I was reading in my history book.
Before the seventh war,
They used to have a thing that they called love,
That we don't have any more.
I don't know the feeling
But I'm told it was an evil thing.
It used to make you crazy and fall down
No one knows what it could bring.
Love makes you crazy,
Love makes you cry.
Love made them crazy,
In days gone by.
Love makes you crazy,
That's what they say.
Love made them crazy,
In the olden days.
It must have seized the body and the mind
Like a strong disease.
Another plague that science has erased
Even from the memories.
Or maybe evolution wiped it out
So just the strong survive.
And no-one with that feeling could exist
In the race to stay alive.
Love makes you crazy,
Love makes you cry.
Love made them crazy,
In days gone by.
Love makes you crazy,
That's what they say.
Love made them crazy,
In the olden days.
Love makes you crazy,
Love makes you cry.
Love made them crazy,
In days gone by.
Love makes you crazy,
That's what they say.
Love made them crazy,
In the olden days.
We can't survive any more with this notion,
Just save it up to buy a ball and chain.
It seems it's all arranged.
You can't buy time and you can't buy emotions.
What have you and I
Been waiting for?
The Winds Of Change are blowing hard in our direction,
We can't go back and we can't stand still.
The Winds Of Change they try to blow away my affection,
But they never will.
They say in your life there's a tide for the taking.
And if you wait, they say it goes away.
It just flows away.
I know it may be a mistake we are making,
But if we don't try,
We'll never know.
The Winds Of Change are blowing hard in our direction,
We can't go back and we can't stand still.
The Winds Of Change they try to blow away my affection,
But they never will.
The Winds Of Change are blowing hard in our direction,
We can't go back and we can't stand still.
The Winds Of Change they try to blow away my affection,
But they never will.
I've spend some heavy nights like every sailor,
And I know some seedy ways to spend my pay.
I've been arrested in the streets
I've been drunk along the beaches of Marseille
And you know that when I left, I said I loved you,
But you think I've got a girl in every town.
When the hidden harbour whores whisper softly from their doors,
I turned them down.
Mona would you help me to unload my contraband,
I've been saving it for you.
I've ignored the crimson daughters on the quays of Amsterdam,
It's not an easy thing to do.
I keep away from the girls in San Francisco,
As I know my self-control won't last for long.
And a man can lose his head
With a little help from the hookers of Hong Kong.
And as I sail across these endless oceans,
I think of you each mile along the way.
And I tell myself this boat I am sailing on
Will bring me back one day.
Mona would you help me to unload my contraband,
I've been saving it for you.
I've ignored the crimson daughters on the quays of Amsterdam,
It's not an easy thing to do.
Mona would you help me to unload my contraband,
I've been saving it for you.
I've ignored the crimson daughters on the quays of Amsterdam,
It's not an easy thing to do.
(Baker)
It seems to me, Since we landed in this lonely place,
That the sun now shines of its own volition,
And this crazy mission isn't just a wild goose chase;
We sailed for years
Till we found ourselves upon a beach,
Gaining on this beast from the realms of fiction,
I've a strong conviction it's a thing we soon may reach.
"The Baker is shouting!" the Bellman said.
"He is shouting like mad, only hark!
He is waving his hands, he is wagging his head,
He has certainly found a Snark!"
Erect and sublime, for one moment in time,
In the next the wild figure they saw
(As if stung by a spasm) plunge into a chasm
While they waited, and listened in awe.
"It's a Snark!" was the sound that first came to their ears,
And it seemed almost too good to be true.
Then followed a torrent of laughter and cheers;
Then the ominous words: `It's a Boo-'
They hunted till darkness came on, but they found
Not a button, or feather, or mark,
By which they could tell that they stood on the ground
Where the Baker had met with the Snark.
In the midst of the word he was trying to say,
In the midst of his laughter and glee,
He had softly and suddenly vanished away-
For the Snark was a Boojum you see.
(Hope)
Don't let the memory die,
Children of the Sky, heroes of the sea,
And as your life passes by,
Remember how it feels to be
Children of the Sky.
