The best greatest international players ever to step onto a basketball court, Hortencia de Fatima Marcari began playing for her native Brazil at the tender age of 15 when she was added to the national team roster after showing enormous potential. The girl who would soon be known simply as Hortencia in basketball circles was a nightmare to guard, constantly seeking out holes in the defense, perpetually moving around the court, and relentlessly scoring the basketball. The Brazilian national team began winning with Hortencia in the lineup finishing third, second, and first in the 1981, 1987, and 1991 Pan-American Games respectively. Hortencia then led Brazil to the gold medal at the 1994 World Championships, averaging better than 27 points per game. She retired shortly after the 1994 Worlds, but came out of retirement two years later to help Brazil capture the silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games.

In Brazil, they simply refer to her as Hortencia.
She might not be as well known as that country's legendary soccer star, Pele. But Hortencia Marcara, the explosive 5-8 guard on the Brazilian basketball team, is generally regarded as the best women's player in South America, and possibly the best in the Pan American Games.
"She basically goes by one name," U.S. coach Jody Conradt said. "That gives you a clue as to how good she is. I can only think of Pele, Reggie and Hortencia."
Hortencia established herself as a world presence at the 1983 Pan Am when she dropped 48 points on the U.S. in Caracas, Venezuela. She tortured a touring University of Tennessee team in June, scoring 43 points during a 100-82 victory over the defending NCAA champions.
"She's the best shooter I've ever seen," Conradt said after watching Marcari shoot 16-for-22 and score 37 points during a 69-point route of hapless Peru. "She's the most exciting player in the world..
Hortencia already has destroyed a lot of teams in her native country, where the talent pool is limited. She recently scored an eye-opening 124 points during a 252-31 victory in a tournament held at Sao Paulo State.
Hortencia plays for Minercal, a club team sponsored by a lime-producing factory in her hometown of Sorocaba.
Sorocaba is a city of 100,000, located in the interior of the Southeast region. But Hortencia has put it on the map. According to Brazilian journalists covering the tournament, she earns the equivalent of $40,000 a year, which is roughly 100 times the average annual wage.
Hortencia is 27 years old. She is the youngest of seven children. She started playing at age 13 and had to develop on her own since none of her siblings ever competed in the sport.
Hortencia works as a recreation leader and helps support her parents, who are retired. She practices five hours a day.
"My life is basketball," she said through an interpreter.
She and Oscar Schmidt of the unbeaten Brazilian men's team have helped keep basketball alive in a country where the popularity of the sport is slipping. Volleyball is taking over, particularly in the bigger cities. But Hortencia could become as big a story as the Brazilian men's volleyball team if her team wins a gold medal here.
Hortencia is a pure shooting guard with range that routinely extends beyond the international 20-feet, 6-inch three-point line.
"She makes points naturally," Brazilian coach Maria Helena Cardoso said.
"I hate it when people think I have to score points," Hortencia said. ''I'm not preoccupied with that."
There are some, like Edwards, who would disagree. Edwards stopped just short of calling Hortencia a gunner.
"If I was on their team and could shoot full-time and never worry about anybody else's feelings, that would be great. I don't fear Brazil. I fear Hortencia."
Hortencia will try to reload here, provided her ankles hold up. She sprained both of them earlier this week.
"I spent an entire day and entire night just icing them down," she said. ''I want to play."
Fortunately for Brazil, Hortencia is not a one-woman team. Lead guard Paula Silva, her teammate, is equally well-known back home, according to Cardoso.

Hortência fala rápido, se mexe rápido. Apesar da aparência da dirigente lembrar pouco a jogadora de rabo de cavalo com fios soltos no rosto, o jeito simpático e o gosto por prosear continuam intactos.
Ela fala de Vanderlei Cordeiro, Fidel Castro, Olimpíadas, Mundial, mas refletindo sobre esporte e competição era impossível não pensar sobre Paula. E quando Hortência acha a deixa, a fala vem com uma intensidade, que só quem já teve uma grande adversária que virou parceira pode falar. É quase como um espelho, uma referência para medir a própria habilidade, para se entender.
