A British newspaper editor has called for more protection for whistle blowers, while giving evidence at a European Parliament inquiry into alleged US spying.
Alan Rusbridger heads up the Guardian, which led on coverage of leaks made by former American intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.
"The combination of the use of punitive laws against whistle blowers and inappropriate legislation to silence the work of journalists. I think people in Western governments ought to think about what kind of signal they are sending to the rest of the world by this kind of behaviour," he said via a video link.
Earlier this year, British authorities held the partner of the Guardian journalist covering the leaks and reportedly threatened legal action against the newspaper.
"Journalists being harassed in a member state of the European Union. For reporting on a situation with an objective interest of the European public. Of the European ordinary citizens. I am appalled," said Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar, Chair of the European Parliament's Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee.

Guardian newspaper editor Alan Rusbridger accuses UK: Government forced us to destroy leak data
The Guardian newspapers editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger has said that he agreed to a "slightly pointless" task of destroying the computer hard drives containing the information given by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to allow for the continuation of the papers coverage of the revelations. His other option was to face legal action and surrender the material to UK courts.

Spilling the NSA's Secrets: Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger on the Inside Story of Snowden Leaks 1/3
http://www.democracynow.org - Three-and-a-half months after National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden came public on the the U.S. government's massive spying operations at home and abroad, we spend the hour with Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of The Guardian, the British newspaper that first reported on Snowden's leaked documents. The Guardian has continued releasing a series of exposés based on Snowden's leaks coloring in the details on how the NSA has managed to collect telephone records in bulk and information on nearly everything a user does on the Internet. The articles have ignited widespread debate about security agencies' covert activities, digital data protection and the nature of investigative journalism. The newspaper has been directly targeted as a result -- over the summer the British government forced the paper to destroy computer hard drives containing copies of Snowden's secret files, and later detained David Miranda, the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald. Rusbridger, editor of The Guardian for nearly two decades, joins us to tell the inside story of The Guardian's publication of the NSA leaks and the crackdown it's faced from its own government as a result.

Gagging Guardian: UK govt threatens newspaper over Snowden's leaks
This week, the British newspaper which spilled the beans on the NSA and was in turn forced to destroy materials provided by Edward Snowden, came clean on why it gave in to government pressure. The Guardian editor said London threatened legal action to stop the paper from reporting the sensitive leaks altogether, so they agreed to destroy the original data, which had nevertheless already been copied. RT's Tesa Arcilla reports.

Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger accuses British authorities of forcing him to destroy Snowden data
British authorities forced The Guardian newspaper to destroy material leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden, its editor has revealed. Alan Rusbridger called it a "pointless" move that would not prevent further reporting on US and British surveillance programmes. He said the "bizarre" episode a month ago and the detention at Heathrow airport on Sunday of the partner of a Guardian journalist showed press freedom was under threat in Britain.

British Newspaper Has Advantages in Battle With Government Over Secrets
The Guardian's global presence means that some of the tactics that might intimidate other British journalists have less effect on it.Alan Rusbridger, the mop-haired, soft-spoken editor of The Guardian newspaper, finds himself in a shadowy battle with the British government over purloined secrets that the government will have a hard time winning in the Internet age.