(All)
Don't let the memory die,
Children of the Sky, heroes of the sea,
And as your life passes by,
Remember how it feels to be
Children of the Sky.
Then the Banker endorsed a blank cheque (which he crossed),
And changed his loose silver for notes.
The Baker with care combed his whiskers and hair,
And shook the dust out of his coats.
The maker of Bonnets ferociously planned
A novel arrangement of bows;
While the Billiard-marker with quivering hand
Was chalking the tip of his nose.
(Billiard Marker)
It's only a game, so
Put up a real good fight,
I'm gonna be snookering you tonight.
I'm famed for my aim, so
Y'better believe I'm right,
I'm gonna be snookering you,
Snookering you tonight!
I could spend days
Gazing across the balze at you,
You'll never win
When I begin
My break of fifty-eight
(or maybe more, who can be sure?)
To say it's a frame-up
Wouldn't be fair or right,
I'm gonna be snookering you tonight.
Resist me in vain, but
Victory's in my sight,
I'm gonna be snookering you,
Snookering you tonight!
Love is a game
Snooker's the same so join the queue,
Ged a good grip
Don't let it slip
And think about the pink
(Don't let a red go to your head!)
It's only a game, so
Put up a real good fight,
I'm gonna be snookering you,
Snookering you tonight!
To say it's a frame-up
Wouldn't be fair or right,
I'm gonna be snookering you,
Snookering you tonight!
Love is a game
Snooker's the same so join the queue,
Ged a good grip
Don't let it slip
And think about the pink
(Don't let a red go to your head!)
It's only a game, so
Put up a real good fight,
I'm gonna be snookering you,
Snookering you tonight!
Snookering you, snookering you tonight!
Snookering you, snookering you tonight!
He dreamed that he stood in a shadowy Court,
Where the Snark, with a glass in his eye,
Dressed in gown, bands, and wig, was defendig a pig
On a charge of deserting its sty.
(Barrister)
I dreamed last night I was standing in a court of Law,
And the Snark was the Counsel for Defence,
He was trying to establish the innocence,
Of a pig that I clearly saw,
As stated hereinbefore
In a Court of Law.
And while I was standing in a Court of Law,
The jury talked so they missed a lot,
And some were listening and some were not,
So the judge cried, "I implore,
Bring it down to a deafening roar,
In this Court of Law".
(Barrister Jury)
Let's teach it a lesson it'll never forget
For a devious deed it will live to regret,
It's clear that the pig must die.
We're of the opinion the pig must pay,
We can't let it live for another day,
We fear if the rules apply,
It's clear that the pig must die.
(Barrister)
The Snark replied, "I beg you my learned friends,
For it seems to me with the naked eye
That the pig can live or the pig can die,
And its happiness all depends
On the mercy that now extends
From my learned friends."
(Jury)
Let's teach it a lesson it'll never forget
For a devious deed it will live to regret,
It's clear that the pig must die.
(Barrister Jury)
We're of the opinion the pig must pay,
We can't let it live for another day,
We fear if the rules apply,
It's clear that the pig must die.
Let's teach it a lesson it'll never forget
For a devious deed it will live to regret,
It's clear that the pig must die.
We're of the opinion the pig must pay,
We can't let it live for another day,
We fear if the rules apply,
It's clear that the pig must die.
Then the snark pronounced sentence, the Judge being quite
Too nervous to utter a word;
When it rose to its feet, there was silence like night
And the fall of pin might be heard.
(Barrister)
Let's teach it a lesson it'll never forget
For a devious deed it will live to regret,
It's clear that the pig must die.
(Barrister Jury)
We're of the opinion the pig must pay,
We can't let it live for another day,
We fear if the rules apply,
It's clear that the pig must die.
But their wild exultation was suddenly checked
When the jailer informed them with tears
Such a sentence would have not the slightest effect,
As the pig had been dead for some years.
(Beaver)
It seems to me,
We have landed in a lonely place
Where the sun won't shine of its own volition,
And this crazy mission
May just be a wild goose chase.
We've sailed for years,
And we find ourselves upon this beach
Searching for some beast from the realms of fiction,
It's a wild addiction for something we'll never reach.
