1. What is Jyutping 粵拼?
Developed by The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong (LSHK) in 1993, Jyutping 粵拼, sometimes spelled Jyutpin, is a romanization system for Cantonese. The formal name is The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong Cantonese Romanization Scheme. Jyutping 粵拼, literally means Cantonese spelling. For many Cantonese learners using computers, Jyutping is easier to use, and it's a great tool to learn Cantonese pronunciation.
2. Initials and Finals
The Cantonese sound or syllable of every Chinese character can usually be spelled with one initial and one final, pretty much like Pinyin for Mandarin.
Iniatials are consonants and finals can be simple vowels or compound with vowels plus ending consonants.
There are 19 initials and 56 finals in Jyutping
e.g. mother:妈 maa1
m is the initial aa is the final, a long vowel 1 is the tone number.
mountain/hill:山 saan1
s is the initial aan is a compound final, a vowel + consonant 1 is the tone number.
body:身 san1 新,伸, 申
s is the initial; an is a compound final, a vowel + consonant ; 1 is the tone number.
Some Cantonese syllable may contain only one final:
e.g. exclaination ending word:啊 aa3
love: 爱 oi3 or ngoi3
There are 19 initials and 56 finals in Jyutping
19 initials:
1 b 巴 班
2 p 怕 攀
3 m 媽 慢
4 f 花 饭
5 d 打 单
6 t 他 摊
7 n 那 难
8 l 啦 懒

Chinese idioms 180 - 各有所能 [THE END]
Traditional Chinese: 各有所能
Simplified Chinese: 各有所能
Pinyin: gè yǒu suǒ néng
Jyutping: go3 jau5 so2 nang4
Meaning:
各 = each, individually, every, all
有所 = somewhat / to some extent
能 = to be able; can, permitted to; ability
By here I want to announce the end of this little project of mine.
I started this project because of five reasons:
- I want to learn more about Chinese idioms.
- Promote the Cantonese language.
- It's an old but very educational and fun TV show, it's a shame to be forgotten.
- There are no complete panda idioms on youtube. And of the sporadic ones they are mixed with Cantonese and Mandarin audio.
- Help people study the idioms. I know there are a lot of American born Chinese, British born Chinese etc etc out there who wants to improve their Cantonese. (yeah yeah and other ethnicity).
In every episode there are, besides the meaning, extra information included like the pronunciation using Jyutping romanization system, Unihan definition of every character and/or compound, pinyin and occasionally added etymology. This will boost your confidence of the newly learned idiom.
A brief note on how I did this.
1. Copy the .DAT files from the VCD
2. Use the free program VirtualDub's audio filtering to remove the Mandarin channel.Compress in other audio and video formats.
3. Keeping record of the 180 files and naming it; there are no names from the files that I ripped from the VCD just numbers so I've had to go online and find the names and copy it. Furthermore there are 12 VCD's. Every VCD contains 16 files, 1 intro and 15 episodes per VCD.
4. For every episode fill in the template: Traditional Chinese - Simplified Chinese - Pinyin - Jyutping** - Cangjie (later dropped) - Literal meaning (occasionally) - Etymology (occasionally) - Meaning* - Character 1/2/3/4 definition or the compound definition.
5* For the meaning of the idioms I used:
- http://en.wiktionary.org/
- Couple ones I've found on blogs, babylon and some I've translated it myself.
** For the Jyutping converter I used http://hktv.cc/hp/cantonesetojyutping/
Please be aware that there are no perfect Jyutping converters. This is to give you a sense of direction. You will have to rely on the audio.
6. Upload the episodes on Youtube in batches (per upload 15 episodes). These steps (1-8) are done iteratively instead of like a waterfall method. I take all these steps for every 15 episodes and start again. Except step 3.
7. Edit the upload such as add taggs and description (the filled in template).
8. Double check the episode by watching it on youtube, check for errors and missing meanings of the idiom. If checked I'd press the like button.
It took me 8 months in total (with on and offs) to finish this project. I have learned a lot, and enjoy seeing people subscribing and see the count view of every episode rising.
Well, that's it. Time to go find my new, fun and challenging project!
Sincerely,
Cantonese Cultural Warrior 'HaamSapTjai'

Learn Cantonese Song - 林 憶 蓮 : 綠 水 清 風
My first video of this type. It is made to help you (and me) learn song lyrics, to fix both the characters and their pronunciation
The transcription system used here is called "jyutping", devised by the LSHK (Linguistic Society of Hong Kong)
This song by Sandy Lam is the Cantonese version of the Miyazaki Hayao movie "Kaze no Tani no Naushika - Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind"
With all my apologies for any mistakes
Original Lyrics :

With numerous skyscrapers and mountains located to the north and its only runway jutting out into Victoria Harbour, landings at the airport were dramatic to experience and technically demanding for pilots. The History Channel program Most Extreme Airports ranked it as the 6th most dangerous airport in the world.
The airport was home to Hong Kong's international carrier Cathay Pacific, as well as regional carrier Dragonair, freight airline Air Hong Kong and Hong Kong Airways. The airport was also home to the former RAF Kai Tak.

This is an animation video for the classic Andy Lau's song 一起走過的日子 ("The Days We Spent Together") in Cantonese with romanization pinyin for those who cannot read the language but would like to sing along nonetheless. :)
All video animations and the overall presentation were done by me. Static background image was obtained from the following website: http://www.portalgraphics.net/oc/en/pages/user/profile/profile.asp?user_id=4403 (apparently that link is down, try this: http://i.imgur.com/jWNiH.jpg)
