Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea; Papua New Guinea, officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, is a country in Oceania, occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and numerous offshore islands (the western portion of the island is a part of the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua). It is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, in a region defined since the early 19th century as Melanesia. The capital is Port Moresby. Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries on Earth. According to recent data, 841 different languages are listed for the country, although 11 of these have no known living speakers. There may be at least as many traditional societies, out of a population of about 6.2 million. It is also one of the most rural, as only 18% of its people live in urban centres. The country is one of the world's least explored, culturally and geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought to exist in the interior of Papua New Guinea. Strong growth in the mining and resource sector has led to PNG becoming the 7th fastest-growing economy in the world as at 2011. Despite this, the majority of the population still live in traditional societies and practise subsistence-based agriculture. These societies and clans have some explicit acknowledgement within the nation's constitutional framework. The PNG Constitution expresses the wish for "traditional villages and communities to remain as viable units of Papua New ...

Travel Wild - Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is one of the last places in the world where tribal culture still designates strongly through its foundations but as western civilization encroaches will it displace these traditions?Well the good news is Lin travels to one of her favorite destinations Papua New Guinea to get in the thick of it and find out how tourism is in fact helping generate an income for villages that showcase their culture attracting visitors from around the world to experience these traditions. Enjoy the passion of the destination through the eyes of the people who live there and breathe in the lush environment that makes up their surroundings.Lin travels with an operator Orion who really works hard to ensure their expeditions truly represent an accurate vision of the destination they travel to and ensure that the villages and locations they visit will not be displaced by the tourism they bring in.This program will bring to you the culture, color, beauty and festivities of destination Papua New Guinea showing the diversity of a country that has over 600 languages and some of the most intact tribal culture in the world, some tribes still having minimal contact with the outside world.See active volcanoes, cruise the Sepik River and visit the islands that truly make this place so remarkable but do it in a style that really embraces the traditions of culture and the heart of New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea: Land of the Unexpected
Get more great videos: www.youtube.com Be our Myspace friend: myspace.com Few areas of the globe can match Papua New Guinea in terms of biodiversity. The country's rugged natural settings are home to a staggering array of wildlife, including more than 21000 species of higher plants, 200 species of mammals, and 700 species of birds. Papua New Guinea's indigenous clans are linguistically just as diverse; more than 800 languages are spoken within the nation's borders. These numerous clans also hold the key to conserving both their cultural and natural wealth of their country, specifically because they control approximately 90 percent of the nation's territory through a system of traditional land tenure. Because almost all of the land in Papua New Guinea is owned by its people, and not by the government, conservation efforts need to be approved and enforced by the local landowners. Crater Mountain is one of these landowner and NGO cooperative conservation initiatives in PNG.

Huli Wigmen - Papua New Guinea
March 2006 The PNG Huli men are said to be the fiercest warriors in the world. But they have a surprising soft side -- an obsession with hair. Boys spend years constructing elaborate wigs. "It is very important for a young Huli boy to have a wig. That's why the boys go to wig school", explains Huli Harold Hayake. To grow strong, healthy hair, the young men live together in a monastic lifestyle under the guidance of a wig master. Only after their wig is ready can they marry. 101 East - Battered and Bruised
Family violence has reached epidemic levels in Papua New Guinea, the South Pacific's largest nation. Two out of three women experience domestic violence and 50 per cent of women have experienced forced sex or gang rape in the South Pacific's biggest country. In PNG's Western Highlands Provinces, 97 per cent of women surveyed by an NGO said they had been attacked by male family members. From middle-class households in the capital Port Moresby to villages where tribal law rules an estimated one million children live in volatile family environments.

101 East - The rush for resources
The South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea is cashing in on its wealth of natural resources. But despite these economic windfalls, wealth and life expectancy are on the decline. On this edition of 101 East we ask, how much of Papua New Guinea's wealth of natural resources is reaching its people?

Images Of Papua New Guinea - Scene 1
As promised this is the first installment of my journey to the remote islands and villages of Papua New Guinea on the vessel the True North.
I was asked by owners Craig Howson and Mark Stothard to record the journey through the lens of my trusty 5D mk2 in a way that highlights the beauty of this spectacular country.
I was slightly nervous about PNG as you hear stories about it being an unsafe travel destination but this could not be further from the truth. It was so the opposite that I hope my short productions can dispel any doubts people have about this wonderful country.
Northstar Cruises have been building and fine tuning their Adventures in Paradise PNG tour for 5 years now and it's a credit to the crew of True North for it's well planned, interactive, and safe tour through one of the most remote places in the world.
Papua New Guinea is one of the most beautiful, clean and friendly places I have ever visited and am hoping to return one day to see more of this spectacular land.
It's a photographers paradise and as with the remote Kimberley of Western Australia one of the best travel experiences available.
For all of you who care this production was shot by me using the following equipment. Boy was I tired after I got back.
Two Canon 5D mk2's, Canon lenses 16/35mm, 24mm, 85mm, 18mm tiltshift, 400mm. Fostex FR2LE Field Recorder, Rode Mic's, Azden Wireless Mic's, Aqua Tech Water Housing, Various filters, Lee, Polarizers etc. Macbook Pro, MacPro, Final Cut Studio 7.

Dancing with the Huli Wigmen
This was a surprisingly not-so-difficult clip to get. I arrived in Tari, Papua New Guinea with no plans or arrangements and no idea what I was doing.
I met Patrick on the runway and told him I hoped to find the Huli Wigmen. He said "no problem" and we hopped in a truck.
I visited some Huli villages and wandered around the area all morning. Patrick took me to the Wigmen's village and introduced me. It took them an hour or so to get dressed up, and then we had to sit around waiting for the rain to stop.
It stopped, then this happened, then I paid them for their time, and that was that.

Children Of Papua New Guinea
I was fortunate enough to be invited back on True North to experience their "Adventures in Paradise" tour which started in Kavieng In Papua New Guinea and finished at Alatou.
It is an amazing journey which allowed us to interact with many villages that still had no resemblance of twenty first century life. It was like stepping back in time to another world. I was given the opportunity to film many of the children in these villages and I have put together a short collage of some of these.
It was an incredibly moving experience. The excitement on their faces at our arrival and the warmth shown to us was something I will remember for a long time.
The "True North" is the only adventure vessel which visits these areas and makes a logistical nightmare seem effortless. It was a trip of a lifetime and I hope to revisit this amazing country one day.

SPLINTERS Teaser
In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo, Papua New Guinea.
Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but also a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic.
A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way.

Before It's Too Late - PNG Land of the Unexpected | Storyteller Media
Deep in the heart of Papua New Guinea lies a species-rich rainforest, while its coast is fringed with rare unspoilt coral reef. Both areas provide habitat for some extraordinary creatures who face an uncertain and bleak future --extinction. For centuries this forgotten paradise has been hidden from the eyes of the industries that have left such a devastating mark on similar treasures, but that is no longer the case. Pollution, hunting, mining and logging pose real and immediate threats to these habitats. We take a look at what is being done to save these creatures and the world they have inhabited for so long. It is a rare opportunity to see some of nature's best-kept and most enchanting secrets, including the tree kangaroo, the long-beaked echidna, the cassowary as well as the rich marine life. Watch as we meet the remarkable individuals and organisations dedicated to giving the species of Papua New Guinea a fighting chance at survival... before it's too late.
