Cleaning out an Entire Claw Machine Skill Crane
I finally decided to do it... I cleaned out an entire claw machine in an arcade. The skill crane was $.50 per play and I spent around $17.50 total, averaging a win every 1 out of 3 or 4 plays. Journey to the Claw Machine - Cleaned out by Matt Magnone

Step 1: Watch before trying
Watch another player attempt to control the crane to judge the power and movement of the claw and which prizes are easiest to grab.
Tip
Save your money for another day if it appears the prizes are packed in tightly, it's almost impossible to win.
Step 2: Take your time
Take your time in deciding which prize to attempt before putting your money in the machine to avoid panicking as the clock ticks down.
Step 3: Budget your money
Set up a budget to avoid pumping in too much cash for a prize that may not be worth it.
Step 4: Aim for neck or chest
Aim for the neck or chest of the stuffed animal to try to get the claw all the around the prize and don't waste time with legs or arms.
Tip
Round prizes such as balls must be hit dead center or the claw will cause them to pop out.
Step 5: Time the payouts
Time the payouts as most machines have a microchip that will give out a prize after a certain number of turns so your patience will be rewarded.

Isenseven - "Don't Panic!" TEASER
Don't Panic! Yes, you should not panic. Why panic? Things are good, aren't they? Speaking of "things"...."Don't Panic!" is also the name for IsenSevens 2010 movie.
We travelled to powdery Euro resorts, snowed-in German and Scandinavian cities, slushy California parks, Russian ghettos and all kinds of other fun places.....except Vegas. No snow there this year.
With a bunch of new riders, familiar faces and new additions to the production team, we regrouped to form a snowboard-movie-super-alliance which even the United Nations couldn't shake a stick at.
Equipped with fancy schmancy cameras and cool cranes/jibs/dollys/cable cams/filming monkeys we set out to make yet another fine movie filled with the typical fun riding, banger bangers, people doing stupid things, rails, pow, park, bright and flashy colors and little snow caves.
This years team consists of the usual suspects Fredrik Evensen, Christophe Schmidt, Ludwig Lejkner, Fips & Tobi Strauss, Alex Tank, Tom Klocker, Marco Smolla and the new additions of the swiss connection Colin Frei & David Bertschinger Karg, Austro kicker machine Benny Wetscher, Norwegian viking Sindre Iversen, Italian supermodel Simon Gruber, Scotlands real Braveheart Gary Greenshields and Norwegian super-kid Gjermund Bråten. So be sure to bring your barf bags cause there's going to be some spinning that will make you dizzy!
The movie will be released mid September and the whole gang can't wait to show you their new baby.
ISENSEVEN presents "DON'T PANIC!". A film by ALEX SCHILLER, TOM ELLIOTT and VINCENT URBAN.

Kessler Crane CineSlider, Oracle, ElektraDRIVE Motion Control Timelapse System
I am testing the Kessler motion control timelapse kit.
It comes in three major parts:
1. CineSlider portable dolly
2. Oracle Controller
3. ElektraDRIVE motor
You will need the battery and I recommend the out-riggers, measure tape and a Bogen magic arm for DSLR use.
No tools are required to turn a manual CineSlider into an electronic motor driven timelapse machine.
I am very impressed with the portability, build quality, and accuracy of this system. It has filled a void in my production tool kit.

k where do i begin?!!
this summer has been incredibly busy, from vancouver, to miami, to sydney, to hawaii, to niagara falls (haha k this is only a 200km drive) shooting weddings, teaching workshops, shooting corporate promos + commercials and of course shooting more weddings.
things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.
i REALALLLLLLYY love you guys!!! thank you for having me document your wedding.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.
- as both konrad and I taught in sydney australia 2 weeks ago and did a

