HUD Homes - Investing in Housing and Urban Development Houses
What are HUD Homes? - www.reimaverick.com The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, is a federal department that administers federal programs that deal with better housing and urban renewal, including affordable housing. Usually when you hear the term HUD homes it is in reference to homes for rent in which the owner has agreed to receive rent subsidies from the government in addition to receiving a reduced rent payment from a renter that wants to reside there. On other occasions, HUD homes refers to a property that's totally owned by HUD and for sale at an inexpensive price. Investing in HUD Homes There are several ways of investing in HUD homes. For a good long-term strategy you can purchase a home and rent it out with guaranteed subsidized payments from the government. You could also purchase a home from HUD at a good price and fix it up to flip. Just remember when purchasing HUD homes, you have to evaluate them just like any other real estate investment. If it will be a rental, you have to do the math to discover if you will have positive cash flow. If you plan to fix it up and offer for sale it, be sure there is sufficient profit after the cost of repairs and closing costs. Remember: just because they are HUD homes doesn't mean that they are a great deal, do your homework. Public Domain (Domínio Público) - English Subtitles
We started filming this documentary independently over one year ago with very little funding, which we obtained by throwing a party. The crew waived their salary and we received equipment free of charge. During this period we roamed through the communities of Vidigal, Vila Autódromo, Providência, the port region of Rio and the surroundings of the Maracanã stadium, collecting images, interviewing residents, participating in their meetings, debates and conflicts. These communities have been recognized as some of the most affected by real estate speculation, a phenomenon in which housing prices are increasing due to preparation for the major world events to be hosted in Rio: the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. As a result of the rising prices, Rio residents, primarily the poorest residents are being forced to move to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and services and are dominated by heavily armed militia.
We then began to investigate were these billions of Brazilian reais directed towards the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics are being directed. It is quite clear that a large sum of this money will come from tax payers’ pockets, only to be used for the financial gain of a small group of contractors, politicians, bank owners and businessmen involved in these events. The legacy left for the benefit of the majority of the population will be minimal. And worst of all, many communities are being removed illegally in areas of great real estate interest, and the residents are relocated to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and are dominated by a heavily armed militia.
In addition, we have acquired images of UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) in Mangueira, and the Almeão Complex cable car, through our collaborators. We also interviewed professor Carlos Vainer of the Institute of Research and Urban and Regional Planning of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IPPUR/UFRJ), an expert in the field of mega events and state and federal deputies Marcelo Freixo and Romario. In the case of the latter we were obliged to visit Brasilia and took the opportunity to film the nation’s capital and the construction being done at Mané Garrincha stadium.
Do you believe change is possible, but you’re not sure how to help? Collaborate with us! The script is not complete, but together we can rewrite the end of this story. Your donation will help us produce and share this information, helping society to decide its own future. We need 90,000 reais (approximately 45,000 USD), a minimal sum to film extensively and finalize our film, publicize on the internet, and to exhibit the film in the streets, parks and communities through Cine Ataque, translated as “Film Attack,” We believe our film can create world wide awareness to these deplorable acts being committed against the Brazilian people. Together we can change this reality. Participate!!!

