The town is also the birthplace of an aviation great, in April 1937 Sir Frank Whittle built the worlds first prototype of the jet engine here.

Southam, Warwickshire
A short tourism video about Southam in Warwickshire.
Southam is a small town situated in the heart of rural Warwickshire.
Its history is believed to date back to the early Anglo Saxon and Roman times.
It was a stopping place on the route of the Welsh Drovers and later coaching routes to London.
Charles I is said to have minted coins here in 1642, and the Old Mint still stands, now a popular pub.
The town retains many interesting historical buildings and has been designated as a conservation area.
The water that flows from the Holy Well was said to have many healing properties.
Visiting it makes for a very pleasant walk in the outstanding beauty of the Stow valley.

The full re-opening of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway - 30/10/12
After over two years, two landslips and at a cost of over £1m, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway finally became whole again reopening the 12 miles from Laverton through to Cheltenham Racecourse. Although regular trains won't commence until the start of 2013, the reopening was held on Tuesday the 30th of October, with the inaugural train departing Toddington at 10:30 behind 7903 'Foremarke Hall', running non-stop through to Cheltenham Racecourse. After the inaugural first train she would take it back to Toddington where Class 37 no.37215 would be attached and they would run top and tailed to Laverton and back. Upon arrival at Toddington 37215 would detach and 7903 would run round to take the next train to Cheltenham. They would then continue in this fashion until 15:30 when 37215 would haul the last train from Toddington to Cheltenham and back. As well as this there was also DMU service running between Laverton and Winchcombe.
Locos in service during the day were:
- BR(W) 6959 'Modified Hall' Class 4-6-0 no.7903 'Foremarke Hall'
- BR Class 37 no.37215
- BR Class 117 DMU no.51363, 59510 & 51405/BR Class 122 DMU no.W55003
Shots include are:
- 7903 takes the inaugural train out of Toddington passing the site of Hayles Abbey Halt, sporting a 'Cheltenham Spa Express' headboard.
- 7903 storms out of Gotherington returning to Toddington on the inaugural train, note the deer jumping about in the grass on the bank.
- The DMU arrives into Winchcombe with the 13:10 from Laverton over Chicken Curve, the site of the most recent landslip and now now finally repaired.
- 7903 departs Winchcombe with the 14:00 from Cheltenham Racecourse with a 10mph speed restriction over Chicken Curve.
- 37215 & 7903 roll slowly over Stanway Viaduct into Cheltenham with the 15:05 from Laverton.
- 37215 passes Hayles Abbey working the 15:30 from Toddington.
- The DMU seen at Hayles Abbey on the 15:10 from Cheltenham Racecourse.
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA Microphone.
Enjoy.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway
The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway which runs alongside the beautiful Cotswold Hills is a delight for the many visitors who discover its nostalgic magic each year. There was a time when this line linked the historic town of Stratford-Upon-Avon with the elegant, Georgian Cheltenham Spa, taking passengers on journey through some of the loveliest countryside to be found anywhere in the world.
Today, a picturesque stretch of the line has been preserved by the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, with steam engines now a regular and treasured sight amongst the rolling Cotswold hills. This programme will take you back to the golden age of steam, travelling between the GWR's headquarters at Toddington, to the authentically renovated Cotswold country station at Gotherington. As well as the spectacular landscape you'll see some of the finest locomotives to be found anywhere in preservation, including wildlife artist David Shepherd's magnificent "Black Prince".

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway - Friday 29th March 2013
With my last visit to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway being 3 years ago back in 2010, it seemed time to have another visit to the GWSR after the issues with the 2 landslides had now been resolved and the extension to Laverton now completed. With new timetables in operation this gave passengers the opportunity to travel the full length of the line from Cheltenham Racecourse to Laverton. However on this visit which was the Red Timetable the railway operated a two train service between Cheltenham Racecourse and Toddington while the DMU covered Winchcombe to Laverton.
Locomotives in use during the day -
|GWR 28XX Class No 2807
|LMS 8F No 8274
|BR Class 122 'Bubblecar
Although bitterly cold with some snow in the air it was a good day all round, it was great to see the Gloucestershire Warwickshire back in action along the full length after the troubles it had to face over the past few years, the gala in May is certainly something to look forward too!