Lembro de ter lido há muito tempo uma crônica sobre a Hortência, feita pelo Armando Nogueira e em um certo trecho, ele usava a frase “um olho na bola, outro na Paula”. Nunca me esqueci desta bela frase. Pelo jeito, Hortência também não.

Like other famous Brazilian athletes -- Pele in soccer, Oscar in basketball -- both are known by one name: Hortencia and Magic Paula, something like Magic and Michael both trying to lead a United States men's basketball team.
Hortência Maria de Fátima Marcari born September 23, 1959 INDIANAPOLIS,
Except for a blue ribbon tied just under the right knee, there is nothing about her appearance that suggests athletic majesty. She is not that tall, a stringy 5 feet 8 inches, her hands are not exceptionally large and her physique isn't particularly imposing.
In fact, most people would look at her and never guess she is a national sports heroine.
Bring up basketball, however, or tell her that the United States is favored to win the women's competition at the Pan American Games, and it turns around. The eyes narrow, the face tightens, the smile disappears.
For the last 11 years, Hortencia Marcari has delighted audiences and punctured defenses with pinpoint shooting and acrobatic drives to the basket. But for all of the manuevers, the thing that makes Hortencia - like many Brazilian athletes, she uses only a single name - such a ferocious competitor is her approach to the game. She has adopted what United States players refer to as a ''playground head'' - aggression as well as flair. 'I Love the Challenge'
''The thing I love most about basketball is the competition,'' she said. As she talks her open hand becomes a fist. She leans forward and makes her point with animated body movements, as if she were moving through a series of picks for an open jump shot. ''I love the challenge,'' she said. ''The individual against the individual.''
Against Peru in Brazil's opening-round game today, the 27-year-old guard, playing on a sore left ankle, scored 37 points as Brazil won, 117-48.
Hortencia seized control of the game in the opening minutes. Disgusted after letting a pass slip through her hands, she grabbed the loose ball and angrily flipped it back to where she thought the official was standing. The ball smacked a Peruvian player in the face and floored her. Hortencia. expressionless, looked down, extended a hand, shrugged and headed down the court. She would be involved in three violent collisions, each time springing up and going about the business of playing basketball.
''She's so exciting to watch,'' said Teresa Edwards, the explosive point guard on the United States team. Edwards, a 5-11 senior at Georgia, recalled trying to guard Hortencia in 1983.
''I didn't stop her - the entire team had to stop her,'' Edwards said. ''We designed a crazy defense for her -like three people playing zone, two people playing her. She's quick and she's always moving. And she's a tremendous shooter. She can shoot the daylights out of the ball.'' 120 Points in One Game Last month, in the Sao Paulo city championship, Hortencia scored 120 points in her team's 251-27 victory.
A more realistic measure of her talent came last June in a game against Tennessee, the defending women's National Collegiate Athletic Association champion. Hortencia made 10 of 14 shots from the field and scored 34 points as Brazil routed the Lady Vols, 105-68.
''She's just so great without the ball, she really reminds me of Larry Bird,'' said Pat Summitt, the Tennessee head coach. ''It's what she does on offense without the ball that makes the difference.''
The meeting between Brazil and the United States here Saturday will be a much stiffer test and one of the classic matches of the Pan Am games.
Wilt Chamberlain was born on August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known as "Wilt the Stilt" for his 7'1" frame, Chamberlain was a Harlem Globetrotter before joining the Philadelphia Warriors. He achieved an average of 30.1 points per game over his career and holds several records, including for most points scored in one season (4,029) in March 2, 1962 he scored in a single game (100). Chamberlain was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. He died in Bel-Air, California, in 1999.

Hortência Marcari
Hortência Maria de Fátima Marcari (born September 23, 1959) is a former basketball player who is often considered to be one of the greatest female basketball players in Brazil, along with Paula, and regarded by specialists as one of the world's greatest female basketball players of all time. Marcari is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (inducted in 2002), the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (inducted in 2005), and FIBA Hall of Fame (inducted in 2007). She is known in her country as Hortência, and her nickname is The Queen.
Biography
Born in Potirendaba, São Paulo, Brazil, Hortência is of Italian background, her grandparents having moved to Brazil from that European nation. Hortência's father was a laborer.
