Gary Numan - Cars
www.numan.co.uk Singer-songwriter, musician, producer and pilot. *** LYRICS *** Here in my car I feel safest of all I can lock all my doors It's the only way to live In cars Here in my car I can only receive I can listen to you It keeps me stable for days In cars Here in my car Where the image breaks down Will you visit me please? If I open my door In cars Here in my car I know I've started to think About leaving tonight Although nothing seems right In cars *** Released : August 1979 *** According to Gary Numan, the song's lyrics were inspired by an incident of road rage: "I was in traffic in London once and had a problem with some people in front. They tried to beat me up and get me out of the car. I locked the doors and eventually drove up on the pavement and got away from them. It's kind of to do with that. It explains how you can feel safe inside a car in the modern world... When you're in it, your whole mentality is different... It's like your own little personal empire with four wheels on it". ♥───────── † ──────────♥ Gary Numan (born Gary Anthony James Webb on 8 March 1958) is an English singer, composer, and musician. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of commercial electronic music and has been described as the "King of synthpop." Good Times - Chic (1979)
"Good Times" is a 1979 song composed by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. It was first recorded by their band Chic, for their 1979 album "Risqué". The lyrics are largely based on Milton Ager's "Happy Days Are Here Again". It also contains lines based on lyrics featured in "About A Quarter To Nine" made famous by Al Jolson. Nile Rodgers has stated that these depression-era lyrics were used as a hidden way to comment on the then-current economic depression in the United States. In August of that year, it became the band's second number one single on both the Billboard Hot 100 and soul singles chart. Along with the tracks, "My Forbidden Lover", and "My Feet Keep Dancing", "Good Times" reached number three on the disco charts. The song has become one of the most sampled tunes in music history, most notably in the song "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang. Other artists who have sampled "Good Times" or used its bassline for inspiration include Queen, Daft Punk, The Beastie Boys, Joe Budden, Vaughan Mason, Kool & The Gang, Mick Jagger, Busta Rhymes, Digital Underground, Change, Will Smith, Indeep, Public Enemy, INXS, Grandmaster Flash, Blondie, Kurtis Blow, Fugees, Justin Timberlake, De La Soul, LL Cool J, and many others. The song is ranked #224 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Chic (pronounced 'sheek', sometimes fully capitalized as CHIC) is an American disco and R&B; band that was formed in 1976 by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard ...

The China Syndrome
Released just a few weeks before the nuclear reactor meltdown at Three Mile Island, this eerily prophetic film about a nuclear accident waiting to happen was nominated for four Academy Awards®. The story revolves around an ambitious TV reporter (Jane Fonda) who witnesses a nuclear accident that plant supervisors deem "a little glitch." But her camerman (Michael Douglas) secretly films it, and it becomes clear that the "glitch" nearly caused a reactor meltdown, and that it could happen anytime. When the plant's veteran engineer (Jack Lemmon) discovers the problem and tries to bring it to light, an attempt is made on his life. In desperation, he forcibly takes control of the plant and invites the media to hear his testimony. But the plant's corporate officers will stop at nothing to make sure their secret never gets out. "Heart of Glass" is a song and single from the 1978 album, "Parallel Lines", by Blondie. The album was released on Chrysalis Records (EMI) and was produced by Mike Chapman. The album has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and is the band's most successful release. Six of the album's tracks were released as singles, including the big hit "Heart of Glass". "Heart of Glass" was written by Deborah Harry and Chris Stein and produced by Mike Chapman. The single was released in January 1979 on Chrysalis Records and was a #1 hit in many countries, including the UK and the US This video version of "Heart of Glass" is not seen as often as the Studio 54 version and makes an interesting comparison, especially regarding Deborah Harry's appearance. Cliff Richard - We Don't Talk Anymore (1979)
Britain's answer to Elvis Presley, Richard (born Harry Webb) dominated the pre-Beatles British pop scene in the late '50s and early '60s. An accomplished singer with a genuine feel for the music, Richard's artistic legacy is nonetheless meager, as he was quickly steered toward a middle-of-the-road pop direction. Several of his late-'50s recordings, however, were genuinely exciting Presley-esque rockers -- especially his first hit, "Move It" (1958) -- and gave British teenagers their first taste of genuine homegrown rock & roll talent. Backed by the Shadows -- clean-cut instrumental virtuosos who became legends of their own -- Richard embarked on a truly awesome string of hit singles in Britain, scoring no less than 43 Top 20 hits between 1958 and 1969. One of these, although it was by no means one of the more successful, was an actual Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition (the ballad "Blue Turns to Grey"). In his homeland, Richard's popularity was diminished only slightly by the rise of the Beatles, but in his prime, he had a much rougher time in the US, hitting the Top 40 only three times (with "Living Doll" in 1959, "It's All in the Game" in 1963, and "Devil Woman" in 1976). Richard belatedly cracked the US Top Ten in 1976 with "Devil Woman," and racked up a few other hits ("We Don't Talk Anymore," "Dreaming," "A Little in Love") in a mainstream pop/rock style. He remains an institution in Britain, where he is one of the nation's most popular all-around entertainers of ...

Pearl Jam Twenty
Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band’s formation, the chaos that ensued soon-after their rise to megastardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them—giving way to a work culture that would sustain them. Told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, the film is carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely-seen and never-before seen footage spanning the band’s career. Pearl Jam Twenty is the definitive portrait of Pearl Jam: part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists.

I made this film in 1979-80 to accompany a SIGGRAPH paper on how to synthesize fractal geometry with a computer. It is the world's first fractal movie. It utilizes 8-10 different fractal generating algorithms. I used an antialiased version of this software to create the fractal planet in the Genesis Sequence of Star Trek 2, the Wrath of Khan. These frames were computed on a VAX-11/780 at about 20-40 minutes each.

Life Of Brian- 1979 Debate (1/4)
The full debate from "Friday Night, Saturday Morning", 9th November 1979. On the edition of 9 November 1979, hosted by Tim Rice, a discussion was held about the then-new film Monty Python's Life of Brian, which been banned by many local councils and caused protests throughout the world with accusations that it was blasphemous. To argue in favour of this accusation were broadcaster and noted Christian Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood (the then Bishop of Southwark). In its defence were two members of the Monty Python team, John Cleese and Michael Palin. The first part is an interview with Cleese and Palin, the actual debate starts 3 minutes into part 2.

Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang (1979)
