During her time with Boyd she is chooses to be ignorant that her husband is raping her daughter Raylene. Novella: a bold, sassy, and promiscuous woman that is Marva's best friend. However, Novella represents woman's empowerment. She knows how to use any man for own benefit instead of being used herself. She is loyal, intuitive and caring. She warns Marva about Boyd and comes to the aid of Raylene. Hattie: The mother of Marva. She is a selfish gold-digger that is willing to do anything to make a few bucks, even sell her own daughter. She is caring, and loving, but unable to deal with Boyd's abuse for long. A martyr she is willing to take punishment to prevent her little sister to become victimize by Boyd. Boyd: A manipulative, controlling, jealous, and evil person. However, he only bullies people that are too afraid or weak to stand up to him. As the husband of Marva and step-father of Raylene, he rapes Raylene and impregnates her when Marva is away from home. He threatens to hurt the people Raylene loves if she does not follow his orders.
