Oberheim OB-Xa 8-Voice Analog Synthesizer from the year 1980.

The Oberheim OB-Xa is one of the greatest analog poly-synths ever. A classic! Van Halen`s powerfull Jump and 1984 Intro sound is the OB-Xa.
The sound character of the curtis chip based OB-Xa is very different to the early discrete and SEM based OB-X. The sound is harder and not so lush. Check my OB-X demo vids! But the OB-Xa sound is more raw, organic and warmer as the the later OB-8. The OB-Xa was available with 4, 6 or 8 voice cards.

As long time users of the Oberheim OB8 and 2 Voice (take a listen to our "Occupations" EP as both are on it all over the place) we were pleasantly surprised when Dave Smith Instruments showed us their new analog workhorse and collaboration with the inimitable Tom Oberheim— the OB6. The allure for the Oberheim polyphonic sound, for us, has always been it's unique melancholic tone colour. No matter what kind of sounds are programmed, Oberheim's tend to have this wonderful midnight music vibe, like driving in a car late at night circa 1983. We're pleased to report that the OB6 captures this sound quality effortlessly and in spades.
Our approach to the design of the factory bank patches we submitted (most of which you hear in the demo) was rather simple: we made the same kinds of sounds we would program on our Oberheims, and barring a couple, largely ones we would find useful in a production context. Though we don't typically record synthesizers with FX printed on the same track, the FX engine is so wonderful sounding on the OB6, and highly controllable, that it made us reconsider. In short, the FX engine is no slouch, and for the many decades spent dismissing the on board FX of most 'modern' synths, this is the first time that we've heard an FX engine exude the same quality as the top end hardware units from Lexicon, Eventide, or AMS that we tend to use in the production process.
Everything you hear on the demo was done entirely on the OB6. Absolutely NO additional FX or sequencers were used. We simply ran the stereo output from the OB6 into a DI and a stereo mic pre amp directly into Pro Tools HD and tracked it in.

The demo video shows some self programmed classic synth sounds.
The Oberheim OB-X is one of the best analog poly-synths ever. The sound character (based of the discrete circuits and the SEM design VCF) is different to the later curtis chip based OB-Xa and OB-8.

Mitch Gallagher sits down with synthesizer legend Tom Oberheim for a special interview at Sweetwater's GearFest 2015. A pioneer of the synth and MIDI world, Tom Oberheim co-designed the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM), a device that allowed musicians to simultaneously combine live playing and sequenced playback - a concept that pre-dated the MIDI revolution. In 1981, he, along with Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi and Sequential's Dave Smith, developed the MIDI spec, which changed the course of modern music. Tom recently re-released his famed Two Voice synth.

Synthesizer demo of the OBERHEIM MATRIX-1000 (1988) and MATRIX-6/R (1986). What you actually hear in this demo is a single Matrix-6R, but the Matrix-1000 has the same sound engine, it sounds the same. My Oberheims are in original state with the original firmware.
In this movie I play my own sounds - on some sounds I used a little amount of reverb from a Lexicon MPX-500 or a delay effect from a Korg SDD-3000 (right channel only), but no further effects. Drums and bass sequencing by Akai MPC 1000 (but no multitrack recordings, no eq, no compression).
The Oberheim Matrix-1000 and Matrix-6/R produce a high quality analog synthesizer sound and have a huge sound potential. 2 oscillators per voice, 24 dB lowpass filters, modulation of filters by oscillator (similar to Micromoog, SCI Prophets or even Six-Trak, here called FM), osc. sync, 2 VCAs, 3 envelopes, 2 ramp generators, 2 LFOs - and the best of all - MATRIX MODULATION. A lot of parameters can be assigned to each other.
The Oberheim Matrix-1000 is the single rack version of the Matrix-6 and can be edited via MIDI sysex only.

Oberheim Electronics is an American company, founded in 1969 by Tom Oberheim (a former designer and contract manufacturer for Maestro), which manufactured audio synthesizers and a variety of other electronic musical instruments.
Originally a manufacturer of electronic effects devices (most notably the Maestro phase shifter), and briefly an ARP Instruments dealer, Oberheim went on to create several ground-breaking products in the early days of synthesizers and electronic music including the DS-2 (one of the first digital music sequencers) and the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM).
One of the first commercially available polyphonic synthesizers, Oberheim's Two-voice TVS-1, Four-voice FVS-1 in 1975, and Eight-voice in 1977, which was the four voice frame with an external 4 SEM module, configurations were based on the SEM. The Two-voice synthesizer included a two channel voltage controlled sequencer, and the Four-voice and Eight-voice machines included a rudimentary Programmer, capable of recalling sound settings.