Absolute Body Control
Epopoeia of the Food and Drink of the United States (A Dream in Hell)
1
Beautiful like a baby calf is the song of chicken fried with batter,
the long red and white picnic tablecloth is finer than the finest lady’s legs, the finest thing there is to embark upon a heaping bowl of coleslaw,
shrimp from the gulf coast are delicious, gushing with wine as if feeling,
like honey mussels, in Redmond or Olympia, harvested by fishwives, in the seaweed,
and the glory of banjos in Baton Rouge, their juices course through them like
ageless autumn lemons,
like mom's fragrant pot pie, chocked full of juicy stew, widens the gullet,
and, baked, cries out blooming peach tree blossoms.
2
What would you say to some barbecue ribs, burning hot
grilled on a charcoal fire in June on the banks of a man made lake,
pines or cedar trees that sum up the dramatic atmosphere of a
damp sunset at Lake Lanier or Stone Mountain,
or to a clam chowder, whose name is inextricably related to Manhattan or
Rhode Island or New England?
No, you hunt quail and you grill it, just like you hear honky-tonk or stars and stripes
at the feet of Mount Rushmore, and fried catfish along the Chattahoochee
where it leaps into the sacred sizzling skillet, superbly fine
river fish, makes fishing boats rich while the sisters Lee,
as if in pain, sweat what's human and divine on the grand antique family fiddle.
3
Tremendous turkeys that smell like summer, almost human, autumn shades of
walnut or chestnut, I eat them everywhere, and in D.C. I kiss them,
like the vats where barley sighs like the prettiest girl in Jersey
raising her skirt underneath the lights of the big apple, same
as the roof off of a block party with streamers and flags where we drink in red plastic cups
a substantial whiskey and beer,
or the love mattress, upon which we set sail and sighing face each other and
the night’s tremendous oceans, into whose horrible darkness,
black and tenacious flows the bloody calla lily,
or the teardrop that falls in our moths as we joyfully sing.
4
Napa Valley wine is enormous and dark in the California sunset, and when
it's in your blood, nostalgia
and the apology to heroism sing in the wheels of spurs to
the beast’s hide, dancing to the fundamental tune of backwater rapids
against the frothy red glare.
5
Nicely aged bourbon bellows in its cellars like a great sacred cow,
and St. Louis will be golden, like a rib-eye on the grill, all over
the bloodied paths towards Oklahoma, autumn's
guitar will weep like a soldier's widow,
and we'll remember everything we didn’t do and could have and
should have and wanted to, like a madman
staring down a town's abandoned well,
watching, ear shattering, the engines of youth rev down dawn's
wide gust
crumbling like memories in the abyss.
6
The saddle glows all across the Midwest, mountain range to mountain range, booming like a great combine with its 20 foot span, booming
like a cow auctioneer or a righteous pastor or tornado season,
lasso raised up against the sky
on top of a guffaw, a hyuck or a yeehaw, splashed with sun and hard work, where manure perfumes dung heaps like a domestic god, with tremendous balls like a widow.
7
A mighty log cabin with its open yard, apple trees, front porch
scented with remote antiquity,
where the bootlegger and his still would sing, drop by drop, a sense of eternity into
the water, recalling old ancestors with its tremulous pendulum,
exists, same as in Madison as in Franklin or Fairview or Springfield,
although it’s the little town of Hodgenville Kentucky that most proudly proclaims the wooden troughs or pig iron pots, wide open spaces, the Appalachians, the original wild west, civil war and emancipation, in little log cabins,
from Tennessee to Ohio, who express it proudly in tremendous language, eating ears of pigs eating ears of corn.
8
Because, if it's necessary to stuff yourself with hot dogs in a Detroit Coney before dying,
on a rainy day, blessed with a strawberry milkshake from fresh upstate dairy, and smoke, bathing in conversation, friends and the munchies, launching yourself into terrible leaps and bounds, blubbering, savoring the booming chili in spoonfuls and fries,
it's also necessary to get your meat from the Kansas City stockyards in March, when the pigs
look like televangelists and the televangelists look like swine or hippopotamus,
and wash the food down with some fiery sips from a short glass,
yes... in Dallas or Fort Worth the corn tortillas look like the local ladies: wide white waists and sleepy half moon eyes, since, ticklish and cuddly,
they turn their faces, and let themselves be kissed, unendingly on either end.
9
And the chit'lins, swimming and searing in broth and tabasco, and the cornbread that moaned in broiling bacon fat, is blessed where thunder rolls in wide whips, along the Mississippi, between one drink and the next,
but it never surpasses a gamy partridge, savored in the dry underbrush of July,

