Substance Dualism (Part 1 of 2) [HD]
Examining the view that mind and body are separate substances.
Note at 7:08 A reductio ad absurdum argument (one which attributes a machine with thought purely for the sake of argument, to demonstrate that genuinely absurd / contradictory consequences follow) would be valid. We can see immediately that Plantinga's thought experiment doesn't achieve this: failure to discern how a thinking machine is thinking indicates only lack of comprehension, not a genuine absurdity / contradiction.
But his use of Leibniz' scenario isn't valid. Leibniz doesn't just propose a thinking machine, but one we can enter and inspect. If physical thinking things are impossible - as Plantinga claims - then whatever machine we conjure up in our imagination to enter and inspect, it can't be a genuine physical thinking thing, just as it would be impossible to inspect a machine that prints square circles. (Besides, if there's truly nothing we could be faced with inside the machine that would signal thought, it makes no sense to ask us to inspect it, since no inspection could help us discern thinking machines from non-thinking ones anyway.) It is this sense in which Plantinga cannot use thinking machines to show machines can't think. His argument is incoherent. It is certainly not a valid reductio ad absurdum.

2. The nature of persons: dualism vs. physicalism
Death (PHIL 176)
Professor Kagan discusses the two main positions with regard to the question, "What is a person?" On the one hand, there is the dualist view, according to which a person is a body and a soul. On the other hand, the physicalist view argues that a person is just a body. The body, however, has a certain set of abilities and is capable of a large range of activities.

Mind-Brain Dualism
Some thoughts about dualism (and they are just some thoughts with recommendations to expert opinions) in response to a video by and a exchange of text comments I had with LegoDesi.
If you get an error message when trying to view the video, either hit the "HQ" button or, if that doesn't work, try adding &fmt;=18 to the URL for the video. One or the other usually solves the problem -- whatever the problem is. Hello, YouTube, maybe this could be fixed?!

Dualism - Mind vs. Brain
Dualism - Mind vs. Brain. Randall Niles delves into the immaterial world of thought and consciousness.
Dualism is the concept that our mind is more than just our brain. This concept entails that our mind has a non-material, spiritual dimension that includes consciousness and possibly an eternal attribute. One way to understand this concept is to consider our self as a container including our physical body and physical brain along with a separate non-physical mind, spirit, or soul. The mind, spirit, or soul is considered the conscious part that manifests itself through the brain in a similar way that picture waves and sound waves manifest themselves through a television set. The picture and sound waves are also non-material just like the mind, spirit, or soul.
The alternative concept is materialism. Materialism holds that everything in our universe is made from physical materials including the human mind or brain and that spiritual attributes do not exist in the universe. This concept holds that our mind and brain are one and the same.
If dualism is not true, the mind is limited to the physical brain. Assuming this scenario, what kind of a mind would we expect? We certainly would not expect to have consciousness strictly from materials. Perhaps we could expect to see a mechanical mind similar to a computer that is run by a program. We would not expect things like consciousness, sensations, thoughts, emotions, desires, beliefs, and free choice. Such a mind would behave in a deterministic way based upon the laws of matter. Many scientists and philosophers are now concluding that the laws of chemistry and physics cannot explain the experience of consciousness in human beings.
We would not expect people with such a mind to be responsible for their behavior because everything they do is determined by the attributes of matter. We all know that is absurd. Also, we could not trust our minds since they are just a random collection of materials not produced by an intelligent mind.

Michael Tooley on Property Dualism
Michael Tooley is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado-Boulder. His main research areas are metaphysics (time, causation, laws of nature) and the Philosophy of Religion (the argument from evil, miracles).
In this clip, he discusses some problems with substance dualism, why he believes in property dualism, and why he does not believe in epiphenomenalism.

Interpreting Descartes Dualism
Mind body dualism:
The only thing I can know for sure, is: "I think, therefore I am"
It is therefore possible for you and others to simply be phantoms, dreams, automatons.
What if Descartes took it one step further? We perceive thoughts, just as other stimuli, but who is the perceiver?
Descartes almost did "Insight Meditation," as it is known in eastern contemplative practice.
A modern problem with the mind-body split:
In current definitions, it appears as if we don't need the observer, the seer, thinkER. We define consciousness by its apparatus (thoughts/feelings).
This raises a slight problem that has more to do with how we are understanding ourselves rather than consciousness itself.
We are still hanging onto the idea that consciousness is an object of attention rather than attention itself.
Note:
This leads to other things... How scientists view consciousness, as an exterior "objectified" thing, while there is also an "interior" dimension, a within of things (Teilhard) that is immanent and universal at the same time. Worthy of another video....

Cartesian Dualism Explained (Descartes' Mind/Body Problem)
Before dipping our toes in Cartesian Dualism, Cartesian Epistemology (study of knowledge) and Cartesian Metaphysics (study of matter) must be clearly elucidated. Because the mind can be proven and the body cannot, it is deemed distinct from one another—least in Descartes' view.

Dualism - Harness the Power of Dualism for Lifelong Success!
Dualism -- http://www.noahhammond.com - Today, I want to bring some attention to dualism and to the dualistic reality that we are currently experiencing.
There is good and evil, hot and cold, right and wrong, man and woman, yin and yang -- all of these dualistic concepts -- how can they empower you with their acknowledgment?
Dualism -- Without A Bad Side, We Can't Appreciate The Good One
The way that understanding dualism can bring success into your life is that it's going to allow you to surrender to the bad when the bad shows up. It's going to allow to surrender to the FAILURES. It's going to allow you to surrender to the ebb and flow of the dualist reality that we live in.
Ultimately, this dualism is creating DESIRES, which create EXPANSION.
If we only had happiness, we would never think outside the box of our current reality to create something new. If sadness did not exist, we would not be looking to create newer and different versions of happiness.
Everybody's version of happiness looks different, but the underlying motivation for CREATING that happiness is the fact that sadness is the other side of happiness. Light or positivity is the counterpoint of negativity.
So, we strive to be positive people. We strive to output POSITIVE change in the world. We strive to make ourselves the best we can be.
But without a downside to that, will we take action in that way? Probably, not!
If we were simply sitting in blissful awareness with nothing but positivity and happiness and NO dualistic counterpoints, we would be of very little action because we would be so content and so present. We would not have ANY desire to change anything.
So, thought would stop expanding. Reality would stop expanding. Change would stop occurring. You know that you are only either growing or dying. Reality would stop to recede.
The dualistic reality, the nature of this world that we are in, propels us forward. It propels us to be greater than we have EVER been before.
When these failures or setbacks show up, or these sad, depressing, angry things come up, understand that they are EMPOWERING you to be able to experience the happy things, the successes, joy, peace, and clarity.
Without them, the positive side could not exist.
It's like a fish in the ocean does not have a concept of the ocean. So if we were nothing but happiness, we would have no concept for happiness. It would only be.
So, enjoy the dualistic reality that we are in.
I hope that that allows you to surrender a little bit more to these bad things that happen around us and maybe, even bring appreciation to them and say:
"Thank you for showing me what I don't want. Now, I know so clearly what I DO want. Now, I am so motivated to create what I do want. Now, I am so passionate about achieving what I do want because I know what it feels like to be over there."
Maybe, you can transition into an embracement of the negative parts of this dualistic reality. Maybe, it can bring you to greater heights than you have EVER experienced before.
That is the main advice from today! Please, if you have any questions or comments, join the conversation and comment below. I personally respond to every comment possible and would love to hear from you!