Precut - Modern Japanese Timber Construction
Industrially precut timber framing has become the predominant house construction method throughout Japan. In our first short documentary, we explain the process from factory floor to building site. Like so much of its traditional culture, Japan has developed a highly efficient technological adaptation of an age-old building technique.
BAKOKO is a international design practice based in Tokyo, Japan, founded by architects Alastair Townsend and Kayoko Ohtsuki.
http://www.bakoko.jp
http://twitter.com/BAKOKO
Transcript:
Japan's traditional architecture is famed for its intricately carved joinery.
Forgoing nails and screws, master builders used interlocking joints to construct robust wooden buildings that have remained intact for centuries despite frequent earthquakes.
Like other aspects of its culture, Japan has successfully applied technology to preserve and modernize this traditional building method.
The precut method uses robotic machinery to cut each interlocking joint in seconds.
Throughout the 1990's robotically manufacturing timber frame houses skyrocketed. Today it is the standard house construction throughout the country.
We are currently building a beach house for a private client in Chiba Prefecture, on the Pacific coast southeast of Tokyo.
Our blueprints were re-drawn by the precut timber supplier into a set of schematics.
The symbols at the junction of each post and beam denote what type of joint will be cut to fit them together.
To better understand the process, we decided to tour the factory while the timber for the home's structure was being cut.
In a former Hitachi factory about 30 kilometers from the site, five workers produce the timber structure for 800 - 1,000 homes each year (with the capacity to handle up to 4,000).
Purpose-built machinery, manufactured by the Heian Corporation, is completely automated, taking square-cut lumber and processing it into stack of pre-jointed and numbered posts and beams.
Each job is input into the machinery from specialized software. The operators' only task is feeding in the appropriate lumber for each job listed in the computer's queue.
There are separate machines for cutting the posts and beams.
First, the dimension of each timber is checked and cut to length by a large radial saw.
From there, it is whisked down a conveyor belt to a large wheel-like armature with five centrifugally-arranged drill attachments.
The spinning wheel allows the machine to mill a tenon (the protruding part of the joint) onto both ends of each post and beam.
A separate part of the machine mills the mortises (or sockets) at exact locations along length of each member.
Along the way, each piece is marked with a unique number so that it can be quickly identified and assembled in the correct place when it arrives on site.
Finally, the wood is stacked, wrapped, and ready for delivery.
It took only a day to erect the precut timber frame of the beach house.
Two skilled carpenters (or daikusan) are working on the job. But to erect the frame everyone from the electrician to the interior decorator is called upon to help.
The pre-numbered members are hoisted by crane and fitted together with the help of a large wooden mallet.
The workers obviously enjoy the process which is akin to piecing together a large wooden puzzle.
The joints are reinforced with steel bolts, providing an additional factor of safety in the event of a large earthquake.
Only some parts of the angled wooden truss reinforcing the southern facade could not be cut by the precut machinery. These had to be hand-cut by the daiku-san.
Despite a long-term recession and a shrinking population, Japan continues to rapidly build new homes.
But the workforce of skilled carpenters (or daiku-san) is also aging. It's unlikely homebuilding in Japan could continue without relying on automation.
With precut, the time and cost of cutting and shaping timber joints on-site, according to long-held building tradition, is greatly reduced.
Using automation, Japanese builders – renowned for their skill and obsessive attention to detail - can efficiently achieve millimeter accuracy quickly whilst eliminating nearly all on-site waste.

Hacking a crane game / claw machine for free credits
Full article here:
http://karceh.blogspot.com/2012/11/tricking-skill-testers-and-other.html
Using a piezoelectric igniter (also called a shocker or a zapper by some), from an electric lighter to get free credits on a crane game! This also works with many other coin payment systems, including children's rides and even some vending machines. The trick is to find the right place to zap.
As anyone who has used one of these will know, claw games are entirely a rip off. The claw strength is set randomly each game, and with this machine there's approximately a 2% chance of it being strong enough to actually lift the prize. That means with this machine you would need to spend $40 to stand a good chance at winning. So it's not a "skill tester" because anyone can align the claw correctly, but rather it's a blatant gamble.
This is a demonstration of poor electrical shielding, and while many machines are immune to this, there's still many more in existence that are not.