When Hortência was ten years old, her family moved to São Paulo, and Hortência became interested in sports. Her family disapproved of her choice to play sports, since her father had been disabled on the field and they wanted her to work bringing home part of the earnings her father used to. But they eventually gave up trying to keep her from her favorite activity.

Hall of fame
A hall of fame is a structure housing memorials to famous or illustrious individuals in a certain field, usually chosen by a group of electors. The meaning of "fame" has changed over the years, originally meaning "renown" as opposed to today's more common meaning of "celebrity".
In some cases, these halls of fame consist of actual halls or museums which enshrine the honorees with sculptures, plaques, and displays of memorabilia and general information regarding the inducted recipient/s. Sometimes, the honorees' plaques may instead be posted on a wall (hence a '"wall of fame") or inscribed on a sidewalk (as in a "walk of fame" or an "avenue of fame"). Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is an American history museum and hall of fame, located at 1000 Hall of Fame Avenue in Springfield, Massachusetts. It serves as the sport's most complete library, in addition to promoting and preserving the history of basketball. Dedicated to Canadian doctor and inventor of the sport James Naismith, it was opened in, and inducted its first class in 1959.
As of September 11, 2015, when the induction ceremony took place, the Basketball Hall of Fame had honored 345 individuals and 10 teams.
History of the Springfield building
The Naismith Hall of Fame was established in 1959 by Lee Williams, a former athletic director at Colby College. In the 1960s, the Basketball Hall of Fame struggled to raise enough money for the construction of its first facility. However, during the following half a decade, the necessary amount was raised and the building opened on Feb. 17, 1968, less than one month after the National Basketball Association played its 18th All-Star Game. The Basketball Hall of Fame's Board named four inductees in its first year. In addition to honoring those who contributed to basketball, the Hall of Fame sought to make contributions of its own. In 1979, the Hall of Fame sponsored the Tip-Off Classic, a pre-season college basketball exhibition. This Tip-Off Classic has been the start to the college basketball season ever since - and although it does not always take place in Springfield, Massachusetts, generally it returns every few years.

Michael Jordan
Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963), also known by his initials, MJ, is an American former professional basketball player. He is also a businessman, and principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan played 15 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards. His biography on the NBA website states: "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." Jordan was one of the most effectively marketed athletes of his generation and was considered instrumental in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.
After a three-season stint playing for coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of the Tar Heels' national championship team in 1982, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as a league star, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, illustrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness". He also gained a reputation for being one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat". She recently scored an eye-opening 124 points during a 252-31 victory in a tournament held at Sao Paulo State. Hortencia plays for Minercal, a club team sponsored by a lime-producing factory in her hometown of Sorocaba. Sorocaba is a city of 100,000, located in the interior of the Southeast region. But Hortencia has put it on the map. According to Brazilian journalists covering the tournament, she earns the equivalent of $40,000 a year, which is roughly 100 times the average annual wage. Hortencia is 27 years old. She is the youngest of seven children. She started playing at age 13 and had to develop on her own since none of her siblings ever competed in the sport. Hortencia works as a recreation leader and helps support her parents, who are retired. She practices five hours a day. "My life is basketball," she said through an interpreter. She and Oscar Schmidt of the unbeaten Brazilian men's team have helped keep basketball alive in a country where the popularity of the sport is slipping. Volleyball is taking over, particularly in the bigger cities. But Hortencia could become as big a story as the Brazilian men's volleyball team if her team wins a gold medal here. Hortencia is a pure shooting guard with range that routinely extends beyond the international 20-feet, 6-inch three-point line. "She makes points naturally," Brazilian coach Maria Helena Cardoso said. "I hate it when people think I have to score points," Hortencia said. ''I'm not preoccupied with that." There are some, like Edwards, who would disagree. Edwards stopped just short of calling Hortencia a gunner. "If I was on their team and could shoot full-time and never worry about anybody else's feelings, that would be great. I don't fear Brazil. I fear Hortencia." Hortencia