Transport Apartheid: 'Palestinian Only' buses spark segregation roar
There's a shadow of apartheid in Israel. Palestinians commuting from the West Bank are now urged to board special buses. They were launched this week by the Transport Ministry after some Jewish settlers feared their safety was at risk. Paula Slier reports on how the roots of the problem go deeper.

Israeli and Palestinian films compete at Oscars
Hollywood is getting ready to hand out the industry's most prestigious film awards: the Oscars.
Among the contenders for best documentary is a film directed by an Israeli, and another by a Palestinian.
Both the Israeli 'The Gatekeepers' and Palestinian 'Five Broken Cameras' tell the same story, but from two quite different perspectives.
Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports from the Occupied West Bank.

Palestinian Protest Turns Violent
We went to the West Bank on Nakba Day 2012 to survey the protests and avoid getting hit by stink trucks and rubber bullets.

Every year on May 15, Palestinians observe Nakba Day, or "Day of the Catastrophe." Falling just 24 hours after Israeli Independence Day, it's held to commemorate the exodus of Palestinians from what is now Israel, which occurred during the Arab-Israeli war.
As you can imagine, the occasion doesn't put the Palestinians in the mood for celebrations and frivolity. Instead, they gather to protest against the people who, in their eyes, have been occupying their land since Israel was created in 1948.

Gaza - Palestinian Gangnam Style
Translation of soundbite #1: MUHAMNAD BARAKAT, LEADER OF GANGNAM GAZA STYLE, SAYING: "A group of Palestinian young men are making this Gangnam Style video clip to highlight the hardship in Gaza. No one's done this before. We're hoping to focus on Gaza issues through this simple means."
Translation of soundbite #2: MUHANNAD BARAKAT, LEADER OF GROUP, SAYING:
"Our instruments are simple ones. We used a mobile phone camera to film the video. Also we were weak in editing and directing the video. Thank God we can send a message to the world through our mobile phones."
Translation of soundbite #3: WALID AFAGHANI, MEMBER OF BAND, SAYING: "The message is about our suffering, prisoners, unemployment, a lack of electricity, that causes us problems."
A group of Palestinians using mobile phones have created their own version of South Korean singer Psy's Internet dance video hit in the hope of highlighting their plight in a new and funny way.
Gangnam Gaza Style mimics the original and follows on from a wave of Gangnam YouTube copies that have propelled Psy to worldwide fame.
In this case the video has serious undertone.
"A group of Palestinian young men are making this Gangnam Style video clip to highlight the hardship in Gaza. No one's done this before. We're hoping to focus on Gaza issues through this simple means," group leader Muhamnad Barakat told Reuters Television, as the group rehearsed for another version of their act.
An earlier version already published on YouTube and attracting interest, entertains, but also takes a sideswipe at the hardship Gazans face, including unemployment and a lack of access to cash.
"The message is about our suffering, prisoners, unemployment, a lack of electricity that causes us problems," Walid Afaghani, another group member, added.
The group has been using a mobile phone to record video and has only just been able to upgrade to a small video camera.
"Our instruments are simple ones. We used a mobile phone camera to film the video. Also we were weak in editing, and directing the video. Thank God we can send a message to the world through our mobile phones," Barakat said.
Italian freelance journalist, Shantal, visiting the Gaza Strip, got to see the group perform. "It is funny, so you enjoy while you see it, but at the same time it gives a strong message," she said.
Gaza unemployment is estimated by the United Nations to be at more than 40 percent, and local economists put the figure at around 60 percent.
Israel imposed restrictions on trade to Gaza in 2001 following the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising and tightened them further in 2007 after Hamas seized power in the coastal enclave adjacent to Egypt, which also enforces a blockade.
Hamas won a Palestinian ballot in 2006, sitting in an uneasy alliance with its Western-backed rival Palestinian faction Fatah until they fought a brief Gaza civil war a year later.
Under Hamas rule since, Gaza has suffered an often grinding embargo by Israel, accompanied by widespread power blackouts for Gaza's 1.7 million inhabitants.
Life is not easy in Gaza, as the group of young men doing it 'Gaza style' point out.
While they clearly had fun with the project, they hope their message will reach a wide audience.

Israel and Palestine, an animated introduction.
Easy to understand, historically accurate http://jewishvoiceforpeace.org/ mini- primer about why Israelis and Palestinians are fighting, why the US-backed peace process has been an impediment to peace, and what you can do to make a difference. This conflict is essentially about land and human rights, not religion and culture. Endorsed by Palestinian, Israeli and American scholars and peace activists.

Israel Withholds $100 Million of Palestinian Money, Builds on E1
"Israel on Sunday roundly rejected the United Nations' endorsement of an independent state of Palestine, announcing it would withhold more than $100 million collected for the Palestinian government to pay debts to Israeli companies.
It was the second act of reprisal since the U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to support the Palestinians' statehood initiative. The following day, Israel announced it would start drawing up plans to build thousands of settlement homes, including the first-ever residential developments on a sensitive piece of land near Jerusalem. Actual construction would be years away.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the statehood campaign, led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, as "a gross violation of the agreements signed with the state of Israel."*
Israel has punished Palestine for being recognized as a state by the U.N. in different ways, including withholding $100 million in Palestinian tax revenues and building a settlement inside the West Bank on Bedouin farmer land. Is this the route to a peaceful solution? Cenk Uygur breaks down this story, as well as relations between the U.S., Israel, and the United Nations.

