Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy (Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel; born 25 December 1936) is the youngest granddaughter of King George V of the United Kingdom and Mary of Teck. She is the widow of Sir Angus Ogilvy. Prior to her marriage she was known as ''Princess Alexandra of Kent'', being the first princess to use the territorial designation ''of Kent'' since Queen Victoria, who was, prior to her accession, known as Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent.

Princess Alexandra carries out royal duties on behalf of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth II. As of January 2011 she is 37th in the line of succession to the thrones of 16 states; at the time of her birth in 1936, she was sixth in line to the thrones of seven countries.

Early life

Princess Alexandra was born on 25 December 1936 at 3 Belgrave Square, London. Her father was The Prince George, Duke of Kent, the fourth son of George V and Queen Mary. Her mother was Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, a daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia. As a male-line granddaughter of the British monarch, she was styled as a British princess with the prefix ''Her Royal Highness''. At the time of her birth, she was sixth in the line of succession to the British throne. The Princess was baptised in the Private Chapel of Buckingham Palace, on 9 February 1937, and her godparents were: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (her paternal uncle and aunt); the Queen of Norway (her grandaunt); Princess Nicholas of Greece and Denmark (her maternal grandmother); Princess Olga of Yugoslavia (her paternal aunt); the Princess Beatrice (her paternal great-grandaunt); the Earl of Athlone (her paternal granduncle); and Count Karl Theodor of Törring-Jettenbach (her maternal uncle by marriage). Of her godparents, only the King and Queen and Lord Athlone were present. She was named after her great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra, her maternal grandmother, Princess Nicholas of Greece and Denmark, and both of her maternal aunts, Countess Karl Theodor of Törring-Jettenbach and Princess Paul of Yugoslavia. She received the name Christabel because she was born on Christmas Day like her aunt by marriage Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

Princess Alexandra spent most of her childhood at her family's country house, Coppins, in Buckinghamshire. She lived with her grandmother Queen Mary, the widow of George V, during World War II at Badminton. Her father was killed in an aeroplane crash near Caithness, Scotland on 25 August 1942 while serving in the Royal Air Force.

She served as bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousins, the then-Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh, on 20 November 1947. The Queen is Princess Alexandra's paternal first cousin; The Duke of Edinburgh is Princess Alexandra's maternal first cousin once removed. (The Duke and Princess Marina were first cousins.) Princess Alexandra has the distinction of being the first British princess to have attended an ordinary school, Heathfield School near Ascot. She is a Christian and was led to Jesus Christ by the evangelist Luis Palau.

Marriage

On 24 April 1963, she married the Hon. Angus James Bruce Ogilvy (1928–2004), the second son of the 12th Earl of Airlie and Lady Alexandra Coke, at Westminster Abbey. The wedding ceremony was attended by all the members of the Royal Family and was broadcast worldwide on television, watched by an estimated 200 million people.

Ogilvy declined the Queen's offer of an Earldom upon marriage. This meant that, when they had children, they would carry no title at all.

Angus Ogilvy remained in line to the Earldom of Airlie until his death. He received a Knighthood in 1988, and was appointed to the Privy Council in 1997. Princess Alexandra and Sir Angus have two children, James and Marina, and four grandchildren, none of whom carries out Royal duties:

Royal duties

Since the late 1950s, Princess Alexandra has carried out an extensive programme of royal engagements in support of the Queen, both in the United Kingdom and overseas.

Princess Alexandra was age 15 years old when her cousin ascended to the throne. It has been customary for eldest sons to carry out official duties which are included in the Court Circular. Princess Alexandra was asked by the Queen to undertake such duties because of a lack of female members of the family. The only other princesses by birth were the Queen's sister Margaret, and the Queen's young daughter, Princess Anne. In 1959, she carried out an extensive tour of Australia, and attended the Queensland Centenary Celebrations. She returned to the country in 1967 for a private holiday, but also carried out engagements in Canberra and Melbourne. The Princess represented the Queen when Nigeria gained its independence from the United Kingdom on 1 October 1960, and later opened the first Parliament on 3 October. Later overseas tours included visits to Canada, Italy, Norway, Thailand, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

Princess Alexandra served as Chancellor of Lancaster University since its foundation in 1964, a post she relinquished in 2005 (when she also accepted an honorary degree in Music). She is also an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the Royal College of Physicians. She is also the President of Alexandra Rose Day, which was founded in honour of her great-grandmother, Alexandra of Denmark. She has recently given up the patronage of The Royal School, Hampstead, which was founded in 1855. The new Patron of the School is The Duchess of Cornwall.

