Reinbert de Leeuw is a Dutch composer, conductor and pianist. After studying Dutch for two years at the University of Amsterdam, he studied piano (with Jaap Spaanderman) and music theory at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam starting in 1958. In 1962 he passed the final examination in music theory with distinction, and in 1964 gained the diploma in solo piano. From 1963 he was employed as a lecturer in music theory at the Conservatory in The Hague, where he unofficially studied composition with van Baaren.
In his various capacities as a pianist, composer, conductor and also as programme planner and organizer, de Leeuw has given decisive impetus to innovations in musical practice in the postwar Netherlands. In 1966 he was involved in the campaign to persuade the artistic directors of the Concertgebouw Orchestra to put more contemporary music into its programme, and in 1969 he formed part of the Aktiegroep De Notenkrakers (Nutcrackers Action Group) which argued in favour of making Dutch musical life more democratic. The 'Rondom-Concerten' (round-about concerts), which de Leeuw himself organized starting in the 1970s, encouraged well thought-through and thematic programming, particularly for 20th-century music.
De Leeuw became internationally known as an interpreter of the piano works of Satie and late Liszt. De Leeuw has been the conductor of the Schönberg Ensemble since it was founded in 1974. As a pianist and composer he produced exemplary interpretations of the work of the composers of the Second Viennese School, and also those of Antheil, Messiaen, Kagel, Kurtág, Reich, Ligeti, Vivier, Ustvol'skaya, Gubaydulina and the Dutch composers Louis Andriessen and Jan van Vlijmen. His fascination with Satie, Liszt, Ives and Messiaen had previously been apparent from his publications. From 1965 to 1968 de Leeuw worked on the cultural journal De gids. A number of essays written for this periodical were published in one volume under the title Muzikale anarchie (1973). He had previously written the first Dutch biography of Charles Ives in collaboration with J. Bernlef (1969).
From 1968 to 1971 de Leeuw was a member of the Arts Council, the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and a member and chairman of the Amsterdam Arts Council (1967--1975). He was chairman of GeNeCo, the Netherlands Composers' Association (1979--1983) and the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (1986--1992). He was guest artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival (1992) and since 1994 has been artistic director of the Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festival.
De Leeuw is the composer of a small but much discussed output, which developed from serialism (String Quartet, 1963) gradually towards a more neo-romantic idiom (Abschied, 1973). Together with Louis Andriessen, Schat, van Vlijmen and Misha Mengelberg he composed Reconstructie, an anti-imperialist opera with a libretto by Mulisch and Claus. With van Vlijmen he composed Axel (1977), based on a text by Mulisch after Count Villiers de l'Isle-Adam.
De Leeuw received the Sikken Prize in 1991 and in 1992 was awarded the 3M Muzieklaureaat, the most prestigious Dutch music prize. In 1994 the University of Utrecht presented him with an honorary doctorate for his work as a pianist and as a conductor of the Schönberg Ensemble.

Program note (Dutch): Abschied is een stuk waaraan ik meer dan drie jaar bezig ben geweest, maar het is iets dat ik altijd al eens had willen schrijven. Het is geschreven voor een gigantisch symfonieorkest met een volkomen conventionele bezetting, afgezien van piano en saxofoons die erin voorkomen. Verder ook geen eigenaardige behandeling van instrumenten of nieuwe technieken of zo. Het is wel een stuk dat voortdurend uit zijn voegen loopt, het is een permanent soort razernij. Als je de partituur ziet, die begint op pagina 1 en eindigt op pagina 82 en iedere bladzijde ziet zwart van de noten. Het moet in een buitengewoon hoog tempo gespeeld worden, alles is zeer compact. Dat zal het moeilijk uitvoerbaar maken: het is zeer virtuoos voor iedereen. De idee erachter is een beetje een literair idee, daarom heb ik het stuk dan ook een literaire titel gegeven, die verwijst naar de Duitse romantiek, de periode van de Symphonische Dichtung. Dat is ook de ondertitel van het stuk. Het heeft ook die overdrevenheid, overdreven in expressie, overdreven in agressiviteit. Daar voor kies je dan ook een middel als een symfonie-orkest in de vorm zoals ik het hier gehanteerd heb, volkomen 19e eeuws, laat-romantisch, zonder dat er overigens laat-romantische middelen in voorkomen, op een te verwaarlozen onderdeel na. Het is bijna overal homoritmisch, het hele orkest tegelijkertijd, of twee groepen die tegenover elkaar zitten. Wat dat betreft is het een beetje Strawinskiaans, het refereert hier en daar aan de Sacre, als model. - REINBERT DE LEEUW