(Bellman Crew)
Pay no heed to the faint of heart!
Don't let these words of weakness fool you...
Ignore these words of dismay,
Don't let the chance slip away
This is the time to be strong!
The chips are down, the hunt is on!
(Guitar section and Main Theme)
There was one who was famed for the number of things
He forgot when he entered the ship:
His umbrella, his watch, all his jewels and ring,
And the clothes he had bought for the trip.
He had forty-two boxes all carefully packed,
With his name painted clearly on each;
But, since he omitted to mention the fact,
They were all left behind on the beach.
He came as a Baker; but owned, when too late -
And it drove the poor Bellman half mad -
He could only bake Bridecake - for which I may state,
No materials were to be had.
(Baker)
I came as the Baker on this escapade,
I knead the dough, but I can't look after the bread,
The Banker does it instead,
And although I never feel afraid,
Somehow I know
It could be the single worst mistake I've ever made,
To come as the Baker on this escapade.
(Butcher)
I came as the Butcher on this escapade,
Without the heart for moving in for the kill,
It makes me want to be ill,
But my orders have to be obeyed;
Though I take part,
I'm not the one on whom the blame should all be laid,
I'm only the Butcher on this escapade.
He came as a Butcher: but gravely declared,
When the ship had been sailing a week;
He could only kill Beavers. The Bellman looked scared,
And was almost too freightened to speak.
But at length he explained, in a tremulous tone,
There was only one Beaver on board;
And that was a tame one he had of his own,
Whose death would be deeply deplored.
(Beaver)
I came as the Beaver on this escapade,
Though I must say, I'm only here for the fun,
An optimist on the run,
I'm not lost, I've only been mislaid,
I know one day
I'll find the sun, though now I'm walking in the shade,
I'm only the Beaver on this escapade.
(Main Theme)
They roused him with muffins - they roused him with ice -
They roused him with mustard and cress -
They roused him with jam and judicous advice -
They set him conundrums to guess.
When at length he sat up and was able to speak
His sad story he offered to tell;
And the Bellman cried "Silence! Not even a shriek!"
And excitedly tingled his bell.
"I skip forty years," said the Baker, in tears,
"And proceed without further remark
To the day when you took me aboard of your ship
To help you in hunting the Snark.
"A dear uncle of mine (after whom I was named)
Remarked, when I bade him farewell -"
"Ok, skip your dear uncle!" the Bellman exclaimed,
As he angrily tingled his bell.
"He remarked to me then," said that mildest of men,
"If your Snark be a Snark, that is right:
Fetch it home by all means - you may serve it with greens,
And it's handy for striking a light.
"But oh, beamish nephew, beware of the day,
If your Snark be a Boojum! For then
You will softly and suddenly vanish away,
And never be met with again!"
Friends, Romans and countrymen!
Please lend me your ears,
And I will carefully impart what you may have thought for years,
But were too scared to ask,
By day or after dark;
In the Hunting of the Snark!
The emotional occasion brings the moisture to my eyes
As I rise to remark
That I think we may be gaining on the Snark.
I'm of notorial persuasion that I hear its distant cries.
And they're never far away,
(Crew and Bellman)
(No they're never far away)
(Bellman)
So I rise to remark
That I think we may be gaining on the Snark.
Friends, Romans and countrymen!
Please lend me your ears,
And I will carefully impart what you may have thought for years,
But were too scared to ask,
By day or after dark;
In the Hunting of the Snark!
(Crew)
The Hunting of the Snark, The Hunting of the Snark...
( Bellman)
In the Hunting of the Snark!
From my own investigations and the bearings on the chart,
In my heart I can see
A potential Snark may lurk in every tree.
As I make these observations I suggest that we should start,
For we haven't any time to spare
(No we haven't any time to spare)
In your hearts you'll agree,
A potential Snark may lurk in every tree!
Friends, Romans and countrymen!
Please lend me your ears,
And I will carefully impart what you may have thought
for years,
But were too scared to ask,
By day or after dark;
In the Hunting of the Snark!
(Crew)
The Hunting of the Snark, The Hunting of the Snark...
( Bellman)
In the Hunting of the Snark!
