On the Fly: Yann Martel
Yann Martel was born in Salamanca, Spain when his father was posted there as a diplomat for the Canadian government. He grew up in Costa Rica, France, Mexico, and Canada. As an adult, Martel has spent time in Iran, Turkey and India. After studying philosophy at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, he spent 13 months in India visiting temples, churches, mosques and zoos, and spent two years reading religious texts and castaway stories. In 2001, he published Life of Pi, which was awarded the Man Booker Prize in 2002.
From 2007 to 2011, Martel worked on a project entitled "What is Stephen Harper Reading?", where he sent the Prime Minister of Canada one book every two weeks that portrays 'stillness' with an accompanying explanatory note. He posted his letters, book selections and responses received to a website devoted to the project. A book-length account of the project was published in the fall of 2009. Martel ended the project in February 2011, after sending Harper a total of 100 books.
Martel's latest novel is "Beatrice and Virgil", an allegorical novel whose protagonist, Henry, receives a letter from an elderly taxidermist that poses a puzzle that he cannot resist. As he is pulled further into the world of this strange and calculating man, Henry becomes increasingly involved with the lives of a donkey and a howler monkey—named Beatrice and Virgil—and the epic journey they undertake together. With all the spirit and originality that made Life of Pi so beloved, this brilliant new novel takes the reader on a haunting odyssey. On the way Martel asks profound questions about life and art, truth and deception, responsibility and complicity.

While writing his latest bestseller, Beatrice & Virgil, Booker prize-winning author Yann Martel had an interesting side project: every two weeks he would send Stephen Harper a letter with a book recommendation. Why is getting our prime minister exposed to literature so important to Martel?

Ang Lee, Suraj Sharma, Yann Martel Interviews -- LIFE OF PI -- International Featurette
In 2011, I had the privilege of going to the set of LIFE OF PI in Taiwan to witness the artistry of Oscar winning filmmaker Ang Lee in person. He was one of the first world cinema icons I had the privilege to work with as a young publicist in the 1990s on a film titled "Eat Drink Man Woman."
And, he remembered.
I was fortunate to sit down with Lee several times to discuss his work on LIFE OF PI. Each conversation was personal and humbling, listening to a man who truly believes in the power of cinema.
"I never really wanted to grow up. I'm like Peter Pan. I want to stay in the movie, not deal with reality. Making movies for so many years, paradise or not, I do value the value of imagination"
Here's a look into what gave LIFE OF PI so much value to the artistic lives of Lee, author Yann Martel and rising star Suraj Sharma in this featurettes produced by Blue Collar Productions for 20th Century Fox International, now playing on The MediaJor Channel. (Produced/written/interviews: Jorge Carreon; editor: Derek Degenhardt.)
