Shark Attacks New Zealand Man 'Adam Strange' To Death At Muriwai Beach
A shark possibly 14 feet long killed a swimmer near a popular New Zealand beach on Wednesday, then disappeared after police attempting to save the man fired gunshots at the enormous predator.
Muriwai Beach near Auckland was closed after the fatal attack, one of only about a dozen in New Zealand in the past 180 years.
Pio Mose, who was fishing at the beach, told The New Zealand Herald he saw the swimmer struggle against the "huge" shark. He told the man to swim to the rocks, but it was too late.
"All of a sudden there was blood everywhere," Mose said. "... I was shaking, scared, panicked."
Police Inspector Shawn Rutene said in a statement that the swimmer, who was in his 40s, was about 200 meters (650 feet) offshore when the shark attacked. He said police went out in inflatable surf-lifesaving boats and shot at the shark, which they estimate was 12 to 14 feet long.
"It rolled over and disappeared," Rutene said, without saying whether police are certain that they killed the creature.
Police recovered the body of the swimmer, whose name was not immediately released because his relatives had yet to be notified.
About 200 people had been enjoying the beach during the Southern Hemisphere summer at the time of the attack. Police said Muriwai and other beaches nearby have been closed until further notice.
Police did not say what species of shark was involved in the attack. Clinton Duffy, a shark expert with the Department of Conservation, said New Zealand is a hotspot for great white sharks, and other potentially lethal species also inhabit the waters.
Attacks are rare. Duffy estimated that only 12 to 14 people have been killed by sharks in New Zealand since record-keeping began in the 1830s.
"There are much lower levels of shark attacks here than in Australia," he said. "It's possibly a function of how many people are in the water" in New Zealand's cooler climate.
He said that during the Southern Hemisphere summer, sharks often come in closer to shore to feed and to give birth, although that doesn't necessarily equate to a greater risk of attack.
"Ninety-nine percent of the time they ignore people," he said. "Sometimes, people get bitten."
Around the world, sharks attacked humans 80 times last year, and seven people were killed, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. The death toll was lower than it was in 2011 but higher than the average of 4.4 from 2001 to 2010.

New Zealand : Great White Shark kills TV director Adam Strange at Muriwai Beach
An award-winning film and TV director was today mauled to death by a Great White shark as he swam off a popular New Zealand tourist beach.
Adam Strange, 46, was attacked and pulled under water about 200metres from Auckland's Muriwai Beach at around 1.30pm in front of hundreds of beach tourists.
Up to three more sharks were said to have been drawn to the attack as police officers fired at least 20 shots from a lifeboat and helicopter in a desperate bid to rescue him.
The Great White eventually let go and moved away. It took rescuers -- including three lifeguards who knew the victim - 30 minutes to retrieve the father-of-one's body.
The remains of a shark were later dragged up on the beach.
Mr Strange's family - said by police to be 'utterly distraught' - today described the father-of-one film-maker as a 'glorious and great father, husband and friend'.
His wife Meg was last night being comforted by friends and neighbours, who brought flowers to their home, not far from the Muriwai beach.
Pio Mose, who was fishing off rocks beside the beach, described how he saw a 'huge' shark attack the lone swimmer 50 yards from where he was standing.
'All of a sudden we saw the shark fin and next minute, boom, attack him and then blood everywhere on the water,' told stuff.co.nz.
He told how the man appeared to struggle with the shark before it swam away -- and then it, and others, came back.
Mr Mose called the police on his mobile while a friend ran to get help.
'He was still alive. He put his head up. We called him to swim over the rock to where we were.'
'He raised his hand up and then while he was rising his hand up we saw another attack and pull him in the water.
'He came back up. His head was on the water...then we notice he was already dead'
Mr Mosie said as blood spilled out over the water, more sharks started swimming around the area.
The fisherman and other anglers watched as the shark carried the man's body out to sea.
'It's awful -- it's scary, like a nightmare to me. I was shaking, scared, panicked.'
Mr Mosie, who said he had never seen sharks in the area during the three years he'd been fishing in that spot, added: 'All I was thinking was I wanted to jump in the water and help but I didn't want to get attacked by a shark, too.'
Wellington student, Stef McCallum, 18, said people were first aware something was wrong when a man ran across to the surf club to get help.
'A woman told us a man had just been killed by a shark', she said. 'She said there was a big pool of blood in the water.'
Miss McCallum said they saw a police officer go out in a surf boat and shoot the shark.
Inspector Shawn Rutene said he could not confirm whether the shark that was shot was involved in the initial attack.
Muriwai Surf Lifesaving chairman Tim Jago said the three lifeguards helping police, two aged in their twenties and one in his forties, knew the victim.
Lifeguards were shocked by the size of the shark, he added. Beaches north of Manukau Harbour will be closed for the next two days, including Piha and Muriwai beaches.
Helicopters will patrol the area until tomorrow morning and lifeguards will have a strong presence.
Mr Jago said they have used every available 'closed' beach sign to alert beachgoers. The risk would be reassessed in two days.
Police were unable to confirm the species of shark, but environmental department officials confirmed Great Whites had been spotted in the area as recently as the weekend.
Earlier this week, surfer Bourne Nobel Buiski posted on Facebook that there had been a 'massiv' shark spotted near on Monday at Piha, south of Muriwai.
He said that a local man ran out of the water 'white-faced and terrified'.
'He was saying that a Great White, a massive Great White had just swum right beside him,' he said adding that no-one believed the report.
'As they are so rare here. There were about 60 people there, and no one came in.'
Adventure-loving Mr Strange says on his website that one of his short films, Aphrodite's Farm, had been in 10 international film festivals in seven countries and last year won the Crystal Bear award for Best Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival.
He has also been a finalist at the London International Awards. His wife Meg was last night being comforted at her home, not far from the beach.
Mr Strange's family, some of whom live overseas, said in a statement that Mr Strange was a 'glorious' person, a 'great father, husband and friend.'
On his website, Mr Strange gave an indication of his love of the outdoors
'When I get a spare five minutes,' he wrote, 'I like to make a fruit smoothy, surf some big waves out on the West Coast (of Auckland) point my skis down a mountain with Meg, haul my mountain bike up and down a few hills, drink some Pinot while scratching away at a film script.'