will try to reload here, provided her ankles hold up. She sprained both of them earlier this week. "I spent an entire day and entire night just icing them down," she said. Hortência Maria de Fátima Marcari born September 23, 1959 INDIANAPOLIS, Except for a blue ribbon tied just under the right knee, there is nothing about her appearance that suggests athletic majesty. She is not that tall, a stringy 5 feet 8 inches, her hands are not exceptionally large and her physique isn't particularly imposing. In fact, most people would look at her and never guess she is a national sports heroine. Bring up basketball, however, or tell her that the United States is favored to win the women's competition at the Pan American Games, and it turns around. The eyes narrow, the face tightens, the smile disappears. For the last 11 years, Hortencia Marcari has delighted audiences and punctured defenses with pinpoint shooting and acrobatic drives to the basket. But for all of the manuevers, the thing that makes Hortencia - like many Brazilian athletes, she uses only a single name - such a ferocious competitor is her approach to the game. She has adopted what United States players refer to as a ''playground head'' - aggression as well as flair. 'I Love the Challenge' ''The thing I love most about basketball is the competition,'' she said. As she talks her open hand becomes a fist. She leans forward and makes her point with animated body movements, as if she were moving through a series of picks for an open jump shot. ''I love the challenge,'' she said. ''The individual against the individual.'' Against Peru in Brazil's opening-round game today, the 27-year-old guard, playing on a sore left ankle, scored 37 points as Brazil won, 117-48. Hortencia seized control of the game in the opening minutes. Disgusted after letting a pass slip through her hands, she grabbed the loose ball and angrily flipped it back to where she thought the official was standing. The ball smacked a Peruvian player in the face and floored her. Hortencia. expressionless, looked down, extended a hand, shrugged and headed down the court. She would be involved in three violent collisions, each time springing up and going about the business of playing basketball. ''She's so exciting to watch,'' said Teresa Edwards, the explosive point guard on the United States team. Edwards, a 5-11 senior at Georgia, recalled trying to guard Hortencia in 1983. ''I didn't stop her - the entire team had to stop her,'' Edwards said. ''We designed a crazy defense for her -like three people playing zone, two people playing her. She's quick and she's always moving. And she's a tremendous shooter. She can shoot the daylights out of the ball.'' 120 Points in One Game Last month, in the Sao Paulo city championship, Hortencia scored 120 points in her team's 251-27 victory. A more realistic measure of her talent came last June in a game against Tennessee, the defending women's National Collegiate Athletic Association champion. Hortencia made 10 of 14 shots from the field and scored 34 points as Brazil routed the Lady Vols, 105-68. ''She's just so great without the ball, she really reminds me of Larry Bird,'' said Pat Summitt, the Tennessee head coach. ''It's what she does on offense without the ball that makes the difference.'' The meeting between Brazil and the United States here Saturday will be a much stiffer test and one of the classic matches of the Pan Am games. Wilt Chamberlain was born on August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known as "Wilt the Stilt" for his 7'1" frame, Chamberlain was a Harlem Globetrotter before joining the Philadelphia Warriors. He achieved an average of 30.1 points per game over his career and holds several records, including for most points scored in one season (4,029) in March 2, 1962 he scored in a single game (100). Chamberlain was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. He died in Bel-Air, California, in 1999. -

Sorocaba is a city of 100,000, located in the interior of the Southeast region. But Hortencia has put it on the map. According to Brazilian journalists covering the tournament, she earns the equivalent of $40,000 a year, which is roughly 100 times the average annual wage.
Hortencia is 27 years old. She is the youngest of seven children. She started playing at age 13 and had to develop on her own since none of her siblings ever competed in the sport.
Hortencia works as a recreation leader and helps support her parents, who are retired. She practices five hours a day.
"My life is basketball," she said through an interpreter.
She and Oscar Schmidt of the unbeaten Brazilian men's team have helped keep basketball alive in a country where the popularity of the sport is slipping. Volleyball is taking over, particularly in the bigger cities. But Hortencia could become as big a story as the Brazilian men's volleyball team if her team wins a gold medal here.
Hortencia is a pure shooting guard with range that routinely extends beyond the international 20-feet, 6-inch three-point line.
"She makes points naturally," Brazilian coach Maria Helena Cardoso said.
"I hate it when people think I have to score points," Hortencia said. ''I'm not preoccupied with that."
There are some, like Edwards, who would disagree. Edwards stopped just short of calling Hortencia a gunner.

