It is estimated that one in every 10 Americans have Hepatitis C. Known as "a silent killer," many people are unaware they are infected, leaving them vulnerable to liver damage and other health problems. To help us better understand this, Tarek Hassanein, M.D., Medical Director of Liver Transplantation and Chief of Clinical Hepatology at UCSD, educates us on Hepatitis C, including the latest treatment options, while Stan Miller, respected anchor at Channel 8 evening news, bravely shares the story of his own Hepatitis C diagnosis. JAN 28th 2013
In Devon Nicholson's experimental Hepatitis C treatment update for week 16th he is now two thirds of the way through treatment. Nicholson has 8 weeks remaining on the powerful drugs. Time is moving slow for Nicholson as he is only sleeping 2 to 4 hours a night and suffering a great deal of physical and mental side effects due to the Interferon and Ribavirin medication he is taking.
The update focuses on Nicholson 16th interferon weekly self-injection. After 16 weeks on treatment and undergoing many Hepatitis C related tests since the summer of 2012, Devon is becoming fed up with the seemingly never ending jabs of needle points into his skin and veins through blood work, IV's and injections.
As Nicholson finished his Incivek drug regime 3 weeks ago the unbearably intense itching side effects have calmed down. The feeling of itching however is still present in Devon all the time in a mild way and becomes very uncomfortable at certain periods of time. This skin itching and rash is sometimes referred to as "Riba-Rash" as it is often caused by the Ribavirin medication.
When Nicholson took his first Hepatitis C treatment a few years ago he was forced to stop at week 19 due to suffering a severe "mild stroke like" reaction that caused him memory loss, tingling in his arms, blurred vision, dizziness, vision problems and vomiting. He is looking forward to passing the 19 week milestone during this treatment as the interferon side effects become more difficult.
According to the US Food and Drug administration some of the most severe side effects that Interferon can cause are strokes, serious retinal detachment, body organ problems, eye problems, nerve problems and pulmonary hypertension among a long list of potentially life threatening other reactions.
Devon still has a long and difficult journey ahead of him in his war with the deadly Hepatitis C disease to ensure the medication is effective and he is permanently cured of the virus.

A Special Diet for Hepatitis C: Dr. Joe Galati Explains
In this video, Dr. Joe Galati, with Liver Specialists of Texas, explains a frequent question he is asked. Patients wonder if there is a specific diet for those with chronic hepatitis C? Dr. Galati reviews the answer, and talks about the need for a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh cuts of lean meat. There is no specific hepatitis C diet to follow, simply an unrefined, unprocessed diet.
Advertised diet plans specific to the liver are unfounded. In general, a diet full of fresh nutrients will be best for everyone, not just those with liver disease and hepatitis. A diet of fresh fruits and vegetables will support weight loss, also a benefit for those battling any form of liver disease. Read more at www.texasliver.com and www.yourhealthfirst.com.

Former Pro Wrestler and National Champion Amateur Wrestler Devon Nicholson took his first Interferon shot for his Hep C treatment October 15th under nurse's guidance at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
In this week's video (shot Oct. 22nd) Nicholson self-injects the first of the remaining 23 Interferon injections required for his experimental Hep C genotype 2 Incivek "triple therapy". Weekly Interferon injections are part of the 3 drugs being used in Nicholson's Hep C treatment. The powerful drug regime also includes taking daily oral medication. 6 oral Incivek tabs (2 250 mg/day) and 7 Ribavirin tabs (1400 mg/day).
Nicholson's new treatment is still in the experimental phase for his genotype (genotype 2) and includes the new Hep C wonder drug Incivek (Telaprivir) along with an increased dose of the standard treatment of Interferon and Ribavirin. Although testing is still early in Incivek's effectiveness on Nicholson's Genotype, it has greatly increased the cure rate when used to treat Hep C positive individuals of other genotypes.
Some of the side effects that have been associated with triple therapy treatment include:
- Vomiting, diarrhea, decreased sense of taste and taste disturbances
- Eczema, skin irritations and rashes, facial edema, peripheral edema, pruritus
- Rectal fissure, hemorrhoids, rectal pruritus

JAN 4th 2013
In Devon Nicholson's Hepatitis C treatment update for week 12 he has reached the half-way point of treatment as takes the final dose of his Incivek medication. During Nicholson's 12 week experimental Incivek treatment he consumed approximately 189 000 milligrams of the powerful drug. One of the main side effects of Incivek is that it causes skin complications in almost all patients treated. These rashes can be severe and sometimes deadly. Devon is currently suffering from intense itching all over his body and has developed a mild skin rash reddish in color.
Devon will continue to take Interferon injections and 9 800 milligrams of Ribavirin pills per week for the remaining 12 weeks of treatment. Doctors are hopeful that the itching side effect of treatment will be reduced as the Incivek medication begins to get out of his system. He will still experience some skin problems due to the Ribavirin pills although it likely will not be as harsh.
Reaching the half-way point of treatment is a big milestone and reason to celebrate however Nicholson still has a long and difficult journey ahead of him in his battle against Hepatitis C. If the Hepatitis C Virus is undetectable in Devon's blood 24 weeks post treatment he will be one of the first Hepatitis C genotype 2 patients cured of the disease using the Incivek triple therapy treatment regime.

JAN 21st 2013
Devon Nicholson's Hepatitis C experimental treatment update for week 15 is the most extensive update to date covering a range of important topics.
Nicholson begins the update by letting viewers know that despite getting the blood work results indicating he is negative for the virus for a 2nd time his ALT liver Enzyme levels are still elevated and he has experienced some liver damage due to the disease. Some of this damage could be reversible if he is cured of the disease as the liver is the only human organ able to regenerate itself.
The main focus of this update is the health scare that Nicholson's close friend Wayne Coleman, who is also Hepatitis C positive, was having at the time of this treatment update. Coleman, who went by the professional wrestling name of Superstar Billy Graham, is a former world champion in the art is also a former pro football player, boxer, world's strongest man competitor and bodybuilder. He was the training partner of Arnold Schwarzenegger and won the title of "Best Arms" in the 1975 Pro Mr. America contest.
Graham, who believes he caught Hepatitis C from the unsanitary blading practices in professional wrestling in the "bloodbath years" of the 1970's and 1980's had a liver transplant more than 10 years ago due to liver cirrhosis caused by the disease. He found out last year that his new liver is also in the cirrhosis stage. He had been a hepatitis C advocate since finding out he was positive for the disease.
In early 2011 Graham first became acquainted with Nicholson shortly after watching footage of Nicholson being assaulted with an unsanitary razor blade without permission in a professional wrestling match. Graham sympathized with Nicholson, knowing very well the devastating and deadly effects Hepatitis C can have.
Graham was so outraged at the WWE's inductions of Nicholson's assaulter (who is known to be Hepatitis C positive genotype 2 as well) into their Hall of Fame despite having knowledge of the unsanitary cutting incident he formally asked to be removed from the index of their hall of fame. Despite demanding his removal many times since they continue to ignore his requests.
Most importantly Graham is responsible for getting Nicholson on the experimental Incivek Treatment he is currently taking as it will save his life if it is effective. Nicholson views Graham (also a former preacher) as a hero.
Note: This video contains never before seen footage of Nicholson's trip to Phoenix Arizona in the summer of 2012 to meet with Graham's liver specialist about the effects of Incivek Triple Therapy on Hepatitis C genotype 2 patients.