Princess Alexandra receives £225,000 per year from the Civil List to cover the cost of official expenses; although like the other members of the Royal Family (except the Duke of Edinburgh) the Queen repays this amount to the Treasury. Alexandra lives at Thatched House Lodge in Richmond, London a Crown property purchased on a 150-year lease from the Crown Estate Commissioners by Sir Angus Ogilvy after their wedding in 1963.

It was reported in the London Evening Standard on 11 January 2006, that a widow living alone in the seven-bedroom house was too full of memories and that she wanted to sell her lease. However, she currently has not changed her mind. She also has use of a grace-and-favour apartment at St James's Palace in London. Her husband supported Alexandra in Royal duties at times, although he also had an independent career.

She is the patron of the Blackie Foundation Trust, a charity dedicated to the promotion of research and education in homeopathy. She is also a patron of the English National Opera, the London Philharmonic Choir, the not-for-profit housing association Anchor, the charity Independent Age, St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham, England, the Nature in Art Trust and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), the oldest drama school in the English speaking world and President of WWF-UK.

Family troubles

Although described as "one of the most popular members of the royal family", Princess Alexandra and her family have come under media scrutiny at various points in her life. Her husband was a director at a mining company, Lonrho, when it was involved in a scandal over the breaking of trade sanctions against British-held Rhodesia. The Prime Minister at the time, Edward Heath, criticised the company, and Ogilvy resigned his directorships.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex (Edward Antony Richard Louis; born 10 March 1964) is the third son and fourth and youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the time of his birth, he was third in the line of succession to the thrones of ten independent Sovereign States known as the Commonwealth realms; however, after the births of two children each to his two elder brothers, and an evolution of the Commonwealth, Prince Edward is now seventh in line to the thrones of 16 countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Consequently, he is also seventh in line to the positions of Head of the Commonwealth (figurehead of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations) and Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

Early life and education

Edward was born at Buckingham Palace on 10 March 1964, the fourth child and third son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and fifth grandchild of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Baptised on 2 May 1964 in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle by the then Dean of Windsor, Robert Woods; the Prince's godparents were: Prince Richard of Gloucester (his cousin); the Duchess of Kent (his cousin by marriage, for whom Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent stood proxy); Princess George William of Hanover (his paternal aunt); the Prince of Hesse and by Rhine (his cousin); and the Earl of Snowdon (his maternal uncle). As a child of the Sovereign, Edward was styled from birth as ''His Royal Highness'' and was entitled ''The Prince Edward''.

As with his older siblings, a governess was appointed to look after the Prince and was responsible for his early education at Buckingham Palace. At the age of seven, Edward was then sent to Gibbs School before attending, in September 1972, Heatherdown Preparatory School, near Ascot. He then, as his father and elder brother had done before him, moved to Gordonstoun, in northern Scotland, and was appointed Head Boy in his last term. Edward obtained a C-grade and two D-grades at A-level, and after his schooling spent a gap year abroad, working as a house tutor and junior master for two terms in September 1982 at the Wanganui Collegiate School in New Zealand.

Upon his return to Britain, Edward matriculated at Jesus College, Cambridge, to read history. His admission to Cambridge caused some controversy at the time, as his A-level grades were far below the standard normally required, "straight As", for entry to the university. Edward graduated in 1986 with lower second class honours, and, as is customary at Cambridge, proceeded Master of Arts (Cantab) in 1991, making Edward the fourth of only five members of the Royal Family in history to have obtained a university degree.

Career

On leaving university, Prince Edward joined the Royal Marines to train as an officer cadet; however, he resigned his commission in January 1987, before completing training. Edward thereafter became more involved in theatre, an activity he had enjoyed at school and university. In the late 1980s, he worked for two theatrical production companies, including Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Theatre Company, where he was part of plays such as ''The Phantom of the Opera'', ''Starlight Express'', and ''Cats''. While there he commissioned the 1986 musical ''Cricket'' from Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, for his mother's 60th birthday celebration. At the Really Useful Company, Edward met actress Ruthie Henshall, whom he dated for two years.

Edward's first foray into television production was the programme ''It's a Royal Knockout'', in June 1987, in which teams sponsored by himself and other members of the Royal Family competed for charity. The media attacked the programme; it was reported that the Queen had not approved of the event and that her courtiers had advised against it.