Reinbert de Leeuw
Reinbert de Leeuw (born Amsterdam, 8 September 1938) is a Dutch conductor, pianist and composer.
Life
He studied music theory and piano at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and composition with Kees van Baaren at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague
He taught at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. He is a well-known conductor and pianist performing mainly contemporary music. He is the founder of the “Dutch Charles Ives Society”. Since 2004 he is a professor at the Leiden University in “performing and creative arts of the 19th, 20th and 21st century".
In 1974 he founded the Schönberg Ensemble. They focus on performing works by the Second Viennese School. For the strings of the ensemble he composed the piece Etude (1983–1985). This is his most recent composition. Since then he has only made adaptations and instrumentations.
Reinbert de Leeuw regularly conducts the Netherlands' major orchestras and ensembles, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, New Sinfonietta Amsterdam, Residentie Orchestra The Hague and ensembles such as the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the ASKO and the Netherlands Wind ensembles and the orchestras of the Dutch Radio. In the 1995-96 season he was the centre point of the 'Carte Blanche' series in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. He is involved in the organization of the series 'Contemporaries' at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

Erik Satie
Éric Alfred Leslie Satie (French: [eʁik sati]; 17 May 1866 – 1 July 1925) – he signed his name Erik Satie after 1884 – was a French composer and pianist. Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. His work was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, Surrealism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd.
An eccentric, Satie was introduced as a "gymnopedist" in 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. Later, he also referred to himself as a "phonometrician" (meaning "someone who measures sounds"), preferring this designation to that of "musician", after having been called "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a book on contemporary French composers published in 1911.
In addition to his body of music, Satie was "a thinker with a gift of eloquence" who left a remarkable set of writings, having contributed work for a range of publications, from the dadaist 391 to the American culture chronicle Vanity Fair. Although in later life he prided himself on publishing his work under his own name, in the late 19th century he appears to have used pseudonyms such as Virginie Lebeau and François de Paule in some of his published writings.

Louis Andriessen
Louis Andriessen (Dutch pronunciation: [luˈi ˈɑndrisə(n)]; born 6 June 1939) is a Dutch composer and pianist based in Amsterdam. He was a composition teacher at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He was recipient of the Gaudeamus International Composers Award in 1959.
Life and career
Andriessen was born in Utrecht into a musical family, the son of the composer Hendrik Andriessen (1892–1981), brother of composers Jurriaan Andriessen (1925–1996) and Caecilia Andriessen (born 1931), and nephew of Willem Andriessen (1887–1964).
Andriessen originally studied with his father and Kees van Baaren at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, before embarking upon two years of study with Italian composer Luciano Berio in Milan and Berlin. He later joined the faculty of the Royal Conservatory. See: List of music students by teacher: A to B#Louis Andriessen.
In 1969 Andriessen co-founded STEIM in Amsterdam. He also helped found the instrumental groups Orkest de Volharding and Hoketus, both of which performed compositions of the same names. He later became closely involved in the ongoing Schonberg and Asko ensembles and inspired the formation of the British ensemble Icebreaker.

