An Introduction to Phonetics: IPA Consonants Part II
Make sure to check out part I if you haven't yet: http://youtu.be/6ARmSo19RB0 Also, check out the addendum to part one for more information on phonetics (it's short): http://youtu.be/Aw1m-MhpcrE Last time we learned about place of articulation. This time we are going to learn about how linguists classify consonant sounds by manner of articulation which will help us to distinguish between the different sounds that occur at each place of articulation. Voiced sounds are sounds that we make when we vibrate the vocal cords and voiceless sounds are produced without vibrating the vocal cords. Some sounds like [f] and [v] are only distinguished from other sounds by their voicing. [v] is a voiced labiodental whereas [f] is a voiceless labiodental. Aspirated consonants are consonants that release a puff of air when pronounced, unaspirated consonants do not release a puff of air when they are pronounced. A good example of this difference between aspirated and unaspirated sounds is the 'p' in 'pit' and the 'p' in 'spit'. The 'p' in 'pit' is aspirated. The 'p' in 'spit' is unaspirated. While most sounds in English are oral sounds made when the velum is in its raised position, some sounds are nasal, made when the velum is in its lowered position allowing air to pass through both the oral and nasal cavities. We also discuss the general groupings of consonant sounds: stops, fricatives, affricates, approximants (which include liquids and glides), flaps (or taps), and nasals.- published: 03 Sep 2013