In 1993, Edward formed Ardent Productions, under the name of Edward Windsor from 1995 and later Edward Wessex. Ardent was involved in the production of a number of documentaries and dramas, but Edward was accused in the media of using his royal connections for financial gain, although his activities were seemingly more kindly received in the United States. A documentary on his great uncle, Edward VIII (later HRH The Duke of Windsor) in 1996 sold well around the globe. The company reported losses for every year of its existence except one, and only then because Edward did not draw a salary. An Ardent two-man film crew invaded the privacy of his nephew Prince William in September 2001 while he was studying at the University of St Andrews against industry guidelines regarding the Royals' privacy. The Prince of Wales was reportedly angered by the incident. In March 2002, the Prince announced that he would step down as director of production and joint managing director of Ardent to concentrate on his public duties and to support the Queen during her Golden Jubilee year. Ardent Productions was voluntarily liquidated in June 2009 with assets of £40; Edward had maintained a connection to the company as a non-executive director. On 11 November 2010 Prince Edward attended Q3 Academy in Great Barr to formally open the £30 million building.

Marriage

The Prince's engagement to Sophie Rhys-Jones, then a public relations executive with her own firm, was announced on 6 January 1999.

The wedding itself took place on 19 June of the same year at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. This was a break from the weddings of Edward's older siblings, which were large, formal events at Westminster Abbey or St Paul's Cathedral. On his wedding day, the Queen conferred on Prince Edward the titles of Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn, again breaking with the tradition that the son of a sovereign is created a Duke. It was also announced at that time that the Earl of Wessex would be created Duke of Edinburgh when that dukedom, held by Edward's father since 1947, reverts to the Crown, which can only happen after both his parents have died (see here for details). It was also announced that any children of the Earl and Countess would be styled as the children of an Earl, rather than as ''Prince/ss'' and ''Royal Highness'' (as they would otherwise have been under the Letters Patent issued by King George V). Consequently, Edward's two children are known as Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. The family resides at Bagshot Park in Surrey.

Official duties

The Earl of Wessex, along with his wife, carries out a full schedule of royal duties on behalf of the Queen, receiving Civil List monies from the Queen of £141,000 per annum for their work in the United Kingdom, and various amounts from the governments of the other realms for his work there.

The Earl has taken on many roles from his father, the Duke of Edinburgh, who is reducing some commitments owing to his advancing age. The Earl replaced him as President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (since 2006 its Vice-Patron) and opened the 1990 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand and the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia. He has also taken over the Duke's role in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, attending Gold Award ceremonies around the world.

Killa Kela (real name Lee Potter born in 1979) is an English beatboxer from West Sussex.

Biography

Kela began beatboxing in his teens with the 360 Physicals crew. He was discovered by DJ Vadim when he sent a tape of his beatboxing to Vadim's now defunct label Jazz Fudge. His first release was a mixtape with Mr Thing called "Antistatic Mouthwash".

Since then, Kela has been a member of the Isolationists, Rock Steady Crew and The Scratch Perverts. He has also appeared on DJ Vadim's albums and tours as part of the Russian Percussion project, and appeared onstage with Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Super Furry Animals, Prince, De La Soul and Plan B. He is considered to be one of the best beatboxers in the world alongside Kenny Muhammad and Rahzel. Beatboxing acclaim- Kela is a regular feature on the panel of the Human beatboxing championships in the UK plus received the BeatboxBattle champion Hall Of Fame award in 2006, Germany.

Kela received the Stuff Magazine Award for "renegade of Style" 2006 in in Los Angeles, he also toured alongside Testicicles (Dev, Lightspeed Champion & GLC (Goldie Lookin Chain) whilst performing on festival dates with new friends Pharrel Williams & N*E*R*D. Plus a U.S tour alongside DJ Z-Trip in 2007. 2003 - 2008, Kela was a special guest at various N*E*R*D shows and festivals across Europe. inc. Seattle for the Sprite Liquid Mix festival and Oxygen festival, Dublin. In 2008 Kela also performed with Prince & Nikka Costa at the o2 arena.

His live act incorporates drum & bass, electro and hip-hop stylings, singing, MCing, very realistic vocal scratching, body movements and imitations of popular songs such as "Slave 4 U" by Britney Spears and "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega. He calls his technique "Multivocalism", a term coined by longtime artwork collaborator Mark Splinter in 2000. Kela's crew has performed hundreds of live shows all around the world and are known as "Spit Kingdom".