Reinbert de Leeuw (1938) Abschied : symphonische Dichtung, für grosses Orchester (1973) Orchestra: Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest Conductor: Edo de Waart Program note (Dutch): Abschied is een stuk waaraan ik meer dan drie jaar bezig ben geweest, maar het is iets dat ik altijd al eens had willen schrijven. Het is geschreven voor een gigantisch symfonieorkest met een volkomen conventionele bezetting, afgezien van piano en saxofoons die erin voorkomen. Verder ook geen eigenaardige behandeling van instrumenten of nieuwe technieken of zo. Het is wel een stuk dat voortdurend uit zijn voegen loopt, het is een permanent soort razernij. Als je de partituur ziet, die begint op pagina 1 en eindigt op pagina 82 en iedere bladzijde ziet zwart van de noten. Het moet in een buitengewoon hoog tempo gespeeld worden, alles is zeer compact. Dat zal het moeilijk uitvoerbaar maken: het is zeer virtuoos voor iedereen. De idee erachter is een beetje een literair idee, daarom heb ik het stuk dan ook een literaire titel gegeven, die verwijst naar de Duitse romantiek, de periode van de Symphonische Dichtung. Dat is ook de ondertitel van het stuk. Het heeft ook die overdrevenheid, overdreven in expressie, overdreven in agressiviteit. Daar voor kies je dan ook een middel als een symfonie-orkest in de vorm zoals ik het hier gehanteerd heb, volkomen 19e eeuws, laat-romantisch, zonder dat er overigens laat-romantische middelen in voorkomen, op een te verwaarlozen onderdeel na. Het is bijna overal homoritmisch, het hele orkest tegelijkertijd, of twee groepen die tegenover elkaar zitten. Wat dat betreft is het een beetje Strawinskiaans, het refereert hier en daar aan de Sacre, als model. - REINBERT DE LEEUW Reinbert de Leeuw is a Dutch composer, conductor and pianist. After studying Dutch for two years at the University of Amsterdam, he studied piano (with Jaap Spaanderman) and music theory at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam starting in 1958. In 1962 he passed the final examination in music theory with distinction, and in 1964 gained the diploma in solo piano. From 1963 he was employed as a lecturer in music theory at the Conservatory in The Hague, where he unofficially studied composition with van Baaren. In his various capacities as a pianist, composer, conductor and also as programme planner and organizer, de Leeuw has given decisive impetus to innovations in musical practice in the postwar Netherlands. In 1966 he was involved in the campaign to persuade the artistic directors of the Concertgebouw Orchestra to put more contemporary music into its programme, and in 1969 he formed part of the Aktiegroep De Notenkrakers (Nutcrackers Action Group) which argued in favour of making Dutch musical life more democratic. The 'Rondom-Concerten' (round-about concerts), which de Leeuw himself organized starting in the 1970s, encouraged well thought-through and thematic programming, particularly for 20th-century music. De Leeuw became internationally known as an interpreter of the piano works of Satie and late Liszt. De Leeuw has been the conductor of the Schönberg Ensemble since it was founded in 1974. As a pianist and composer he produced exemplary interpretations of the work of the composers of the Second Viennese School, and also those of Antheil, Messiaen, Kagel, Kurtág, Reich, Ligeti, Vivier, Ustvol'skaya, Gubaydulina and the Dutch composers Louis Andriessen and Jan van Vlijmen. His fascination with Satie, Liszt, Ives and Messiaen had previously been apparent from his publications. From 1965 to 1968 de Leeuw worked on the cultural journal De gids. A number of essays written for this periodical were published in one volume under the title Muzikale anarchie (1973). He had previously written the first Dutch biography of Charles Ives in collaboration with J. Bernlef (1969). From 1968 to 1971 de Leeuw was a member of the Arts Council, the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and a member and chairman of the Amsterdam Arts Council (1967--1975). He was chairman of GeNeCo, the Netherlands Composers' Association (1979--1983) and the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (1986--1992). He was guest artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival (1992) and since 1994 has been artistic director of the Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festival. De Leeuw is the composer of a small but much discussed output, which developed from serialism (String Quartet, 1963) gradually towards a more neo-romantic idiom (Abschied, 1973). Together with Louis Andriessen, Schat, van Vlijmen and Misha Mengelberg he composed Reconstructie, an anti-imperialist opera with a libretto by Mulisch and Claus. With van Vlijmen he composed Axel (1977), based on a text by Mulisch after Count Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. -

