Intro to Philosophy: Big Questions about Love, Friendship, and Desire
In this portion of a session from my Fall 2013 Intro to Philosophy class at Marist College, I lead my students through some discussion of a key set of themes that are motivating the rest of the readings and discussions for the class -- issues about Love, Friendship, and Desire. We explore some of the big, thorny questions that arise when we think about or even just experience these. We also discuss how these themes fit into the traditionally distinguish areas of Philosophy, like Ethics, Metaphysics, Aesthetics, etc. I set out four terms from Greek -- Eros, Agape, Philia, and Storge -- and discuss how these are often used in order to distinguish between different types of love. I also caution my students against thinking that what we're going to be studying -- or what they experience -- breaks down so neatly in reality. The Ancient Greeks did use these sorts of terms, but quite often the boundaries between these categories were considerably more fluid than the typograpies of 20th century interpreters make them out to be.- published: 01 Sep 2013

Intro to Philosophy: Plato, the Lysis
Intro to Philosophy: Plato, the Lysis
In this session from my Fall 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we begin our study bearing on topics of love, friendship, and desire by focusing specifically on one of Plato's early, aporetic dialogues, the Lysis, in which the central theme is the nature of friendship. We start by a bit of discussion of the structure, characters, and setting of the dialogue, and some pointers on how to "read between the lines" when approaching a Platonic dialogue. Then, we explore some of the various models of love or friendship set out in the course of the dialogue -- hitting on topics like love as infatuation, the love of a responsible caregiver, love for things one is passionate about, friendship or love as stemming from need and usefulness, friendship as mutual love or affection, friendship based on commonality or similarity, who can be friends with whom. . . and we finish by introducing the notion of the "congenial" (to oikeion) or "befitting".- published: 03 Sep 2013

Logic as an Instrument in Greek & Arabic Philosophy
Logic as an Instrument in Greek & Arabic Philosophy
Peter Adamson (LMU) gives a talk at MCMP. As is well known, the Aristotelian works on logic were collectively referred to in antiquity as the Organon, meaning "instrument". Ancient Aristotelians took this seriously: for them, logic is not a part of philosophy but only a tool or instrument which one should ideally learn before embarking on the study of philosopher proper. This view was not universally adopted in antiquity, however. The Stoics made logic one of three broad areas of philosophy (along with ethics and physics), and thought of these areas as closely interrelated "parts". In this paper I explore the philosophical consequences of this apparently rather superficial disagreement; for instance, it bears on the question of the extent to which logic was perceived in the ancient world as a "formal" discipline. I also pursue the part vs. instrument debate into the Arabic tradition. There, we find adherents of Aristotle torn between their desire to agree that logic is a mere instrument, and not a part, of philosophy, and their desire to show the importance of logic against its detractors.- published: 28 Oct 2013
