The Cultural Space and Oral Culture of the Semeiskie
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The Semeiskie communities are formed by a group of so-called Old Believers, a confessional community originating from the time of the Instigation of the Russian Orthodox Church in the seventeenth century.Their history is marked by repression and exile. During the reign of Catherine the Great, believers in the old system from various regions of Russia had to move to the Transbaikal region in Siberia, where they still live today. In this remote area, they have preserved elements of their respective culture, forming a distinct group identity. The cultural space of the Semeiskie, east of Lake Baikal, represents a remnant of cultural expressions from pre-seventeenth century Russia. The community, totalling around 200000 persons, speaks a south Russian dialect featuring borrowings from Bielorussian, Ukrainian and Bouryat. The Semeiskie still practised ancient orthodox rituals and perpetuate everyday activities mainly based on the cult of the family - the term Semeskie refers to those who live as a family - and strong moral principles. They are also characterized by their traditional dress, handicrafts, dwellings, paintings, ornaments and food as well as their music. Also noteworthy are their polyphonic choirs, which perform traditional songs at family celebrations and popular festivals. These songs are known as drawl singing and are rooted in the Russian ...

'Russian Amish': Children of the schism (RT documentary)
They lead a quiet life out of public view and keep distant from worldly matters. Religious books written in the Old Slavonic language are studied and food is all homemade. Married women are obliged to cover their head, while men have beards. The length of their dresses, trousers and shirt sleeves is strictly regimented - most of the body is covered. Living, eating or praying together with lay people is out of the question. They are the Old Believers. Russian Old Believers - photo project by Mikhail Evstafiev
Since the late 1990s, I have been documenting the lives of Old Believers, the heirs of the thousands and thousands of Russians who rejected the 17th century Orthodox Church reforms, were heavily persecuted for that and forced to flee to remote areas or even to other parts of the world in order to survive. This project has taken me to different regions of Russia, Romania and the United States. Today's world is more tightly integrated than at any other point in history. Our lives are influenced by the process of globalization, which has swept across the planet, drowning cultures, mixing peoples and imposing on them a market-driven way of life based on a common mass culture. Yet some groups, like the Old Believers, bonded by old-style religious beliefs, have preserved a different way of life with a deep sense of tradition and values, creating environments in which morality and the many values it represents are still sustained. But for how long will they survive? Could such communities be an example of one of the last stands against globalization?

Excerpt from the film OLD BELIEVERS, a Facets Video release. Directed by Jana Sevcikova . Formore info or to order this film, visit www.facetsdvd.com or contact sales@facets.org. Facets Multi-Media is a non-profit media arts organization founded in Chicago in 1975, and dedicated to making cinema accessible to all through film preservation, distribution, presentation, and education. For more information, visit www.facets.org In the outlands of Eastern Europe, acclaimed filmmaker Jana Sevcikova spent years chronicling the descendants of immigrants and exiles. The resulting poetic, intimate documentaries capture the unique lives and customs of people unknown to most of the world. Shot over five years, the award-winning Old Believers (2001, 46 mins.) documents a strongly religious community where time seems to stand still. This haunting film presents the meditative rhythm of the place, giving transcendental significance to even the most ordinary everyday tasks. Sevcikova further explores the humanity and mystery of people from another place and time in Piemule (1984, 43 mins.), offering a close look at the descendants of Czech immigrants in Romania, and Jakub (1992, 65 mins.), the story of Ruthenian Jakub Popovich in western Bohemia.

Father and Son
I was ambivalent about sharing this video publicly, but my Mother asked me to do it, so I will follow her judgment.
I made this video with and for my father, Larry Zander, who died a few weeks ago, on May 27, 2011. He was 78.
For those of you who knew my Dad, you will instantly recognize him in his natural habitat.
To those of you who never met him, just know the river was his Church.
He taught me everything of value, including how to respect others, and how to love and engage the Lord with my mind as well as my spirit.
He also taught me something that I only came to realize as an adult, and that is the immense capacity of the human heart.
You see, I didn't meet Larry until I was eight years old.
He was not my biological father.
When my Mother first brought Larry into my young life, quite naturally my first instinct was to resist.
Yes, resist this stranger who was not only showing my Mother a great deal of attention, but was also replacing me as the man of the house!
Resist both him and his attempts to love me.
I can't tell you when it happened, there was no definitive moment, but somehow I learned to trust not only Larry, but God, too, for I truly believe He introduced Larry to my Mother.
Both of them knew what they were doing, though I was too young to know it.
When I stopped resisting, only then did I find love.
Last summer I asked Dad if we could shoot this video with my new camera, and so we awoke before dawn - uncomfortable for me, but old-hat to my Dad, a lifelong fisherman!
We spent the day together up on Crystal River in Waupaca, Wisconsin.
During Christmas 2010 I showed him this video, not without trepidation. After all, I had selected Cat Steven's "Father and Son" to underscore the piece, and I was initially concerned that Dad wouldn't like the theme of the song.
When the video ended, I looked over at him sitting on the other end of the couch.
He was doubled-over, crying. He looked up at my Mom and simply said, "Play this at my funeral."
Which we did, on Memorial Day, in our backyard beside his trout pond.
Happy Father's Day, Dad. I will always love you.
And thank you for everything.
-your son, William
UPDATE: 22 June 2012
After the recent increase of views over Father's Day, my mother asked me to include this addendum:
"I want to thank everyone that has seen, and everyone that has commented on, the video of my husband Larry Zander. Thank you all for your wonderful words, you have helped me through this time of loss. Everyone has touched my heart. God bless you all. Thank you!
-E.J., Larry's wife and William's mom"

VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945
http://www.discoveringhawaii.com Four and a half million people have viewed my film “The Bravest Generation.” The praise and sentiment have been genuine and universal, and I thank you for that. Benjamin Franklin said, "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
I wonder if the Americans seen in this film, immortalized at their finest hour and praised by us, would even recognize the generations they have spawned — today’s American citizens, quite happy to present themselves and their little babies for genital fondling by TSA personnel in return for the government’s promise of “safety.”
405,399 US servicemen and servicewomen died defending our Constitutional freedoms and our American way of life in WWII, only to have these eagerly surrendered by today’s Americans without so much as a whimper of protest. Rather than a real-life Hitler or Tojo, today we have the manufactured boogeyman of terrorism to keep people locked into a cage of ever-present fear. Witnessing such an insult on a daily basis puts me in awe of the courageous men and women who once populated this country, citizens who walked face-forward toward the enemy and certain death, rather than surrender their, and therefore their descendants’, freedoms.
In tragic contrast, now, in the second decade of the New Millennium, we witness millions of obedient sheep at our airports raising their hands — and their skirts — in full surrender. And this is just the beginning.
It is no accident that this depravity comes at a time in history when most of The Bravest Generation have died off. Those who yet remain are now too old, too sick — or too disgusted with the rest of us — to stage much of a protest.
Thousands of US military, firefighters, airline pilots, and building engineers have a lot to say to you… unless you believe these professionals know less than do the politicians.

hair-whip heartbreak
Naomi is 16, and works with us at photography factory when she is off school pretty much as an equal member. Lets be honest age is irrelevant in a great picture, plus she has a sense of the social media space to rival the best new media agency analysts. All the newest trends are always playing out as only she predicts. Her detailed clear and analysis of youth culture on the internet is worth a million dollars to us and she is a key member of our team. More importantly her simple black and white photographic portraits are utterly brilliant, an evocation of sub suburban teenage life as seen though the eyes of a 15 (now 16) year old girl. But on the day of this slow motion test Naomi was not her normal beautiful smiling dry sarcastic self (think Juno with a camera). Recently she had a relationship with a Hollister lookalike boy end in an unfair way (what was ever fair about being 16?) and have to get it all dragged around the internet as the aftermath played out on FaceBook in a very modern and very public way. So in other words she was putting on a brave face. We all involved setting up the high speed camera and needed someone to stand in as a lighting dummy, When shooter one had the idea to getting someone to shake their hair around... and see how it might look at 2000 fps. Naomi stepped up to the plate and quite shocked us by the force and passion she used to whip. The beguiling result is here... if you look at here closely you can see something else:
Something about that action and the air swishing though her hair just seemed to change her mood, as if she had just tossed away the weight of an the old nightmare, something thick and heavy that had been clinging to her, but suddenly it was gone. As she was hair whipping for the camera, shooter one quietly said to himself:
"Go girl, shake that boy right out of your hair..."

Jon Krakauer wrote, “In any human endeavor, some fraction of it's practitioners will be motivated to pursue that activity with such concentrated focus and unalloyed passion that it will consume them utterly. As a result of this infatuation, existence overflows with purpose. Through immoderation, he experiences something akin to rapture.”
Yosemite Valley has long been regarded as the holy land for climbers and boulderers throughout the world. The origins of rock climbing lie in the 3000-foot granite walls lining the valley and the boulders that sit strewn about below these staggering monoliths.
In the late weeks of November, the Louder Than 11 crew gathered from all corners of the country to experience Yosemite Valley bouldering. As a group of passionate individuals, we enveloped ourselves in the landscape for two weeks, attacking boulders as if tomorrow would never come. On the surface, the very foundation of our identities is built on rock climbing—a sport that we believe is the greatest on the planet—but there is much more to this seemingly inherent addiction than meets the eye.
With Park Life, we strive to answer this age-old, omnipresent question: Why? By combining difficult climbing, captivating visuals, and engaging music under the all-encompassing umbrella of a professional production company, we hope to portray a unique lifestyle that has given us all a palpable sense of unwavering purpose. The long-lasting friendships, incessant failure and equally abundant success, reckless commitment and dedication driven to the point of complete and utter irresponsibility; it’s an eternal battle. We do it because we love it. At LT11 our media is always free, whether you like it or not.

Margaret Hixon's 1981 film documents a real-life wedding in the Old Believer settlements of Marion County, Oregon, in the years 1979 and 1980. The film briefly touches on a wealth of traditional arts (embroidery, clothing construction, weaving, vernacular architecture, folk song and foodways) and beautifully presents a whole series of rituals -- the "devichnik" (engagement party), "selling" the bride and her braid, the wedding feast, the bargaining over the dowry, and the ceremony of bestowing gifts and advice to the newlyweds. In English and Russian with subtitles or voice-over translations. (for more information on the Old Believers go to libweb.uoregon.edu
