Visit of Axum (Ethiopia)
Axum was the center of the marine trading power known as the Aksumite Kingdom, which predated the earliest mentions in Roman era writings. Around AD 356, its ruler was converted to Christianity by Frumentius. Later, under the reign of Kaleb, Axum was a quasi-ally of Byzantium against the Persian Empire. The historical record is unclear, primary sources limited mainly to ancient church records.
It is believed it began a long slow decline after the 7th century due partly to Islamic groups contesting trade routes. Eventually Aksum was cut off from its principal markets in Alexandria, Byzantium and Southern Europe and its trade share was captured by Arab traders of the era. The Kingdom of Aksum was finally destroyed by Gudit, and eventually the people of Aksum were forced south and their civilization declined. As the kingdom's power declined so did the influence of the city, which is believed to have lost population in the decline similar to Rome and other cities thrust away from the flow of world events. The last known (nominal) king to reign was crowned ca. 10th century, but the kingdom's influence and power ended long before that.
Its decline in population and trade then contributed to the shift of the power center of the Ethiopian Empire so that it moved further inland and bequeathed its alternative place name (Ethiopia) to the region, and eventually, the modern state

Axum or Aksum, አክሱም Ethiopia ኢትዮጵያ
Axum or Aksum is a city in northern Ethiopia which was the original capital of the eponymous kingdom of Axum. Axum was a naval and trading power that ruled the region from ca. 400 BC into the 10th century. The kingdom was also arbitrarily identified as Abyssinia, Ethiopia, and India in medieval writings.

Ethiopia-Axum
In the 3rd century, Axum (Aksum) began interfering in South Arabian affairs, controlling at times the western Tihama region among other areas. By the late 3rd century it had begun minting its own currency and was named by Mani as one of the four great powers of his time along with Persia, Rome, and China. It converted to Christianity in 325 or 328 under King Ezana and was the first state ever to use the image of the cross on its coins. At its height, Axsum controlled northern Ethiopia, Eritrea, northern Sudan, southern Egypt, Djibouti, Yemen, and southern Saudi Arabia, totalling 1.25 million km²

Axum and Lalibela
The kingdom of Axum had its own written language called Ge'ez, and also developed a distinctive architecture exemplified by giant obelisks, the oldest of which (though much smaller) date from 5,000-2,000 BC

Giant Stone Obelisk Re-Erected
CHEN:
Ethiopians are celebrating today after the return of an ancient monument is re-erected. The obelisk was stolen under the rule of Italian, Mussolini. Here's more on the story.
STORY:
Tens of thousands of Ethiopians cheered, as a 1,700-year-old giant stone obelisk was returned to where it once stood. The two slender carved columns were taken by Italian invaders in the 1930's.
U.N. engineers have helped install it to its original location in Axum. This ancient and holy city was once the centre of a powerful trading empire.
[Alfred Mantica, Italian Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs]:
"What we are witnessing here today in Axum is an extraordinary event from many points of view. Indeed we are witnessing not only the return to its homeland of the work of art of highly symbolic value but we are also having the privilege to live a moment which represents an historical turning point in the relations between Italy and Ethiopia."
During Italy's invasion in 1937, the 78-foot (24-metre), 160-tonne granite tower was stolen and had been placed in square in Rome by the Italian leader, Benito Mussolini.
The national treasure was returned to Ethiopia three years ago by the Italian government. However its return to the site at Axum was delayed, while scientists studied a newly found network of underground funeral chambers beneath the site.
[Meles Zenawi, Ethiopian Prime Minister]:
"I would like to express happiness on behalf of my own and the government of Ethiopia over the re-erection of the ancient Axum obelisk that was down for a long time before being taken to Italy in exile."
The Italian government paid some 10 million U.S. dollars in shipping and installation costs but the local people are ecstatic.

Axum 01 - Chatting It Up
Welcome to a brand new let's play with plenty of potential but I can only promise to mess it up.
In Crusader Kings 2, Axum is a duchy in africa, a place I have not seen anyone else play. We begin as a heretical faction of orthodoxy, and I'm not sure how we will be perceived. I guess that means the Byzantines will not like us... Them plus the Shia Caliphate, the Turks, etc... that's a lot of enemies on our doorstep!