Reinbert de Leeuw is a Dutch composer, conductor and pianist. After studying Dutch for two years at the University of Amsterdam, he studied piano (with Jaap Spaanderman) and music theory at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam starting in 1958. In 1962 he passed the final examination in music theory with distinction, and in 1964 gained the diploma in solo piano. From 1963 he was employed as a lecturer in music theory at the Conservatory in The Hague, where he unofficially studied composition with van Baaren.
In his various capacities as a pianist, composer, conductor and also as programme planner and organizer, de Leeuw has given decisive impetus to innovations in musical practice in the postwar Netherlands. In 1966 he was involved in the campaign to persuade the artistic directors of the Concertgebouw Orchestra to put more contemporary music into its programme, and in 1969 he formed part of the Aktiegroep De Notenkrakers (Nutcrackers Action Group) which argued in favour of making Dutch musical life more democratic. The 'Rondom-Concerten' (round-about concerts), which de Leeuw himself organized starting in the 1970s, encouraged well thought-through and thematic programming, particularly for 20th-century music.
De Leeuw became internationally known as an interpreter of the piano works of Satie and late Liszt. De Leeuw has been the conductor of the Schönberg Ensemble since it was founded in 1974. As a pianist and composer he produced exemplary interpretations of the work of the composers of the Second Viennese School, and also those of Antheil, Messiaen, Kagel, Kurtág, Reich, Ligeti, Vivier, Ustvol'skaya, Gubaydulina and the Dutch composers Louis Andriessen and Jan van Vlijmen. His fascination with Satie, Liszt, Ives and Messiaen had previously been apparent from his publications. From 1965 to 1968 de Leeuw worked on the cultural journal De gids. A number of essays written for this periodical were published in one volume under the title Muzikale anarchie (1973). He had previously written the first Dutch biography of Charles Ives in collaboration with J. Bernlef (1969).
From 1968 to 1971 de Leeuw was a member of the Arts Council, the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and a member and chairman of the Amsterdam Arts Council (1967--1975). He was guest artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival (1992) and since 1994 has been artistic director of the Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festival.

With van Vlijmen he composed Axel (1977), based on a text by Mulisch after Count Villiers de l'Isle-Adam.