Kela released''"The Permanent Marker"'' in 2002. A beatbox-only album feat Fallacy, Harry Love, Normski and others. Off the back of the album, he went on countless tours inc shows with Mobb Deep, Redman, Busta Rhymes and others. He also was 2nd on the bill at the Earls Court Music festival with JayZ.

Killa Kela featured his sounds on the Basement Jaxx single "Oh My Gosh" (2004)

Kela released an Ep in Europe entitled "For Those Who've Joined us" featuring Stereo MCs, Artful Dodger, Dj Vadim and more.

The "Elocution" project (Sony BMG) came in 2005 & incorporated 'The Elysian Quartet' on strings, backing vocalists Rookwood and Trip, DJ Skeletrik and his producer Spider on keys and vocals. It also featured Sweetie Irie, James Rushent (Does It Offend You, Yeah?) Roots Manuva & Neneh Cherry, with writing from Karen Poole. His song Jawbreaker was put on the FIFA Street 2 Soundtrack and is to date, one of his strongest releases off The Elocution album.

He is also known for a UK advert for "Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles" and regular appearances on TV shows such as "Big Brother's Little Brother" , the Royal Variety Performance, Blue Peter, 4Music, Britain's Got Talent & four Absolut Vodka commercials in the U.S at this time.

Kela parted ways with SonyBMG in 2007.

Kela between albums created The single "Nightwatcher" (formerly Addiction) alongside Alan Braxe & Fallon. He also created the mix cd alongside his then crew Spitkingdom , entitled - "Days That Shook The World" produced by James Rushent (Does It Offend you? Yeah?) & Dj Skelectrik which received "Best Mix CD 2007 in Dj Magazine UK. Plus released the cd - "ONTOURVANDAMAGE", in 2008 produced by Dj Plus One (Scratch Perverts, JackBeats)

Spitkingdom were also the team behind the legendary Hip Hop London weekly SpitkingdomHQ @Herbal in Shoreditch between 2004 - 2007. which saw a wealth of artist perform, such as The Mixologists, Killa Kela, Skelectrik, Trip, Rookwood, Spider J , Dj Martello, and special guests including - Andy C, Whookid (50 cent), Goldie, Artful Dodger, Dynamite, Nicky BlackMarket Dj Cash Money, Kool Herc, Chase & Status, Scratch Perverts, Stanton Warriors and more.

In 2009 Kela created his debut album "Amplified!" alongside producers Andy Knowles (Frans ferdinand fame), Alan Braxe (Stardust fame, Paris), Martin Rushent (Human League), The Shoalin Punks, James Rushent (Prodigy, Does It Offend you? Yeah? and long standing friend), Stunt Double and featuring artists such as Dj Craze, Bashy of The Gorrillaz, Hadouken, Lateef The Truth Speaker & Spider J of Lee Scratch Perry. The album was a big leap from all previous albums and has seen him more as an artist in his own right outside of his beatbox achievements. contains "Built Like An Amplifier" which included remixes from Dave Spoon, Sway & Faith SFX. "Everyday" Produced by Alan Braxe with remixs from LifeLike, Jackwob & Franz Ferdinand. Plus an additional release of "Get A Rise" ft Hadouken, which was heavily featured on "Need For Speed" Hot Pursuit 2010 game (Soundtrack) Off the back of the Amplified! Debut, Killa Kela began touring the UK with Lethal Bizzle on the Go Hard Tour, Frankmusik on his 2009 Winter Tour and with Hadouken early 2010.

On 28 September Killa Kela appeared at the London School of Economics for their much anticipated freshers event, the event was widely considered Killa Kela's best and most inspiring performance of his entire career, however the performance received mixed reactions.

Killa Kela is to feature in the new Plan b movie Ill Manners in 2011, plus recently collaborated at the Party4Pakistan event in London.

Kela performed at the Glastonbury Main stage on the Wednesday opener to 83,000 people, Recently completed an 5 date tour of Australia, also 2 tours of Asia last year.

Personal life

In 2007 he finished an 11 month relationship with the UK actress Patsy Kensit (ex- wife of Liam Gallagher) which was the inspiration for his single "Reveal Your Inner Self" (2007, produced by James & Martin Rushent). The lyrics attack tabloid and celebrity magazine journalists for hiding behind their printed words and spreading lies. Since the breakup he has released further material on his website attacking his previous relationship Patsy Kensit and criticising himself for getting involved. It saw a heavy turn in his life which became the catalyst for future work.

Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (Alice Mary Victoria Augusta Pauline; née Princess Alice of Albany; 25 February 1883 – 3 January 1981) was a member of the British Royal Family. She was the longest-lived Princess of the Blood Royal of the British Royal Family and the last surviving grandchild of Queen Victoria. She also held the titles of Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duchess in Saxony from birth, as well as a Princess of Teck by marriage, until 1917 when she was commanded to relinquish them by the Letters Patent of George V. She was godmother to Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, who was the granddaughter of her first cousin, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.

Early life

Princess Alice was born 25 February 1883 at Windsor Castle. Her father was Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, the youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her mother was Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont. She had one brother, Prince Charles Edward, Duke of Albany (1884–1954) and later reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1900–1918). As the granddaughter of the Sovereign through the male line, she was a Princess of the United Kingdom and a Royal Highness. As the daughter of the Duke of Albany, she was, therefore, styled ''Her Royal Highness'' Princess Alice of Albany. She was baptised in the Private Chapel of Windsor Castle on 26 March 1883, and named Alice for her late paternal aunt. Her godparents were: Queen Victoria (her paternal grandmother); the German Empress (for whom Alice's paternal aunt Princess Beatrice stood proxy); William III, King of the Netherlands (for whom the Dutch Ambassador Count de Bylandt stood proxy); Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse (her namesake's widower, whose brother-in-law the Duke of Edinburgh represented him); the Princess of Waldeck-Pyrmont (her maternal grandmother); the Prince of Wales (her paternal uncle); the Crown Princess of Germany (her paternal aunt, whose sister-in-law the Princess of Wales represented her); Prince Wilhelm of Württemberg (her cousin, for whom his cousin the Duke of Teck stood proxy); the Hereditary Princess of Bentheim and Steinfurt (her maternal aunt, for whom her paternal aunt Princess Christian stood proxy); and the Duchess of Cambridge (an aunt of the Queen, whose daughter the Duchess of Teck represented her).

Marriage and issue

Princess Alice was one of the carriers of the gene for haemophilia which arose with Queen Victoria. Princess Alice inherited the gene from her father who himself was a sufferer.

1917

When the British Royal Family abandoned all Germanic titles by Letters Patent issued by King George V in June 1917, Prince Alexander of Teck adopted the surname ''Cambridge,'' became (briefly) Sir Alexander Cambridge, then the Earl of Athlone, relinquishing the title "Prince of Teck" in the Kingdom of Württemberg and the style ''Serene Highness.'' As such, the two surviving children lost their Württemberg princely titles. Princess Alice relinquished her titles of Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duchess of Saxony, whilst her brother Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who held a commission in the German Army, was stripped of his British titles. Alice remained, however, a Princess of Great Britain and Ireland and a Royal Highness in her own right, as granddaughter of Queen Victoria in the male line. From June 1917 until her death, she was styled ''Her Royal Highness'' Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone.

South Africa

The Earl was appointed Governor-General of the Union of South Africa and served from 1924-31: Princess Alice accompanied him and was the Vicereine during that period. Lord and Lady Athlone had a coastal beach house constructed at Muizenberg, which still stands today and is one of South Africa's national monuments. The Cape Town Suburb of Athlone was named in honour of the Governor-General and, together with the beach house, is also the only physical reminder of the Athlones' residence at the Cape.

World War II and Canada

On the sudden death of the vastly popular John Buchan in 1940 Canada found itself without a Governor General in time of war. Despite the longstanding intention of Canadian governments to indigenise the office and appoint Canadian nationals as governors general — Australia had long since done so with the appointment of Sir Isaac Isaacs as its governor general — wartime seemed an unpropitious time for constitutional tinkering; the Royal Family had garnered vast public support during the Royal Tour of 1939; as Queen Mary's brother and a former governor general of another of His Majesty's Dominions (as they were then styled), Lord Athlone seemed a satisfactory candidate notwithstanding considerations of talent, and Mackenzie King advised the King to appoint him.

Princess Alice accompanied her husband to Canada where he served as Governor General from 1940 to 1946. Upon taking up his post, The Earl immediately made himself active in the support of the war effort, travelling across the country and focusing much of his attention on the troops, either those training at military facilities or those injured and in hospital. Viewing his position as governor general as a link between Canadians and their monarch, Athlone also communicated in speeches that the King stood with them in their fight against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.

