Deception Island is an island in South Shetland off the Antarctic Peninsula, which has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which caused serious damage to the local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station; it is now a tourist destination and scientific outpost, with research bases being run by Argentina and Spain. Various countries have previously asserted sovereignty, but it is now administered under the Antarctic Treaty System.
The island, located at 62°58′37″S 60°39′00″W / 62.97694°S 60.65°W / -62.97694; -60.65, is approximately circular with a diameter of about 12 km (7.5 mi). A peak on the east side of the island, Mount Pond, has an elevation of 542 m (1,778 ft), and over half the island is covered by glaciers. The centre of the island is a caldera formed in a huge (VEI-6) eruption which has been flooded by the sea to form a large bay, now called Port Foster, about 9 km (5.6 mi) long and 6 km (3.7 mi) wide. The bay has a narrow entrance, just 230 m (755 ft) wide, called Neptunes Bellows. Adding to the hazard is Ravn Rock, which lies 2.5 m (8.2 ft) below the water in the middle of the channel. Just inside Neptunes Bellows lies the cove Whalers Bay, which is bordered by a large black-sand beach.
Laura Barrett is a Canadian indie pop singer-songwriter, best known for incorporating the kalimba into her music. In addition to her solo work, Barrett has also performed as a member of The Hidden Cameras, Henri Fabergé and the Adorables, Woodhands and Sheezer.
A classically-trained pianist, Barrett studied English literature and linguistics at the University of Toronto, and took up the kalimba as a hobby after buying one on eBay. Her first public performance was a cover of "Smells Like Nirvana" at a "Weird Al" Yankovic tribute concert. She subsequently released two EPs, and was the musical director for a New York City production of Maggie MacDonald's play The Rat King.
Barrett released her first full-length album, Victory Garden, in 2008 on Paper Bag Records. In December 2008 Laura Barrett was the recipient of a CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award for "Sexiest Musician".
In 2009 Laura Barrett took part in an interactive documentary series called City Sonic. The series, which featured 20 Toronto artists, had her talk about her first concert. The first rock concert she attended was, at the age of 12, at the Art Gallery of Ontario for the Rheostatics experimental set Music Inspired by the Group of Seven.
In moments of madness
Staring at translucent monuments
Indwelling this place for aeons
With their eternalness appearing intangible
The icy black waves enclosing ourselves
Be breasted by lead heavy hearts
Vigor and force in flesh by sunlight
Shall do good in conquering trepidation
Still the brazen mist makes morals occult
Abortive try to disperse the septum of haze
Chilling clearance heisting hope
Nothing to be found abaft the stars
Obscure guises mocking men
Idiosyncratic perceptional torment