Program note (Dutch): Abschied is een stuk waaraan ik meer dan drie jaar bezig ben geweest, maar het is iets dat ik altijd al eens had willen schrijven. Het is geschreven voor een gigantisch symfonieorkest met een volkomen conventionele bezetting, afgezien van piano en saxofoons die erin voorkomen. Verder ook geen eigenaardige behandeling van instrumenten of nieuwe technieken of zo. Het is wel een stuk dat voortdurend uit zijn voegen loopt, het is een permanent soort razernij. Als je de partituur ziet, die begint op pagina 1 en eindigt op pagina 82 en iedere bladzijde ziet zwart van de noten. Het moet in een buitengewoon hoog tempo gespeeld worden, alles is zeer compact. Dat zal het moeilijk uitvoerbaar maken: het is zeer virtuoos voor iedereen. De idee erachter is een beetje een literair idee, daarom heb ik het stuk dan ook een literaire titel gegeven, die verwijst naar de Duitse romantiek, de periode van de Symphonische Dichtung. Dat is ook de ondertitel van het stuk. Het heeft ook die overdrevenheid, overdreven in expressie, overdreven in agressiviteit. Daar voor kies je dan ook een middel als een symfonie-orkest in de vorm zoals ik het hier gehanteerd heb, volkomen 19e eeuws, laat-romantisch, zonder dat er overigens laat-romantische middelen in voorkomen, op een te verwaarlozen onderdeel na. Het is bijna overal homoritmisch, het hele orkest tegelijkertijd, of twee groepen die tegenover elkaar zitten. Reinbert de Leeuw (1938) Abschied : symphonische Dichtung, für grosses Orchester (1973) Orchestra: Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest Conductor: Edo de Waart Program note (Dutch): Abschied is een stuk waaraan ik meer dan drie jaar bezig ben geweest, maar het is iets dat ik altijd al eens had willen schrijven. Het is geschreven voor een gigantisch symfonieorkest met een volkomen conventionele bezetting, afgezien van piano en saxofoons die erin voorkomen. Verder ook geen eigenaardige behandeling van instrumenten of nieuwe technieken of zo. Het is wel een stuk dat voortdurend uit zijn voegen loopt, het is een permanent soort razernij. Als je de partituur ziet, die begint op pagina 1 en eindigt op pagina 82 en iedere bladzijde ziet zwart van de noten. Het moet in een buitengewoon hoog tempo ...

Reinbert de Leeuw is a Dutch composer, conductor and pianist. After studying Dutch for two years at the University of Amsterdam, he studied piano (with Jaap Spaanderman) and music theory at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam starting in 1958. In 1962 he passed the final examination in music theory with distinction, and in 1964 gained the diploma in solo piano. From 1963 he was employed as a lecturer in music theory at the Conservatory in The Hague, where he unofficially studied composition with van Baaren.
In his various capacities as a pianist, composer, conductor and also as programme planner and organizer, de Leeuw has given decisive impetus to innovations in musical practice in the postwar Netherlands. In 1966 he was involved in the campaign to persuade the artistic directors of the Concertgebouw Orchestra to put more contemporary music into its programme, and in 1969 he formed part of the Aktiegroep De Notenkrakers (Nutcrackers Action Group) which argued in favour of making Dutch musical life more democratic. The 'Rondom-Concerten' (round-about concerts), which de Leeuw himself organized starting in the 1970s, encouraged well thought-through and thematic programming, particularly for 20th-century music.
De Leeuw became internationally known as an interpreter of the piano works of Satie and late Liszt. De Leeuw has been the conductor of the Schönberg Ensemble since it was founded in 1974. As a pianist and composer he produced exemplary interpretations of the work of the composers of the Second Viennese School, and also those of Antheil, Messiaen, Kagel, Kurtág, Reich, Ligeti, Vivier, Ustvol'skaya, Gubaydulina and the Dutch composers Louis Andriessen and Jan van Vlijmen. His fascination with Satie, Liszt, Ives and Messiaen had previously been apparent from his publications. From 1965 to 1968 de Leeuw worked on the cultural journal De gids. A number of essays written for this periodical were published in one volume under the title Muzikale anarchie (1973). He had previously written the first Dutch biography of Charles Ives in collaboration with J. Bernlef (1969).
From 1968 to 1971 de Leeuw was a member of the Arts Council, the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and a member and chairman of the Amsterdam Arts Council (1967--1975). He was chairman of GeNeCo, the Netherlands Composers' Association (1979--1983) and the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (1986--1992). He was guest artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival (1992) and since 1994 has been artistic director of the Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festival.
De Leeuw is the composer of a small but much discussed output, which developed from serialism (String Quartet, 1963) gradually towards a more neo-romantic idiom (Abschied, 1973). Together with Louis Andriessen, Schat, van Vlijmen and Misha Mengelberg he composed Reconstructie, an anti-imperialist opera with a libretto by Mulisch and Claus. With van Vlijmen he composed Axel (1977), based on a text by Mulisch after Count Villiers de l'Isle-Adam.
De Leeuw received the Sikken Prize in 1991 and in 1992 was awarded the 3M Muzieklaureaat, the most prestigious Dutch music prize. In 1994 the University of Utrecht presented him with an honorary doctorate for his work as a pianist and as a conductor of the Schönberg Ensemble.

