The New School Arts Festival: Conversation with Frances McDormand
THE NEW SCHOOL | http://www.newschool.edu
The New School Arts Festival is a first—a cultural showcase reflecting the artistic and intellectual energy of the entire university. Each year, the festival will explore a single theme by presenting works from genres with an artistic home at The New School, including design, drama, film, literature, music, and critical theory. Each festival will feature renowned guest artists and theorists, discussion of contemporary criticism, and original work created by New School students and presented at festival events all around campus.
MFA WRITING | http://www.newschool.edu/writing
The theme of our first arts festival is Noir, a cinematic style of shadowy expressiveness that had its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s. Coined by a French critic in 1946, the term film noir refers to movies depicting a morally ambiguous world of cynical private eyes, lonely gangsters, and femme fatales. Since then, the influence of noir has been felt in areas ranging from fashion design to fine art, graphic art to fiction, suggesting the alienation and disorientation of modernism through stark silhouettes, sexual frankness, stylized emotion, and the absence of sentimentality. Join The New School community in an exploration of noir in a festival of iconic films, hard-boiled storytelling, graphic art, and illustration inspired by this uniquely 20th century style.

Film Description: Joel and Ethan Coen's jet-black comedy Burn After Reading begins with CIA agent Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) losing his job. This prompts his long-suffering, unfaithful wife (Tilda Swinton) to consult a lawyer about divorcing him. Osborne decides to write a book about his exploits, but an early draft of his work ends up lost at a gym where it's found by the dim-witted Chad (Brad Pitt, and the plastic-surgery obsessed Linda (Frances McDormand). They decide to blackmail Osborne in order to help Linda pay for the numerous procedures she wants to undergo. Things grow even more complicated when Linda starts an affair with Harry (George Clooney), who also happens to be sleeping with Cox's wife.

Together, playwright DAVID LINDSAY-ABAIRE and MTC have brought four outstanding new plays to the New York stage. Their most recent collaboration, RABBIT HOLE, earned Lindsay-Abaire the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Now, he returns to MTC, along with RABBIT HOLE director and Tony Award® winner DANIEL SULLIVAN, to premiere his newest work, the timely and powerful GOOD PEOPLE. FRANCES McDORMAND (Academy Award winner for FARGO; star of MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY and ALMOST FAMOUS), TATE DONOVAN (star of DAMAGES) and a marvelous group of actors from stage and screen make up the vibrant cast of this world premiere play.
Welcome to Southie, a Boston neighborhood where a night on the town means a few rounds of bingo... where this month's paycheck covers last month's bills... and where Margie Walsh has just been let go from yet another job. Facing eviction and scrambling to catch a break, Margie thinks an old fling who's made it out of Southie might be her ticket to a fresh new start. But is this apparently self-made man secure enough to face his humble beginnings? Margie is about to risk what little she has left to find out.
With his signature humorous glow, Lindsay-Abaire explores the struggles, shifting loyalties and unshakeable hopes that come with having next to nothing in America.

"Story Medium" - FRANCES McDORMAND
Share this post:
On stage or in front of a camera, in highly stylized or traditional fare, Frances McDormand is adept at creating singular characters in whatever imaginary world she is called upon to inhabit. Last year she incarnated a ratatat military ensign with a filthy mouth in The Wooster Group’s loopy experimental theater piece North Atlantic; Her current role is Margie, a working-class South Boston woman caught in the crossfire of her own life’s choices and lack of choices. And then there are her notable turns on screen in Mississippi Burning, Short Cuts, Laurel Canyon, and North Country. Blood Simple, her second job as an actress, was not only McDormand’s film debut, but also her introduction to Joel Coen, her husband of 29 years. A regular repertory player in the Coen brothers' films, she has appeared in Raising Arizona, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Burn After Reading and Fargo, for which she won an Academy Award. McDormand currently stars on Broadway in the world premiere of Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) presented by the Manhattan Theater Club. Good People runs through April 24, 2011 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater.

Fargo - Trailer
Written and directed by the Coen brothers (1996). Jerry Lundegaard is in a financial jam and, out of desperation, comes up with a plan to hire someone to kidnap his wife and demand ransom from her wealthy father, to be secretly split between Jerry and the perpetrators. Jerry, who is not the most astute of individuals, hires a couple of real losers from the frozen northern reaches of Fargo, North Dakota for the job. Then things begin to slip from bad to worse as Jerry helplessly watches on. Starring Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, and Steve Buscemi.