Hortência fala rápido, se mexe rápido. Apesar da aparência da dirigente lembrar pouco a jogadora de rabo de cavalo com fios soltos no rosto, o jeito simpático e o gosto por prosear continuam intactos.
Ela fala de Vanderlei Cordeiro, Fidel Castro, Olimpíadas, Mundial, mas refletindo sobre esporte e competição era impossível não pensar sobre Paula. E quando Hortência acha a deixa, a fala vem com uma intensidade, que só quem já teve uma grande adversária que virou parceira pode falar. É quase como um espelho, uma referência para medir a própria habilidade, para se entender.
Lembro de ter lido há muito tempo uma crônica sobre a Hortência, feita pelo Armando Nogueira e em um certo trecho, ele usava a frase “um olho na bola, outro na Paula”. Nunca me esqueci desta bela frase. Pelo jeito, Hortência também não.

Like other famous Brazilian athletes -- Pele in soccer, Oscar in basketball -- both are known by one name: Hortencia and Magic Paula, something like Magic and Michael both trying to lead a United States men's basketball team.
Hortência Maria de Fátima Marcari born September 23, 1959 INDIANAPOLIS,
Except for a blue ribbon tied just under the right knee, there is nothing about her appearance that suggests athletic majesty. She is not that tall, a stringy 5 feet 8 inches, her hands are not exceptionally large and her physique isn't particularly imposing.
In fact, most people would look at her and never guess she is a national sports heroine.
Bring up basketball, however, or tell her that the United States is favored to win the women's competition at the Pan American Games, and it turns around. The eyes narrow, the face tightens, the smile disappears.
For the last 11 years, Hortencia Marcari has delighted audiences and punctured defenses with pinpoint shooting and acrobatic drives to the basket. But for all of the manuevers, the thing that makes Hortencia - like many Brazilian athletes, she uses only a single name - such a ferocious competitor is her approach to the game. She has adopted what United States players refer to as a ''playground head'' - aggression as well as flair. 'I Love the Challenge'
''The thing I love most about basketball is the competition,'' she said. As she talks her open hand becomes a fist. She leans forward and makes her point with animated body movements, as if she were moving through a series of picks for an open jump shot. ''I love the challenge,'' she said. ''The individual against the individual.''
Against Peru in Brazil's opening-round game today, the 27-year-old guard, playing on a sore left ankle, scored 37 points as Brazil won, 117-48.
Hortencia seized control of the game in the opening minutes. Disgusted after letting a pass slip through her hands, she grabbed the loose ball and angrily flipped it back to where she thought the official was standing. The ball smacked a Peruvian player in the face and floored her. Hortencia. expressionless, looked down, extended a hand, shrugged and headed down the court. She would be involved in three violent collisions, each time springing up and going about the business of playing basketball.
''She's so exciting to watch,'' said Teresa Edwards, the explosive point guard on the United States team. Edwards, a 5-11 senior at Georgia, recalled trying to guard Hortencia in 1983.
''I didn't stop her - the entire team had to stop her,'' Edwards said. ''We designed a crazy defense for her -like three people playing zone, two people playing her. She's quick and she's always moving. And she's a tremendous shooter. She can shoot the daylights out of the ball.'' 120 Points in One Game Last month, in the Sao Paulo city championship, Hortencia scored 120 points in her team's 251-27 victory.
A more realistic measure of her talent came last June in a game against Tennessee, the defending women's National Collegiate Athletic Association champion. Hortencia made 10 of 14 shots from the field and scored 34 points as Brazil routed the Lady Vols, 105-68.
''She's just so great without the ball, she really reminds me of Larry Bird,'' said Pat Summitt, the Tennessee head coach. ''It's what she does on offense without the ball that makes the difference.''
The meeting between Brazil and the United States here Saturday will be a much stiffer test and one of the classic matches of the Pan Am games.
Wilt Chamberlain was born on August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known as "Wilt the Stilt" for his 7'1" frame, Chamberlain was a Harlem Globetrotter before joining the Philadelphia Warriors. He achieved an average of 30.1 points per game over his career and holds several records, including for most points scored in one season (4,029) in March 2, 1962 he scored in a single game (100). Chamberlain was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. He died in Bel-Air, California, in 1999.