Dat zal het moeilijk uitvoerbaar maken: het is zeer virtuoos voor iedereen. De idee erachter is een beetje een literair idee, daarom heb ik het stuk dan ook een literaire titel gegeven, die verwijst naar de Duitse romantiek, de periode van de Symphonische Dichtung. Dat is ook de ondertitel van het stuk. Het heeft ook die overdrevenheid, overdreven in expressie, overdreven in agressiviteit. Daar voor kies je dan ook een middel als een symfonie-orkest in de vorm zoals ik het hier gehanteerd heb, volkomen 19e eeuws, laat-romantisch, zonder dat er overigens laat-romantische middelen in voorkomen, op een te verwaarlozen onderdeel na. Het is bijna overal homoritmisch, het hele orkest tegelijkertijd, of twee groepen die tegenover elkaar zitten. Wat dat betreft is het een beetje Strawinskiaans, het refereert hier en daar aan de Sacre, als model. - REINBERT DE LEEUW

Reinbert de Leeuw is a Dutch composer, conductor and pianist. After studying Dutch for two years at the University of Amsterdam, he studied piano (with Jaap Spaanderman) and music theory at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam starting in 1958. In 1962 he passed the final examination in music theory with distinction, and in 1964 gained the diploma in solo piano. From 1963 he was employed as a lecturer in music theory at the Conservatory in The Hague, where he unofficially studied composition with van Baaren.
In his various capacities as a pianist, composer, conductor and also as programme planner and organizer, de Leeuw has given decisive impetus to innovations in musical practice in the postwar Netherlands. In 1966 he was involved in the campaign to persuade the artistic directors of the Concertgebouw Orchestra to put more contemporary music into its programme, and in 1969 he formed part of the Aktiegroep De Notenkrakers (Nutcrackers Action Group) which argued in favour of making Dutch musical life more democratic. The 'Rondom-Concerten' (round-about concerts), which de Leeuw himself organized starting in the 1970s, encouraged well thought-through and thematic programming, particularly for 20th-century music.
De Leeuw became internationally known as an interpreter of the piano works of Satie and late Liszt. De Leeuw has been the conductor of the Schönberg Ensemble since it was founded in 1974. As a pianist and composer he produced exemplary interpretations of the work of the composers of the Second Viennese School, and also those of Antheil, Messiaen, Kagel, Kurtág, Reich, Ligeti, Vivier, Ustvol'skaya, Gubaydulina and the Dutch composers Louis Andriessen and Jan van Vlijmen. His fascination with Satie, Liszt, Ives and Messiaen had previously been apparent from his publications. From 1965 to 1968 de Leeuw worked on the cultural journal De gids. A number of essays written for this periodical were published in one volume under the title Muzikale anarchie (1973). He had previously written the first Dutch biography of Charles Ives in collaboration with J. Bernlef (1969).
From 1968 to 1971 de Leeuw was a member of the Arts Council, the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and a member and chairman of the Amsterdam Arts Council (1967--1975). He was chairman of GeNeCo, the Netherlands Composers' Association (1979--1983) and the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (1986--1992). He was guest artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival (1992) and since 1994 has been artistic director of the Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festival.
De Leeuw is the composer of a small but much discussed output, which developed from serialism (String Quartet, 1963) gradually towards a more neo-romantic idiom (Abschied, 1973). Together with Louis Andriessen, Schat, van Vlijmen and Misha Mengelberg he composed Reconstructie, an anti-imperialist opera with a libretto by Mulisch and Claus. With van Vlijmen he composed Axel (1977), based on a text by Mulisch after Count Villiers de l'Isle-Adam.
