Maurice Harold Macmillan, 1st Earl of Stockton, OM, PC (10th February 1894 - 29th December 1986) was a British Conservative politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 10th January 1957 to 18th October 1963. Nicknamed 'Supermac' and known for his pragmatism, wit and unflappability, Macmillan achieved notoriety before the Second World War as a Tory radical and critic of appeasement. Rising to high office as a protegé of wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, he believed in the essential decency of the post-war settlement and the necessity of a mixed economy, and in his premiership pursued corporatist policies to develop the domestic market as the engine of growth. As a One Nation Tory of the Disraelian tradition, haunted by memories of the Great Depression, he championed a Keynesian strategy of public investment to maintain demand, winning a second term in 1959 on an electioneering budget. Benefiting from favourable international conditions, he presided over an age of affluence, marked by low unemployment and high if uneven growth. In his immortal Bedford speech of July 1957 he correctly told the nation they had 'never had it so good', but warned of the dangers of inflation, summing up the fragile prosperity of the 1950s. Macmillan was the sitting prime minister at the time; he departed Indiana to meet with President Eisenhower at the White House. This address was later cited by Tony Blair when he visited DePauw (the fifth British Prime Minister to do so) in March 2008.

In 1963, at the height of the Cold War, President John F. Kennedy and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan met at Birch Grove, Macmillan's country house in Sussex. The brief 24 hour visit is often overlooked by the history books, but their time together in the English countryside cemented their relationship and a unique Anglo-American friendship. Birch Grove acted as the stage for the talks between the two men, with all the comings and goings of an international Cold War summit. After just 24 hours Kennedy would leave England never to return.

In this "Saturday Live" sketch Peter Cook plays an old Conservative from the House of Lords, interviewed by John Bird in the autumn of his years. ("Nearly dead, yes.") Although not named directly, "Lord Stockton" was the former UK Prime Minister Harold MacMillan ( http://tinyurl.com/l4nyy ), which explains the "Macmillan Publishing" in-joke. And he was indeed "nearly dead", dying (at the ripe old age of 92) not long after this program was broadcast, although the two events are presumably unconnected. When MacMillan was Prime Minister, he became the first UK head of government to be impersonated in a satirical show. Indeed he turned up at a performance of the show, "Beyond the Fringe", specifically to see himself impersonated. The person doing this ground-breaking impersonation? Peter Cook.