They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care;
They pursued it with forks and hope;
They threatened its life with a railway-share;
They charmed it with smiles and soap.
Then the Butcher contrived an ingenious plan
For making a separate sally;
And had fixed on a spot unfrequent by man,
A dismal and desolate valley.
(Butcher)
In the valley, where the shady people roam,
I was walking in the dark,
When I realized that I was not alone.
(Beaver)
In the valley, all those miles away from home,
I was hunting for the Snark,
When I realized I was not alone.
But the valley grew narrow and narrower still,
And the evening grew darker and colder,
Till (merely from nervousness, not from goodwill)
They marched along shoulder to shoulder.
Then a scream, shrill and high, rent the shuddering sky,
And they knew that some danger was near:
The Beaver turned pale to the tip of its tale,
And even the Butcher felt queer.
"'Tis the voice of the Jubjub!' he suddenly cried.
(This man, that they used to call "Dunce.")
"As the Bellman would tell you," he added with pride,
"I have uttered that sentiment once."
"'Tis the note of the Jubjub! Keep count, I entreat.
You will find I have told it you twice.
'Tis the song of the Jubjub! The proof is complete,
If only I've stated it thrice."
The Beaver had counted with scrupulous care,
Attending to every word:
But it fairly lost heart, and outgrabe in despair,
When the third repetition occurred.
The Beaver confessed, with affectionate looks
More eloquent even than tears,
It had learned in ten minutes far more than all books
Would have taught it in seventy years.
Such friends, as the Beaver and Butcher became,
Have seldom if ever been known;
In winter or summer 'twas always the same-
You could never find either alone.
And when quarrels arose- as one frequently finds
Quarrels will spite of every endeavour-
The song of the Jubjub recurred to their minds,
And cemented their friendship for ever!
(Butcher Beaver)
Oh it's hard to believe we could end up friends,
By a delicate combination
(Butcher)
Of fear of the dark,
(Beaver)
Belief in the Snark,
(Both)
And intelligent conversation.
Who would have guessed on this windswept night,
We would balance the whole equation?
(Butcher)
Who would have forseen, friendship between,
(Beaver)
Female Beaver
(Butcher)
And male caucasian?
(Baker)
Sing your hymns of Evensong,
Sail out to far lagoons,
All you fishermen and you fortune hunters,
Sharpen your harpoons.
Sing rhapsodies to the fickle gods that guide you,
Awake the brave adventurer that sleeps inside you.
(Baker, Boots Crew)
Before you vanish away like midnight smoke,
So that no signs or memories remain,
You might vanish away like midnight smoke,
And never be seen again.
(Baker)
You sailors, sail your stormy seas;
You gamblers, roll your ball.
All you butterflies and you ballerinas,
Dance until you fall.
Dream and believe; follow what you're searching for,
One day the brave adventurer will be no more.
(Baker, Boots Crew)
You just vanish away like midnight smoke,
So that no signs or memories remain,
You'll just vanish away like midnight smoke,
And never be seen again.
(Instrumental Break)
(Baker, Boots Crew)
You just vanish away like midnight smoke,
So that no signs or memories remain,
You'll just vanish away like midnight smoke,
And never be seen again.
"I engage with the Snark - every night after dark -
In a dream delirious fight:
I serve it with greens in those shadowy scenes,
And I use it for striking a light.
"But if ever I meet with a Boojum, that day,
In a moment (of this I am sure),
I shall softly and suddenly vanish away -
And the notion I cannot endure!
"'Tis a pitiful tale," said the Bellman, whose face
Had grown longer at every word;
"But, now that you've stated the whole of your case,
More debate would be simply absurd."
"The rest of my speech" (he explained to his men)
"You shall hear when I've leisure to speak it.
But the snark is at hand, let me tell you again!
'Tis your glorious duty to seek it!"
"To seek it with thimbles, to seek it with care;
To pursue it with forks and hope;
To threaten its life with a railway-share;
To charm it with smiles and soap!"
"For the Snark's a peculiar creature, that won't
Be caught in a commonplace way.
Do all that you know, and try all that you don't;
Not a chance must be wasted to-day!"