Dieter Rams, designer - Cold War Modern
Every company makes the same design with dark brown wooden housings. They called that in Germany [unclear]. It’s always a compliment when some products you have designed become a nickname, like the ‘Snow White Coffin’. Nobody knows exactly where it’s coming from, it comes from the competition or it comes from the inside. The first thing was not only the cover, it was only the base, the main base in metal. I was influenced by my grandfather who was a carpenter and he was a specialist with surfaces. I learnt that from him, but I had in mind to study architecture. After that I finished my studies. That was a time where in Germany there was nothing, so things come back from the United States, for example, with architecture – there’s things from … Gropius, from Marcel Breuer – all these things come. And it was for us just to look in a New Brave World.
Somebody said that there is an announcement in the newspaper that there’s a company called Braun. And then I get an answer from Braun – I met him first and he told me about his ideas. His vision was to change the product line. It was at this time unbelievable – totally new approach as a company. But that was the thinking behind it - it was not only concentrated on design – design was one part. In the company there were possibilities that people could have things because even secretaries doing always the same things the whole day, they need something to stay healthy.
The first exhibition of the new design of the radios was very successful. The media and everyone was surprised about that, so Braun became more known. Nobody had this idea that by the help of design, you also could be very successful.
I did it because I became a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, so it was necessary to do something which you could tell the students and could tell to the press and also to keep together our own behaviour in the design department at Braun. The last one was as little design as possible, which is a similar lesson.
I hate everything that is driven by fashion. From the beginning I was hating in the 60s the American way of styling, especially cars. They changed their styling things every 2 years and designed new ones which is nothing to do with good design.
So at the end of the 60s the whole programme was looking like that. In the beginning were the first writing machines. It was also monochrome – why should it not be in a colour? It’s a difference between a kitchen machine that stays permanently in the kitchen and has to be in the background like … it was thought our products should look like an English butler – be there when you need them, but in the background when you don’t need them. So it depends on the product to make it colour or not.
I was involved always and still in the field of furniture. And then I met Otto Sap and Nils ??? I had in my mind always thinking not one blinds alone but always thinking how can I add something? Specially developing furniture - people could change them, they could add something after using them a while.
Somebody has written that I am the designers’ designer – I take that as a compliment. I also take it as a compliment that ??? is taking some of the ideas I had in the 60s and that is for me, again, the best compliment you can get as a designer.
They called it later the first Walkman because it was the first one you could have with earphones and walking with it. It was also designed as a system – separate radio. They made an exhibition with the and they make this poster.
I think that design has a great, great responsibility for the future. I am always optimistic – as a designer you have to be an optimist, otherwise you should not stay as a designer any more.

Waverly Development
The third installment of the Legacy project, James Rouse is imposed with his own words back onto one of his first development projects in Waverly, Baltimore. Built in 1957, the Waverly development was one of the very first Urban Renewal sites in the United States. Housing stock designated as slum land was cleared for around 300 units and a small shopping center and was originally reserved for white families only.

Catherine Austin Fitts: We Must be Self-Sufficient Ahead of The Coming Global Disasters 1/3
Alex welcomes back to the show Catherine Austin Fitts, president of Solari, Inc., the publisher of The Solari Report, and managing member of Solari Investment Advisory Services. Fitts served as managing director and member of the board of directors of the Wall Street investment bank Dillon, Read & Co. Inc., as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development in the first Bush Administration, and was the president of Hamilton Securities Group, Inc. Catherine Austin Fitts' understanding of the global financial system and the inner workings of the Wall Street-Washington axis are unparalleled. As the former US Assistant Secretary of Housing/Federal Housing Commissioner, Catherine was one of the first to warn of an approaching housing bubble. Her prediction that a 'strong dollar policy' would ultimately lead to a weakened federal credit is currently being proven correct. solari.com

HUD's Affordable Housing Crisis
As the Obama Administration plans to implement their recently signed $787 billion rescue plan, one of the areas they will immediately be forced to confront is the ongoing housing crisis. The stimulus gives the Department of Housing and Urban Development $13.6 billion to address the needs of low-income families across the country. Experts say it's a good start, but new HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan is facing an enormous task, as he attempts to overhaul an agency that is facing years of neglect and mounting debt.
