Leopold Stokowski conducts Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony (2nd mov) at Carnegie Hall, in 1947
Leo was a ROCKSTAR in the Forties. Originally English, he grew his hair into a long white mane and SPURNED the baton (and in doing so, created front-room conductors World-wide, who did likewise, to records!) He worked right up to his death, at 95. If the music sounds familiar - it was mined for the love theme from "Vanishing Point" and Paul Hogan's TV show theme.

Stokowski in 'The Big Broadcast of 1937'
Leopold Stokowski was appointed conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1912 and over the next couple of decades built it into one of the world's greatest. However, towards the end of the 1930s he decided to move on to other things and appeared in three Hollywood films, starting with his movie debut in 'The Big Broadcast of 1937.' This featured popular radio artists of the day and in Stokowski's sequence two of his Bach arrangements were played: 'Ein Feste Burg' and the 'Little Fugue' in G minor. Stokowski also starred in '100 Men and a Girl' with Deanna Durbin and conducted the music for Walt Disney's 'Fantasia.' Other 'Big Broadcast' movies featured such classical artists as Kirsten Flagstad and Richard Tauber. Stokowski's final film appearance was in 'Carnegie Hall' (1947) in which he conducted part of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony.
