The Philippine Sea is a marginal sea east and north of the Philippines occupying an estimated surface area of 2 million mi² (5 million km²)^[1] on the western part of the North Pacific Ocean.^[2] It is bordered by the Philippine archipelago (Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao) on the southwest; Palau, Yap, and Ulithi (of the Carolines) on the southeast; the Marianas, including Guam, Saipan, and Tinian, on the east; the Bonin and Iwo Jima on the northeast; the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyūshū on the north; the Ryukyu Islands on the northwest; and Taiwan in the west.^[3]

The sea has a complex and diverse undersea relief.^[4] The floor is formed into a structural basin by a series of geologic faults and fracture zones. Island arcs, which are actually extended ridges protruding above the ocean surface due to plate tectonic activity in the area, enclose the Philippine Sea to the north, east and south. The Philippine archipelago, Ryukyu Islands, and the Marianas are examples. Another prominent feature of the Philippine Sea is the presence of deep sea trench, among them the Philippine Trench and the Mariana Trench, containing the deepest point on the planet.

The Philippine Sea is bordered by the Philippines and Taiwan to the west, Japan to the north, the Marianas to the east and Palau to the south. Adjacent seas include Celebes Sea which is separated by Mindanao and smaller islands to the south, South China Sea which is separated by Philippines, and East China Sea which is separated by the Ryukyu Islands.

The International Hydrographic Organization defines the Philippine Sea as "that area of the North Pacific Ocean off the Eastern coasts of the Philippine Islands", bounded as follows:^[5]

On the West. By the Eastern limits of the East Indian Archipelago, South China Sea and the Eastern China Sea.

On the North. By the Southeast coast of Kyushu, the Southern and Eastern limits of the Inland Sea and the South coast of Honshu Island.

On the East. By the ridge joining Japan to the Bonin, Volcano and Ladrone (Mariana) Islands, all these being included in the Philippine Sea.

On the South. By a line joining Guam, Yap, Pelew (Palau) and Halmahera Islands.

The Philippine Sea Plate forms the floor of this sea and it subducts under the Philippine Mobile Belt which carries most of the Philippine archipelago and eastern Taiwan. Between the two plates is the Philippine Trench.

The Philippine Sea hosts an exotic marine ecosystem. About five hundred species of hard and soft corals occur in the coastal waters and 20 per cent of the worldwide known shellfish species are found in Philippine waters. Sea turtles, sharks, moray eels, octopuses and sea snakes along with numerous species of fish such as tuna can commonly be observed. Additionally, the Philippine Sea serves as spawning ground for Japanese eel, tuna and different whale species.^[4]

The first European to navigate the Philippine Sea was Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, who named it Mar Filipinas when he and his men were in the Mariana Islands prior to the exploration of the Philippines. Later it was discovered by other Spanish explorers from 1522 to 1565 and the site of the famous galleon trade route.

Between June 19 and 20, 1944, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, a very large and decisive World War II naval battle between Japan and the United States, took place in the eastern Philippine Sea, near the Mariana Islands. The aircraft carriers Taihō, Shōkaku, Junyō, Hiyō and Ryuho are bombed, torpedoed and sank by American carrier-based planes and assaults from other naval vessels, this was also the site of the “Great Marianas Turkey Shoot” prior to the Allied conquests of Saipan, Guam and Tinian in the Marianas, Palau in the Southwest, and the Philippines.

Following an escalation of the Spratly Islands dispute in 2011, various Philippine government agencies started using the neologism "West Philippine Sea" to refer to the South China Sea. However, a Pagasa spokesperson said that the sea to the east of the Philippines will continue to be called the Philippine Sea.^[6]

Roilo Golez (born January 9, 1947) is a Philippine politician on his sixth term as Member of the Philippine House of Representatives representing the Second District of Parañaque City,^[1] one of the most industrialized districts of the Philippines. A veteran legislator, he was elected in 1992, 1995, 1998, 2004, 2007, and 2010 all by landslide victories and had served as Congressman for five terms: in the 9th Congress of the Philippines, 10th Congress of the Philippines, 11th Congress of the Philippines, 13th Congress of the Philippines and 14th Congress of the Philippines.^[2] He is now serving his sixth term as congressman in the 15th Congress of the Philippines.^[3]

Biography and career[link]

Roilo Golez was born on January 9, 1947 in the small town of Looc, Romblon in the Philippines. His parents were both public school teachers. He grew up in a low cost government housing project and is a product of public schools.^[4]

From rural Philippines, Golez rose to success in academics, sports, government, business, civic organizations and politics.^[5]

Roilo Golez went to the Philippine Military Academy and US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, major in Mathematics and Operations Analysis.^[4]

While at Annapolis, he distinguished himself in academics, leadership and sports. He was consistently in the Superintendent's Honor List. He was selected Company Commander, a high position in the Brigade of Midshipmen and was a Brigade Boxing Champion for four straight years, establishing a record as the first to achieve this feat since the Academy was established in 1845. So far, only fourteen midshipmen have won four brigade boxing championships in the Academy’s history.^[6]

After Annapolis, Golez took up Master in Business Administration (MBA) in the University of the Philippines where he graduated Valedictorian of his class.^[7]

Roilo Golez pursued a long career as a Public Servant^[8]:

• Three years as Postmaster General of the Philippines, where he received the prestigious Ten Outstanding Young Men Award (TOYM) for public service excellence.
• Three years as a member of the Philippine Cabinet, serving as National Security Adviser, overseeing the country's counterterrorism and national security program.
• Fifteen years as Congressman of the Republic of the Philippines. He has consistently received the award One of the Most Outstanding Congressmen of the Philippines,^[2] has a perfect 100% attendance record, no absence, in all the sessions of Congress since he became a congressman in 1992.^[9] He is now in his sixth term as Congressman ^[10] and won all his election victories by landslide, thus earning the title “Landslide King of Paranaque.” He has served as Chairman of the Committee on Public Order & Security, Chairman of the Committee on National Defense and as Deputy Minority Leader.^[11] Golez is also credited for concreting the most number of roads and constructing the most number of school buildings in the history of Parañaque City.
• Twenty years as Governor of the Philippine National Red Cross where he received the Bayani Red Cross Gold Medal Award for heroism and bravery in the face of gunfire while leading a Red Cross rescue team to rescue wounded soldiers during the bloody December 1989 coup attempt.
• One year as National President of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.^[5]
• Two years as Fund Campaign Chairman of the Philippine Cancer Society.
• Four years as Division Fund Campaign Chairman of the Philippine Tuberculosis Society.
• Two years as Chairman of the Elks Cerebral Palsy Project.^[5]
• Four years as Governor of the Management Association of the Philippines.
• Twenty eight years as a Rotarian of the Rotary Club of Manila.
• Two years as National President of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.
• Two years as President of the Philippine Olympic Academy.
• Five years as a member of the Board of Trustees of the St. Lukes Medical Center.
• Fourteen years as a Philippine Navy Officer, reaching the rank of Navy Captain (full colonel in the Army).
• Four years as Professor in the Master in Business Administration Program of the University of the Philippines.