As vicereine of Canada, Princess Alice also supported the war effort by serving as Honorary Commandant of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service, Honorary Air Commandant of the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women's Division) and president of the nursing division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

The war was brought close to home for the Athlones also because many of those belonging to displaced European royal families sought refuge in Canada and resided at or near the royal and viceroyal residence, Rideau Hall. Among the royal guests were Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha of Norway; Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Felix of Luxembourg; King Peter of Yugoslavia; King George of Greece; Empress Zita of Bourbon-Parma (Austria) and her daughters; as well as Queen Wilhelmina and her daughter, Princess Juliana. Further, in December 1941, British prime minister Winston Churchill arrived at Rideau Hall, where he presided over British Cabinet meetings via telephone from his bed.

The viceregal couple also played host at Quebec City to prime minister Mackenzie King, as well as Churchill and United States president Franklin D. Roosevelt, who all gathered to take part in what would become known as the Quebec Conferences, with the first taking place between 17 and 24 August 1943 at the viceregal residence in La Citadelle, and the second occurring from 12 to 16 September 1944 at the Château Frontenac. Photos of the Earl with Roosevelt, Churchill and Mackenzie King on the ramparts of the Citadel during the Quebec Conference were widely published at the time.

It was at these meetings that the four men discussed the Allied strategies that would eventually lead to victory over Nazi Germany and Japan. When Germany fell on 8 May 1945 and Japan on 15 August of the same year, Athlone led the national celebrations held on Parliament Hill and elsewhere. He thereafter spoke in speeches about Canada's future being marked not by war but by a strong role in reconstruction and reconciliation.

During their time in Canada, the Athlones also supported various charitable and social events, and mounted a number of tobogganing parties and skating lessons on the grounds of Rideau Hall, as well as skiing in Gatineau Park. Before the couple departed Canada at the end of Athlone's time as the King's representative, he left as a legacy the Athlone-Vanier Engineering Fellowship, awarded by the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Post-World War II

At the end of World War II, the American Military Government in Bavaria, under the command of General George S. Patton, arrested and imprisoned Alice's brother, Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, (who served as a member of the Reichstag from 1937 to 1945), because of his Nazi sympathies. Alice, learning of her brother's incarceration, came to Germany with her husband to plead with his American captors for his release. They would not yield, and in 1946, he was sentenced by a de-nazification court, heavily fined and almost bankrupted.

Royal duties

In her lifetime, Princess Alice carried out many Royal duties. Apart from her normal duties as Vicereine of South Africa and then Canada, she attended the Coronations of four monarchs: Edward VII, George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II. She was also the Colonel-in-Chief of two British Army units and one Rhodesian Army unit. During the Second World War, she was Honorary Air Commandant of the Royal Canadian Air Force Women's Division. In 1950, she became the first Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (then the University College of the West Indies). From the 1930s-60s she was Chair of the Council (governing body) of Royal Holloway College, University of London.

Later life

The Earl of Athlone died in 1957 at Kensington Palace in London. Princess Alice lived on there until 1981, when she died at age 97 years and 313 days. At her death, she was the longest-lived British Princess of the Blood Royal and the last surviving grandchild of Queen Victoria. However Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother later became the longest-lived member-by-marriage of the British Royal Family until her sister-in-law Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, broke the record, living even longer beyond her 100th birthday.

Her funeral took place in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, attended by all members of the Royal Family. She is buried alongside her husband and son in the private British Royal Burial Grounds at Frogmore, directly behind the mausoleum of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, in Windsor Great Park. Her daughter and son-in-law are also buried close by.

She lived through six reigns:- Queen Victoria (grandmother), Edward VII (uncle), George V (cousin and brother-in-law), Edward VIII (first cousin once removed and nephew), George VI (first cousin once removed and nephew) and Elizabeth II (first cousin twice removed and great-niece).

In 1934 Princess Alice was assigned her own personal coat of arms. As a granddaughter of Queen Victoria in the male line, Princess Alice was entitled to use the Royal Arms, with a 5-point label as a difference, the central point bearing a cross gules, the others hearts gules.

Trivia

In 1953 when visiting Eastbourne, she was conveyed around in a Rolls Royce owned by suspected serial killer John Bodkin Adams.
