48) [ENG CHN SUB] 1999 Huan Zhu Ge Ge II - 还珠格格第二部第03集
Season Two Episode Three with English Subtitles. Princess Pearl enjoyed the highest viewership of any television drama in Chinese history.
Episode 3 Synopsis (Read Below):
An exchange of blows between Princess Pearl and a Uyghur guest has led to a new friendship. As a result of XiaoYanZi's admiration for MengDan's superb martial arts skills, she offers to become his disciple. She later returned to the Palace after instructing the LiuQing siblings to take good care of her seriously wounded teacher. Upon their return, they were shocked that their absence had delayed a banquet hosted by the Empress Dowager. Ali Khoja, along with Princess HanXiang, and with his entire entourage have arrived at the capital city. The city streets were jam-packed people everywhere. Among the crowd, MengDan and his friends were keeping a very close eye on the entourage from Uyghur.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Translation Note:
In the drama, the often repeated Chinese terms "Huí Rén" which literally means "Muslim People", and "Huí Jiāng" which literally means "Muslim Territory", are simply translated into "Uyghur".
The word "Muslim" in the above context of "Muslim People" is a composite term that encompasses all the non-Han Chinese ethnic groups (from Uyghur, Kazakh, Hui, Kyrgyz, and Mongol) which populate the geographical northwest region. The word "Muslim People" does not focus on the Islamic religion of those non-Han Chinese ethnic people but rather on the ethnicity of the non-Han Chinese people.
The word "Huí Jiāng", which literally means "Muslim Territory", is a Qing Dynasty era geographical term that refers to the southern region of the Xinjiang province located south of the Tian Shan ranges (天山, Tiān Shān, celestial mountains).
The accurate Chinese equivalent of "Uyghur" is "Wéi Wú' Er" (维吾尔), which was mentioned in 44:42 to 44:44. Such simplifications throughout the series are in place for the sole purpose of minimizing the lengths of subtitle text. The ethnic Uyghur people is one of the major Muslim, non-Chinese ethnic groups that lives in modern day Xinjiang Province in northwest of China. An estimated 80% of Xinjiang's Uyghurs live in the southwestern portion of the Xinjiang region.

Huanzhu Gege is the story of an orphan whose life changes after she is accidentally named princess.
Introduction
It starts off with the tale of two sworn sisters: orphaned adventuress Xiao Yanzi and Ziwei, a talented young lady with an interesting history. Ziwei is actually the illegitimate daughter of Emperor Qianlong. Eighteen years ago, Qianlong had an affair with her mother, Xia Yu He, at Lake Daming in Jinan. Because of political reasons, Qianlong left Yu He, promising to return for her. However, Yu He was already pregnant with his child and waited faithfully for his return. On her deathbed, Yu He asks Ziwei to find her father, Qianlong.
With her servant Jinsuo, Ziwei travels to Beijing, only to discover the challenges of entering the Forbidden City. While trying to find a way in, they meet Xiao Yanzi, a clever and daring girl around their age. Having been abandoned at a young age, Xiao Yanzi lives with her friends Liu Qing and Liu Hong in the Da Zha Yuan. Ziwei and Xiao Yanzi become close friends, with Ziwei moving in with Xiao Yanzi as she runs out of supplies and money. The night after they take a vow of sisterhood, Ziwei tells Xiao Yanzi her mother's last request and her secret mission.
Xiao Yanzi agrees to help Ziwei, and they plan to meet Qianlong during his hunting trip to a local mountain. However, the climb proves to be a challenge for the frail Ziwei and Jinsuo, and Ziwei decides instead to send Xiao Yanzi as her trustworthy messenger. She gives Xiao Yanzi a fan and painting, both gifts that Qianlong gave Yu He years ago.
In the chaos of the hunt, Xiao Yanzi is shot with an arrow by Fifth Prince Yongqi. Wounded and barely conscious, Xiao Yanzi cannot explain her mission to Qianlong, and seeing Xiao Yanzi carrying his fan and painting, he assumes Xiao Yanzi is Yu He's daughter. He treats Xiao Yanzi kindly as she heals, and with having had a parentless childhood, she decides to "borrow" Ziwei's father for a few days. However, she is soon overcome with guilt.

Meanwhile, Ziwei is frantically worried about Xiao Yanzi, afraid that she was captured and executed as a female assassin. One day, Ziwei sees Xiao Yanzi parading the streets with Qianlong in a palaquin with the title "Huanzhu Gege" and believes Xiao Yanzi has deceived her. Hurt and confused, she chases after the palaquin, screaming Xiao Yanzi's name and causing a commotion. The emperor's guards rush to restrain her, but when Fu Erkang, one of the Emperor's bodyguards, hears hints that she might be telling the truth, he rescues her. The Fu family soon learns the full truth.