Man Captures Video Of Strange Explosion In The Sky « CBS Sacramento 12/30/12
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- A Sacramento man scanning the night sky caught a sudden burst of light through his telescope. He recorded that strange sight with his smart phone.
CBS13 shared the video with experts to see if they could solve the mystery.
This mysterious little tale begins earlier this week when Good Day Sacramento's Cody Stark got this message on Facebook: "I have something on video no one has ever seen. I had my telescope out, caught an explosion in space. Wanna see the video?"
Cody's response? Absolutely!
The video was shot with an iPhone through the eyepiece of a telescope, so CBS13 had to enlarge it to get a better look. It was shot on Dec. 20 around 5 p.m. in Sacramento by viewer Elijah Prychodzko.
"I saw something that I'd never seen before. I saw another object orbiting this — whatever it was up there, and I've never seen anything like that before," said Prychodzko.
He thought it was a little strange so he put his phone down, called his nephew, and then returned to shoot a second video clip.
"Oh my God, it just blew up. Something blew up," he's heard saying on the video.
"As soon as I put the camera to the telescope it just blew up and I didn't know what to say," he told CBS13.
So Cody sent the video off to Dr. Stephen P Maran, who wrote the book Astronomy for Dummies.
Dr. Maran responded by saying he didn't recognize the "explosion" as a known astronomical phenomenon. "My personal opinion is that it is not an astronomical event," he wrote.
Whatever it was, it was almost never seen by Dr. Maran or anyone else — because Prychodzko nearly sold it on Craigslist.
"Almost got rid of it a week before. I was trying to sell it on Craigslist and I was getting offers and, man, you know what, at this time I'm glad I didn't sell it," he said.
CBS 4 also contacted a Vatican expert who said it could be some sort of light refraction."

Still shocked and excited from last night, it's an honor for us to show you this absolutely MINDBLOWING TITLES made for OFFF by PostPanic.

Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
Says Ania Markham, Executive Producer at PostPanic:
“The images created by the crew of people working on the titles has been unbelievable, with nationalities represented including Dutch, Czech, English, American, Polish, German, Swedish and Belgian. It’s been a great opportunity for all of us to work together on a non-commercial project we’re passionate about and we’re so proud of the combined effort and final result.”
DIRECTORS NOTES (Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully,

In April 2010 a massive oil spill began in the Gulf. The entire country was glued to the news until the well was capped, and then we forgot about it.
As the year anniversary was approaching I became curious, just how much oil was that exactly? Where would it have gone? What I found was shocking.
So in an effort to further our discussion on oil dependency I created this short animation to help illustrate just how dependent we truly are on oil.

Year Zero - OFFF Barcelona 2011 Main Titles
Following in the footsteps of Prologue Films and The Mill, PostPanic have created this year’s prestigious opening titles 'Year Zero' for OFFF Festival 2011 in Barcelona http://offf.ws/bcn2011/
Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES (By Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully, an uncomfortable feeling and lots of questions - some might feel unsatisfied and wondering why. Just like a nightmare.
We also wanted the actual titles to be different this time. Most of the time festival titles are driven by the idea on how to show titles. A mechanism that displays titles in a creative way. We actually thought to bring the festival theme to the foreground and have the titles play a part in it. Incorporate them so they become the actual fiber/texture of the

Somethings Strange Is Going On
I never claimed it were due to God, I'm just reflecting to the bible, see most people miss the ENTIRE message in the video. Yes the world has change BUT we were never there during those changes, granted we may have experienced great difficulty but the things that are occurring in and around our world today is that of a secret. We are not told what we are not suppose to know, remember, the government are professionals at keeping secrets from the masses. How do we know for a 100000000000% fact that everything we see happening around us is legit?
All around the world reports of millions of animals dying and suddenly dropping dead such as Whales, Dolphins, Turtles, Fish, Birds, Crabs. People all around the world have also been hearing a very strange noise coming from the sky above. Strange occurrences happening in and around out sun with planet sized objects seen around it. THEY don't tell you what you're not suppose to you. THEY don't want you too know, that's why you are blinded by today's trends. You're brainwashed and programmed to accept what is given rather then search for answers and find out what is REALLY going on in the world. WAKE UP!
