Karnataka polls: Big win for Cong, BJP decimated
In a major boost to the Congress, the party not only emerged victorious in Karnataka urban body elections but also dealt a massive blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by relegating the ruling party to a distant second place.
With results in around 4,500 wards of a total of nearly 5000 announced on Monday afternoon, the Congress, clearly benefiting from multi-cornered contests, bagged 1,913 wards, while BJP was second with 899 wards in it kitty. The JDS of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda was a close third 898 seats.

Shane Watson pulls out of tour, to return to Australia: reports
Hours after he was axed from Australia's squad for the third Test on disciplinary grounds, the allrounder has reportedly decided to quit the tour of India.
In the aftermath of Australia's innings-and-135-run defeat in the second Test at Hyderabad, Arthur had on Tuesday requested the players to present three ways in which they and the entire team could improve. Barring the four aforementioned players, all of Australia's squad replied via email or SMS or on letters submitted to Arthur under his hotel door before the Saturday deadline.

Wells dry up in Aurangabad village, when will govt wake up?
Drought-stricken and desperate, Gadana village in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, is a sea of wells. It's a tragic contradiction since most of the wells are dry. Government rules specify that only one well for drinking water can be dug at every 500 metres. The Gadana village, however, has 18 wells - eight in a 60 metre area! Yet, they have no water.
A resident of the village tells us that they have spent a lot of money digging the wells. "We have to travel to other places by bullock cart for water. The village well has some water but not enough," another resident tells us.

Delhi gangrape: Probe on to find truth behind Ram Singh's death
The main accused in the Delhi gangrape-murder case, Ram Singh, was found hanging in his Tihar Jail cell under mysterious circumstances on Monday morning, raising questions over monitoring of undertrials in the prison. While the preliminary report suggested it was a case of suicide, Ram Singh's family and lawyer said there was no reason for the gangrape accused to kill himself and alleged that he was murdered inside the jail.
The death of 33-year-old accused has raised questions over the security of prisoners in Tihar Jail as Ram Singh was already under a 'suicide watch' and there were two more inmates in the cell in which he was found hanging at around 5:45 am. A guard was also posted outside his cell to keep an eye on him.

AgustaWestland deal: FIR to name ex-IAF chief Tyagi
In a huge setback for former Indian Air Force (IAF) Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is all set to file an FIR against him under sections of cheating and bribery in the AgustaWestland VVIP helicopter deal. CBI officials believe that Air Chief Marshal (retd) SP Tyagi accepted a bribe from his cousins to help AgustaWestland's entry into the tender process to supply 12 VVIP helicopter to India.
Sources say SP Tyagi's cousins - Sanjeev and Docsa Tyagi - were involved in defence deals in India and not power projects as they have been claiming. Sources says kickbacks were paid to the Tyagi brothers through fake engineering contracts in Mauritius and Tunisia

Karnataka local elections: Congress takes lead
The Congress has taken early lead in the Karnataka local polls, which have been billed as semi-finals before the state elects a new Assembly in a couple of months. Initial trends show that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is finding the going tough and has not been fully able to counter the BS Yeddyurappa effect.
There are a total number of 4976 seats for which counting is taking place. The Congress is doing very well in Bellary and Dakshin Kannada.
The Bellary brothers, who had launched the BSR Congress, are also trailing in their stronghold with the Congress leading in all the seats. The party is also leading in areas dominated by the JDS. In what could be a massive blow to the BJP, the party is trailing at the fourth place.

Ram Singh's death unlikely to affect gangrape trial: Kiran Bedi
Ram Singh, the prime accused in the Delhi gangrape case, was found dead inside his cell in Tihar jail on Monday morning. Jail officials said he had committed suicide by hanging himself inside the cell using a piece of cloth that he tore off from a mat. While the Tihar jail has ordered an inquiry into the incident that is likely to cause it huge embarrassment, questions are now being raised on whether his suicide will affect the trial in the case.
While ex-chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Poornima Advani, has said that the trial will be adversely affected, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi said that if the prosecution was strong and if it had all the evidence, the trial would go on smoothly. "It just means one accused less," Kiran Bedi told CNN-IBN.