Israeli settlers take part of Palestinian city
Hundreds of Palestinians are preparing to demonstrate in Hebron, a city in the occupied West Bank, after Friday prayers.
The protest is against Israel's closure of one of the main roads in the city 12 years ago, which was done to only allow Israelis to settle there.
Protests calling on authorities to open the road that links Hebron with the nearby towns of the other nearby Palestinian towns are held on a weekly basis.

UNICEF condemns Israel over Palestinian children's rights violations
A damning report by UNICEF. Titled Children in Israeli military detention, it accuses Israel of gravely violating children basic rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
UNICEF says Israel violates the rights of Palestinian children from the moment they are arrested and it goes on through out the conviction and sentencing process. UNICEF's report had 38 specific recommendations for Israel to improve the protection of children in line with international laws.
The village of bet umar we're told has one of the highest rates of child arrests. The story of Zein a Palestinian child who spent 11 months in detention inside Israeli prisons seems to be a case in point for UNICEF's report which says that Israel's ill treatment of Palestinian children is widespread systematic and institutionalized. Zein was arrested in the middle of the night, was beaten at the time of his arrest and during the interrogation. He had no lawyer present and last but not least he was tried by a military court in the Ofer military prison. All in violation of the convention on the rights of the child which Israel is a signatory on.

The Palestinian girl against the super patient Israeli soldiers
I guess Israel is still a Zionist monster, isn't it?
Maybe Palestinians shouldn't bring their children to these restricted areas...or shall they teach them how to fight Israeli soldiers and kick them and curse them and wait until they'll be angry enough to punch them back... But the Israeli soldiers are much peaceful then they look alike, after all its Israel DEFENSE Force.
If the Palestinians will put down their weapons - there will be no war.
If Israel will put down their weapons - there will be no Israel.

This Isreal
A road trip straight through Israel. Had no idea what the complexities and diversity of the cultures were, but I got deeper and deeper, seeing all walks of life living together in this amazing land. The conglomerate of things happening in that tiny, but EPIC country (it's smaller than New Jersey!) packed a punch like a bustling beehive. I was overwhelmed and totally let Israel envelope me. I bonded with every flavor of person there... they were all Israeli. They were all beautiful people. (By the way, the title isn't spelled wrong, lol...read it again ;)

Noam Chomsky answers questions from Ken Loach, Paul Laverty, Alice Walker, Chris Hedges, John Berger and Amira Hass
Frank Barat asks Prof Noam Chomsky 6 questions that were sent by Alice Walker, John Berger, Ken Loach, Paul Laverty, Amira Hass and Chris Hedges.
Interview starts with question from John Berger:
Political practice often surprises political vocabulary. For example, the recent Revolution in the Middle East is said to demand Democracy. Can we find more adequate words?
Isn't the use of the old and frequently betrayed words a way of absorbing the shock, instead of welcoming it and transmitting it further?
05:20: Chris Hedges
Julien Benda in The Treason of Intellectuals argued that it is only when intellectuals are not in the pursuit of practical aims or material advantages that they can serve as a conscience and a corrective. Can you address the loss of philosophers, religious leaders, writers, journalists, artists and scholars whose lives were once lived in direct opposition to the realism of the multitudes and what this has meant for our intellectual and moral life?
11:51: Amira Hass
Have the uprisings in the arab states made you change, revise some of your past evaluations? Have they - and how - affected your notions of, for example :masses, hope, facebook, poverty, western intervention, surprise?
22:06: Ken Loach
How do we overcome sectariasnism on the left?
25:44: Paul Laverty
There has probably never been a time where there has been such concentration of wealth and power in so few hands. The powerful are sophisticated in maintaining this state of affairs, but perhaps we use this too as an excuse to hide our shortcomings on the left. What do you think has been lacking in our imaginative effort to build a mass international campaign to democratise resources, and challenge Corporate Power? Can you imagine a time where we can organise our lives and economies successfully on a co-operative basis, rather than a competitive one?
35:05: Alice Walker
I believe that a one state solution to the Palestine/Israel impasse is inevitable; and more just than a two state solution could ever be. This is because I don't believe Israel will ever give up trying to control Palestinians, whether citizens of Israel or those living in the occupied territories. Under a two state solution there would be Israel and a Palestinian bantustan.
I have been struck by your dismissal of the one state idea as something almost absurd, and would like to understand why you see it this way. Is there no hope that Israelis and Palestinians might live together as white and black people do, after the fall of apartheid, in South Africa?

Israeli settlers attack Palestinian village of Qusra
Armed Israeli settlers entered the Palestinian village of Qusra, South of Nablus, on Saturday afternoon and attacked homes of the villagers. The settlers threatening the local inhabitants at gunpoint, broke windows, and uprooted about 40 olive trees.
Other Palestinians of the village then went to protect the Hassan family from the settlers. The armed Israeli settlers shot 2 Palestinians; Hilmi Adbul Aziz and Khaled Nafed in the stomach and leg respectively. 7 other Palestinians sustained injuries from rubber-coated bullets and suffocation from tear gas canisters shot by Israeli forces.
This is the fourth Israeli attack on the village of Qusra in the past 7 days. Armed Israeli settlers torched 6 Palestinian cars in the village on Thursday, and Israeli forces demolished an electricity grid and poles on Wednesday. Both attacks led to clashes with Palestinian villagers.
Although Israeli settlers attacks on Qusra was quite common last year, experts fear that the attacks will be more violent in 2013, since settlers are now opening fire on Palestinians during their attacks.
