The Daguerreotype: Photographic Processes
The discovery of this process forever changed our understanding of time. For the first time in history we could see what our ancestors looked like. Take a look behind the scenes into our world class photograph collection from within our vaults.

Early Photography: Making Daguerreotypes
he daguerreotype is a one-of-a-kind, highly detailed photographic image on a polished copper plate coated with silver. It was the first popular photographic medium and enjoyed great success when it was introduced in 1839. Although primarily a nineteenth-century medium involving a painstaking process, daguerreotypy is still practiced today by an active--and avid--group of devotees.

Jerry Spagnoli Makes a Daguerreotype Plate
Jerry Spagnoli is an acknowledged expert in the field of Daguerreotype photography. This six minute video gives a hint of how Jerry goes about making one of his images.
Using the Becquerel method, Jerry teaches aficionados how to make their own Daguerreotype plates using non-lethal ingredients and modern instruments.
Watch the video and see why you should take one of Jerry's workshops, like this one given at the Photographers' Formulary in Condon, Montana!

The Nanotechnology of the Daguerreotype
(credit: Cincinnati Waterfront Daguerreotype Panorama, Fontayne and Porter, daguerreotypists, 1848 // Owned by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County http://1848.cincinnatilibrary.org )
The daguerreotype is widely considered to be the first form of photography, invented by Frenchman Louis Daguerre in 1839. The George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, NY owns one of the largest collection of these unique photographic artifacts, with over 5,000 in their collection. Conservators who have been working with and studying this remarkable technology have discovered that the silver plates that the images are recorded on have been deteriorating over time, but up until recently they haven't been able to explain why.
This is where physicists at the University of Rochester enter into the equation. Using advanced technology such as a scanning electron microscope (SEM), they have been able to observe previously unknown properties of these more than 150 year old photographic plates. Nicholas Bigelow, the Lee A. DuBridge Chair in Physics and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy has been looking at the nanostructure of these very old and very high resolution photographs and finding that they are actually a biologically active surface. Using the SEM they can see remarkable hybrid organic-metallic features that appear to be growing on the plates, like fungi. The images obtained with the SEM also reveal surface pores and voids below the image surface that may be a significant cause of image deterioration and loss over time.
Through this research initiative, Ralph Wiegandt, Senior Project Conservator at the George Eastman House has been able to dedicate his work to developing solutions for stopping further deterioration of daguerreotypes and preserve the collection. One such tool is an encasement that contains the gas argon, which they have found will not degrade the images like oxygen will. The cases also keep out harmful moisture and contaminants and each has a sensor that allows conservators to test for the presence of oxygen within the case.
While the research has not yet provided a solution for restoring already damaged daguerreotypes, it offers hope that the existing pieces will not further deteriorate.
History of Collaboration
The University of Rochester and George Eastman House share a common history through Kodak founder George Eastman -- who shared half his philanthropic fortune with the University, including establishing the River Campus, the Eastman School of Music, and the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Upon his death in 1932, he bequeathed his home to the University. Two presidents resided there, beginning with his close friend Rush Rhees, until 1947 when the University transferred the property to a board of trustees, which established a museum of photography. Since then the University and Eastman House have had a history of sharing collections followed by academic collaboration in the 1950s, which continue to the present day.
In 2010, the University of Rochester and George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, the world's preeminent museum of imaging, entered into an alliance to further public engagement, research, and education in the arts and sciences, with a focus on the museum's photography and motion-picture collections.

making daguerreotype / dagerrotípia készítés
Thank you cdags and daguerreotype community to help me to get until here. After lots of researching, nearly a year ago I started with Becquerel development, later vacuum mercury development, first just with iodine and now with bromine. This video shows how I made my first acceptable (not perfect) bromine sensitized vacuum mercury developed dag. I think this was an important milestone in my improvement in this process.
If you are new to the daguerreotype process, be really careful with the chemicals, always use fume hood and gas mask! I hope this video will help you how to make dags and help not to give up. (Start with Becquerel!)

Photo History of the people of Earth 1839 to 1853
The entire public domain photo records of all the known surviving photographs from the beginning in 1826 to development in 1839 through to 1853. Montaged into ten minutes with a background music of my own composition.
To watch this parade of faces of people from a different time is a moving experience and best viewed in silence. However most modern people find silent viewing uncomfortable so I have blended some vocal tones electronically into a form of Gregorian chant for those that require musical accompaniment.
The images begin with a photo print of a boy with a horse This was an experiment in photocopying to achieve chemical permanency.
Next is Niepces Famous Window scene from his Studio. followed by his partner Daguerre's well known images.
The ball starts rolling in 1839 with Robert Cornelius in his self portrait (the first Human ever on film) then a parade of photos from the first year 1840 showing mainly anonymous workers posing for up to ten minutes of stillness to catch an image. The face of Samuel Morse pops up a lot as he was one of the first brave celebrities to endure the process.Dickens Lincoln John Brown Darwin Verne and Rossini are all here at the dawn of the modern age.
Before this time for the Thousands of years of Humanity, No Photographs were ever made. We can only see the previous years through the interpretation of Artists. all historical people and events prior to photography were illusionary and inaccurate.
The materials used in the many photographic techniques were known to the Romans Greeks and Chinese but Like the equivalent invention of the Phonograph they were never utilised. Religious prohibition on the depiction of the human form may be why there are no earlier images.