Like other famous Brazilian athletes -- Pele in soccer, Oscar in basketball -- both are known by one name: Hortencia and Magic Paula, something like Magic and Michael both trying to lead a United States men's basketball team.
Hortência Maria de Fátima Marcari born September 23, 1959 INDIANAPOLIS,
Except for a blue ribbon tied just under the right knee, there is nothing about her appearance that suggests athletic majesty. She is not that tall, a stringy 5 feet 8 inches, her hands are not exceptionally large and her physique isn't particularly imposing.
In fact, most people would look at her and never guess she is a national sports heroine.
Bring up basketball, however, or tell her that the United States is favored to win the women's competition at the Pan American Games, and it turns around. The eyes narrow, the face tightens, the smile disappears.
For the last 11 years, Hortencia Marcari has delighted audiences and punctured defenses with pinpoint shooting and acrobatic drives to the basket. But for all of the manuevers, the thing that makes Hortencia - like many Brazilian athletes, she uses only a single name - such a ferocious competitor is her approach to the game. She has adopted what United States players refer to as a ''playground head'' - aggression as well as flair. 'I Love the Challenge'
''The thing I love most about basketball is the competition,'' she said. As she talks her open hand becomes a fist. She leans forward and makes her point with animated body movements, as if she were moving through a series of picks for an open jump shot. ''I love the challenge,'' she said. ''The individual against the individual.''
Against Peru in Brazil's opening-round game today, the 27-year-old guard, playing on a sore left ankle, scored 37 points as Brazil won, 117-48.
Hortencia seized control of the game in the opening minutes. Disgusted after letting a pass slip through her hands, she grabbed the loose ball and angrily flipped it back to where she thought the official was standing. The ball smacked a Peruvian player in the face and floored her. Hortencia. expressionless, looked down, extended a hand, shrugged and headed down the court. She would be involved in three violent collisions, each time springing up and going about the business of playing basketball.
''She's so exciting to watch,'' said Teresa Edwards, the explosive point guard on the United States team. Edwards, a 5-11 senior at Georgia, recalled trying to guard Hortencia in 1983.
''I didn't stop her - the entire team had to stop her,'' Edwards said. ''We designed a crazy defense for her -like three people playing zone, two people playing her. She's quick and she's always moving. And she's a tremendous shooter. She can shoot the daylights out of the ball.'' 120 Points in One Game Last month, in the Sao Paulo city championship, Hortencia scored 120 points in her team's 251-27 victory.
A more realistic measure of her talent came last June in a game against Tennessee, the defending women's National Collegiate Athletic Association champion. Hortencia made 10 of 14 shots from the field and scored 34 points as Brazil routed the Lady Vols, 105-68.
''She's just so great without the ball, she really reminds me of Larry Bird,'' said Pat Summitt, the Tennessee head coach. ''It's what she does on offense without the ball that makes the difference.''
The meeting between Brazil and the United States here Saturday will be a much stiffer test and one of the classic matches of the Pan Am games.
Wilt Chamberlain was born on August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known as "Wilt the Stilt" for his 7'1" frame, Chamberlain was a Harlem Globetrotter before joining the Philadelphia Warriors. He achieved an average of 30.1 points per game over his career and holds several records, including for most points scored in one season (4,029) in March 2, 1962 he scored in a single game (100). Chamberlain was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. He died in Bel-Air, California, in 1999.

She might not be as well known as that country's legendary soccer star, Pele. But Hortencia Marcara, the explosive 5-8 guard on the Brazilian basketball team, is generally regarded as the best women's player in South America, and possibly the best in the Pan American Games.
"She basically goes by one name," U.S. coach Jody Conradt said. "That gives you a clue as to how good she is. I can only think of Pele, Reggie and Hortencia."
Hortencia established herself as a world presence at the 1983 Pan Am when she dropped 48 points on the U.S. in Caracas, Venezuela. She tortured a touring University of Tennessee team in June, scoring 43 points during a 100-82 victory over the defending NCAA champions.
"She's the best shooter I've ever seen," Conradt said after watching Marcari shoot 16-for-22 and score 37 points during a 69-point route of hapless Peru. "She's the most exciting player in the world..