A classic! Van Halen`s powerfull Jump and 1984 Intro sound is the OB-Xa. The sound character of the curtis chip based OB-Xa is very different to the early discrete and SEM based OB-X. Mitch Gallagher sits down with synthesizer legend Tom Oberheim for a special interview at Sweetwater's GearFest 2015. A pioneer of the synth and MIDI world, Tom Oberheim co-designed the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM), a device that allowed musicians to simultaneously combine live playing and sequenced playback - a concept that pre-dated the MIDI revolution. In 1981, he, along with Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi and Sequential's Dave Smith, developed the MIDI spec, which changed the course of modern music. Tom recently re-released his famed Two Voice synth. Synthesizer demo of the OBERHEIM MATRIX-1000 (1988) and MATRIX-6/R (1986). What you actually hear in this demo is a single Matrix-6R, but the Matrix-1000 has the same sound engine, it sounds the same. My Oberheims are in original state with the original firmware. In this movie I play my own sounds - on some sounds I used a little amount of reverb from a Lexicon MPX-500 or a delay effect from a Korg SDD-3000 (right channel only), but no further effects. Drums and bass sequencing by Akai MPC 1000 (but no multitrack recordings, no eq, no compression). Our approach to the design of the factory bank patches we submitted (most of which you hear in the demo) was rather simple: we made the same kinds of sounds we would program on our Oberheims, and barring a couple, largely ones we would find useful in a production context. Though we don't typically record synthesizers with FX printed on the same track, the FX engine is so wonderful sounding on the OB6, and highly controllable, that it made us reconsider. In short, the FX engine is no slouch, and for the many decades spent dismissing the on board FX of most 'modern' synths, this is the first time that we've heard an FX engine exude the same quality as the top end hardware units from Lexicon, Eventide, or AMS that we tend to use in the production process.
Everything you hear on the demo was done entirely on the OB6. Absolutely NO additional FX or sequencers were used. We simply ran the stereo output from the OB6 into a DI and a stereo mic pre amp directly into Pro Tools HD and tracked it in.

A pioneer of the synth and MIDI world, Tom Oberheim co-designed the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM), a device that allowed musicians to simultaneously combine live playing and sequenced playback - a concept that pre-dated the MIDI revolution. In 1981, he, along with Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi and Sequential's Dave Smith, developed the MIDI spec, which changed the course of modern music. Tom recently re-released his famed Two Voice synth.

You can buy these patches for your Matrix-1000/6/6R - read the description for further details (scroll down).
Synthesizer demo of the OBERHEIM MATRIX-1000 (1988) and MATRIX-6/R (1986). What you actually hear in this demo is a single Matrix-6R, but the Matrix-1000 has the same sound engine, it sounds the same. My Oberheims are in original state with the original firmware.
In this movie I play my own sounds - on some sounds I used a little amount of reverb from a Lexicon MPX-500 or a delay effect from a Korg SDD-3000 (right channel only), but no further effects. Drums and bass sequencing by Akai MPC 1000 (but no multitrack recordings, no eq, no compression).
The Oberheim Matrix-1000 and Matrix-6/R produce a high quality analog synthesizer sound and have a huge sound potential. 2 oscillators per voice, 24 dB lowpass filters, modulation of filters by oscillator (similar to Micromoog, SCI Prophets or even Six-Trak, here called FM), osc. sync, 2 VCAs, 3 envelopes, 2 ramp generators, 2 LFOs - and the best of all - MATRIX MODULATION. A lot of parameters can be assigned to each other.
The Oberheim Matrix-1000 is the single rack version of the Matrix-6 and can be edited via MIDI sysex only.

These patches are completely different from the numerous ROM presets inside the Matrix-1000.
The AnalogAudio1 patches have been programmed with various controller assigned to the modulation wheel and aftertouch pressure for further performance expressiveness and various real time motion and tonal effects. Also included is a patch list (PDF), to find the right sounds quickly.
The patchbank can be loaded into an Oberheim Matrix-1000, Matrix-6 and Matrix-6R. (Of course this bank will not work with the Oberheim Matrix-12 or Xpander).
This unique sound package gives you a lot of inspiration and adds more character to your music - which is essential to be successful.

The OB-Xa based on Curtis CEM ICs and sounds more smooth.
Both are great synths and I love both a lot. The king class of polyphonic analog synthesizers.
This is the sound.
no compression, no EQ, only a bit delay used.
