TunePlay - SPECIES (1996) Christopher Young
1979's ALIEN was a seminal film. While low budgeters like Mario Bava's PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES (1965) had earlier attempted the gene-splicing of horror into sci fi, ALIEN was the first to do so seriously and with a degree of scientific (as well as character and narrative) credibility. In it's wake, just as EASY RIDER had set off a trend of (mostly inferior) "youth films", SHAFT a series of sub-par "blaxploitation" actioners, and THE EXORCIST a line of thrillers the devil himself would be ashamed to have his name on, so would ALIEN give birth to a new sub (par) genre - the horror/sci fi hybrid consisting of low rent fare such as INSEMINOID and GALAXY OF TERROR. John Carpenter's 1982 take on THE THING and David Cronenberg's re-imagining of THE FLY ('86) would emerge as the two best such genre "cross breeds", but both were remakes. And the crown for the best ORIGINAL "splicing" act since ALIEN would be relinquished to Roger Donaldson's fast, often funny and highly perceptive thriller SPECIES (1995).
Written by Dennis Feldman (THE GOLDEN CHILD), SPECIES, on it's surface, posits an IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE-like plot about an advanced alien race which responds to human radio signal "invitations" by sending a sample of it's DNA to earth. The sample, genetically combined with our DNA, produces a part man / part alien being which (of course) escapes the lab, goes on a murderous rampage, and must then be hunted down by an assembled team of experts. The best genre films however make comment (serious or satirical) on contemporary society. And what separated (separates) SPECIES from the pack of ALIEN "also rans" is firstly that it's "part man / part alien" monster takes the form of knock-out international model (and former Oil of Olay cover queen) Natasha Henstridge - here in her film debut. As the beautiful shapeshifting extraterrestrial "Sil", Henstridge cuts a seductive and destructive swath through the city of LA, taking men (and the movie audience) off guard as, in keeping with Darwinian theory, she seeks (like all species introduced into a new environment) to survive by procreating as quickly as possible. SPECIES would also, somewhat controversially, make wry statement on female competitive-ness and sexual manipulation, and in the process be called "misogynistic" by some and "feminist" by others. It would magnify this subtext with a creature from the mind of legendary surrealist painter / sculptor H.R. Giger (known for his sexually charged "bio-mechanical" art as well as the original ALIEN creature). It would be slickly directed by New Zealander wunderkind Roger Donaldson (SMASH PALACE, NO WAY OUT); star an impressive cast including Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker, Michael Madsen, Alfred Molina and Marg Helgenberger. And lastly, showcase one of the most colorful of scores from the busiest (if most underrated) of composers - Christopher Young.
Known mostly for thrillers such as JENNIFER 8, GHOST RIDER, SPIDER-MAN 3 and DRAG ME TO HELL, Young's early career saw him providing music to low budgeters such as DEF-CON 4 and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. 2, until Clive Barker's HELLRAISER stunned cinema and music aficionados in 1987 with it's "dark opera" opulence. While since making a name with dramas (THE HURRICANE, ROUNDERS), sci fiers (VIRTUOSITY, THE CORE) and even love stories (LOVE HAPPENS, WHEN IN ROME), Young always returns to that which gave him artistic birth - the horror milieu (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, SINISTER). While in parts utilizing contemporary electronics and rhythm section, SPECIES, in today's era of "ProTools", is an elegant reminder of old school composition. Opening with an ethereal Saint-Saëns-esque Main Title against a swirling star constellation, within the film's first ten minutes, Young also roars down the musical / emotional highway from gothic melancholia ("Protostar") - when 12 yr. old "Sil" (a pre DAWSON'S CREEK and MY WEEK WITH MARILYN Michelle Williams) is set to be exterminated in her lab cell by cyanide gas, to off-rhythmic Bartok-ian violence with "Wormhole" - as young "Sil" escapes the lab and vanishes into the Utah desert. Also notice the gorgeous goosebump-inducing "soft choir" coda at the climax of the End Title piece "Star Bright".
In 2008 Young was honored with BMI's prestigious "Richard Kirk Award" - bestowed upon a composer who has made significant contributions to the art of film and television music.

Species 1 (HQ-Trailer-1995)

Film Description: Good gorillas meet bad gorillas while human beings search for treasure in this jungle advnture saga. R.B. Travis (Joe Don Baker) is the ruthless head of Travi-Com, a telecommunications firm on the cusp of a major breakthrough in laser communications technology. However, Travis needs diamonds to finish the project, so he sends a group of men to Zaire, where he's told that a large supply of the gems can be easily found. When the men go missing, Travis sends his trusted assistant Karen Ross (Laura Linney), a one-time CIA associate, into the jungle to find both his staff and the jewels. Hoping to keep her mission a secret, Karen travels to Zaire in the company of Peter (Dylan Walsh), a researcher on primate development who is hoping to return Amy, a gorilla who has been taught sign language and can "speak" English with the help of a glove-controlled computer device. Also travelling with them is Herkermer (Tim Curry), a Romanian with a secret agenda: he's convinced that Amy can guide him to the Lost City of Zinj, where he believes that King Solomon's Mines are located. Upon arrival, the group is met by Monroe Kelly (Ernie Hudson), a self-described "great white hunter who happens to be black," and they discover that the jungle holds a menace that they weren't counting on: a tribe of bloodthirsty gray gorillas. Congo was based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Michael Crichton.

Species II Official Trailer!
In the science-fiction thriller Species (1995), Natasha Hentsridge appeared as the beautiful but deadly Sil, a human-alien DNA combo. In this sequel, Hentsridge portrays Eve, a government experiment concocted to gain an understanding of how to combat future aliens, while Michael Madsen and Marg Helgenberger repeat their roles from the earlier film. When astronaut Patrick Ross (Justin Lazard) returns from the first manned Mars expedition, he's infected with the same DNA that spawned Sil and Eve. Hailed as a hero, Ross is pressed into politics by his father (James Cromwell), a senator. Any woman who beds the sexually active Ross is immediately impregnated, with embryos quickly developing and killing the mother. Ross hides the offspring on a family estate, as LA cops begin to detect a pattern in the female deaths. At the lab where scientists are monitoring Eve, Dr. Laura Baker (Helgenberger) realizes that Eve has a telepathic link with Ross, and that these two hybrids hope to couple. Press Lennox (Madsen) and Colonel Burgess (George Dzundza) figure Eve can be used to lead them to Ross. Cleared as a murder suspect, Mars mission astronaut Dennis Gamble (Mykelti Williamson), joins Lennox and Baker and gets in on the action as everyone involved closes in on Ross. Richard Belzer does a cameo as the President of the U.S., while Peter Boyle makes an uncredited appearance as a scientist.