Hortencia already has destroyed a lot of teams in her native country, where the talent pool is limited. She recently scored an eye-opening 124 points during a 252-31 victory in a tournament held at Sao Paulo State.
Hortencia plays for Minercal, a club team sponsored by a lime-producing factory in her hometown of Sorocaba.
Sorocaba is a city of 100,000, located in the interior of the Southeast region. But Hortencia has put it on the map. According to Brazilian journalists covering the tournament, she earns the equivalent of $40,000 a year, which is roughly 100 times the average annual wage.
Hortencia is 27 years old. She is the youngest of seven children. She started playing at age 13 and had to develop on her own since none of her siblings ever competed in the sport.
Hortencia works as a recreation leader and helps support her parents, who are retired. She practices five hours a day.
"My life is basketball," she said through an interpreter.
She and Oscar Schmidt of the unbeaten Brazilian men's team have helped keep basketball alive in a country where the popularity of the sport is slipping. Volleyball is taking over, particularly in the bigger cities. But Hortencia could become as big a story as the Brazilian men's volleyball team if her team wins a gold medal here.
Hortencia is a pure shooting guard with range that routinely extends beyond the international 20-feet, 6-inch three-point line.
"She makes points naturally," Brazilian coach Maria Helena Cardoso said.
"I hate it when people think I have to score points," Hortencia said. ''I'm not preoccupied with that."
There are some, like Edwards, who would disagree. Edwards stopped just short of calling Hortencia a gunner
"If I was on their team and could shoot full-time and never worry about anybody else's feelings, that would be great. I don't fear Brazil. I fear Hortencia."

She might not be as well known as that country's legendary soccer star, Pele. But Hortencia Marcara, the explosive 5-8 guard on the Brazilian basketball team, is generally regarded as the best women's player in South America, and possibly the best in the Pan American Games.
"She basically goes by one name," U.S. coach Jody Conradt said. "That gives you a clue as to how good she is. I can only think of Pele, Reggie and Hortencia."
Hortencia established herself as a world presence at the 1983 Pan Am when she dropped 48 points on the U.S. in Caracas, Venezuela. She tortured a touring University of Tennessee team in June, scoring 43 points during a 100-82 victory over the defending NCAA champions.
"She's the best shooter I've ever seen," Conradt said after watching Marcari shoot 16-for-22 and score 37 points during a 69-point route of hapless Peru. "She's the most exciting player in the world..
Hortencia already has destroyed a lot of teams in her native country, where the talent pool is limited. She recently scored an eye-opening 124 points during a 252-31 victory in a tournament held at Sao Paulo State.
Hortencia plays for Minercal, a club team sponsored by a lime-producing factory in her hometown of Sorocaba.
Sorocaba is a city of 100,000, located in the interior of the Southeast region. But Hortencia has put it on the map. According to Brazilian journalists covering the tournament, she earns the equivalent of $40,000 a year, which is roughly 100 times the average annual wage.
Hortencia is 27 years old. She is the youngest of seven children. She started playing at age 13 and had to develop on her own since none of her siblings ever competed in the sport.
Hortencia works as a recreation leader and helps support her parents, who are retired. She practices five hours a day.
"My life is basketball," she said through an interpreter.
She and Oscar Schmidt of the unbeaten Brazilian men's team have helped keep basketball alive in a country where the popularity of the sport is slipping. Volleyball is taking over, particularly in the bigger cities. But Hortencia could become as big a story as the Brazilian men's volleyball team if her team wins a gold medal here.
Hortencia is a pure shooting guard with range that routinely extends beyond the international 20-feet, 6-inch three-point line.
"She makes points naturally," Brazilian coach Maria Helena Cardoso said.
"I hate it when people think I have to score points," Hortencia said. ''I'm not preoccupied with that."
There are some, like Edwards, who would disagree. Edwards stopped just short of calling Hortencia a gunner
"If I was on their team and could shoot full-time and never worry about anybody else's feelings, that would be great. I don't fear Brazil. I fear Hortencia."
Hortencia will try to reload here, provided her ankles hold up. She sprained both of them earlier this week.