(Beaver)
Forget the risks we are taking
Let it rain, let it hail, let it snow;
We could be wrong all along
But at least if we keep on we soon will know,
Although:
We could be dancing towards disaster
With every movement we make,
We could be dancing to disaster,
We could fall with every step we take.
We could be dancing towards disaster,
With every thrill that we share,
We could be dancing to disaster
But I get the feeling we don't care.
There is no time left for wasting
Looking back round the corners we've turned.
Don't count the cost or we're lost,
For the bridges we have crossed have all been burned,
And we've learned:
We could be dancing towards disaster
With every movement we make,
We could be dancing to disaster,
We could fall with every step we take.
We could be dancing towards disaster,
With every thrill that we share,
We could be dancing to disaster
But I get the feeling we don't care.
(Beaver Crew)
Dancing, dancing,
For all we know we're dancing to disaster.
Dancing, dancing
Dancing to disaster.
Dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing,
Dancing to disaster.
We could be dancing towards disaster
With every movement we make,
We could be dancing to disaster,
We could fall with every step we take.
We could be dancing towards disaster,
With every thrill that we share,
We could be dancing to disaster
But I get the feeling we don't care.
We don't care.
We don't care.
(Boots)
Out in the deserts of darkness and dreams,
Out though the oceans of sadness we sailed.
Venturing onwards through mystical scenes,
Blown on the whim of the wind that prevailed.
We had no reason to doubt the truth,
Driven by danger and discontent,
And the drums of youth.
Don't let the memory die,
Childen of the sky, heroes of the sea.
And as your life passes by,
Remember how it feels to be
Children Of The Sky
Searching on mountains of wisdom and fears,
Searching in forests of feathers and snow.
Travelling through valleys of secrets and tears,
Where only the brave or the foolish would go.
Watching for signs in an empty sky,
We never thought that the rain would fall,
As the years went by.
Don't let the memory die,
Childen of the sky, heroes of the sea.
And as your life passes by,
Remember how it feels to be
Children Of The Sky
(Instrumental Section)
Don't let the memory die,
Childen of the sky, heroes of the sea.
And as your life passes by,
Remember how it feels to be
Children Of The Sky
"Just the place for a Snark!" the Bellman cried
As he landed his crew with care;
Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.
The Bellman himself they all praised to the skies -
Such a carriage, such ease and such grace!
Such solemnity, too! One could see he was wise,
The moment one looked in his face!
But the danger was past - they had landed at last,
With their boxes, portmanteaus, and bags:
Yet at first sight the crew were not pleased with the view,
Which consisted of chasms and crags.
He served out some grog with a liberal hand,
And bade them sit down on the beach:
And they could not but own that their Captain looked grand,
As he stood and delivered his speech.
(Butcher)
I must have known that it existed but I couldn't quite conceive it,
I was always the loser in affairs of the heart,
Well, you know how when you find something that you want, you don't believe it,
No you can't quite believe it when the good times start.
I used to think of love as just a dream that dissapears,
But you've taught me more tonight than I have learned in all those years.
As long as the moon can keep on shining,
And the sun keeps hanging in the sky,
No-one can take what flows between us,
No-one alive.
As long as the moon can keep on shining,
And the years keep rolling slowly by,
You'll be a friend of mine,
As long as the moon can shine.
Some people search for people, and some people search for freedom,
And some search for nothing but the thrill of the chase;
Well you know sometimes you search for things just to find that you don't need
them,
Or you search for the right things in the wrong kind of place.
I used to think of love as just a promise people make,
Or a game that people play, or just a risk that people take.
As long as the moon can keep on shining,
And the sun keeps hanging in the sky,
No-one can take what flows between us,
No-one alive.
As long as the moon can keep on shining,
And the years keep rolling slowly by,
You'll be a friend of mine,
As long as the moon can shine.
As long as the moon can shine.
They returned hand in hand, and the Bellman, unmanned
(For a moment) with noble emotion,
Said "This amply repays all the wearisome days
We have spent on the billowy ocean!"
Baby, do you understand me now,
Sometimes I feel a little mad.
But, don't you know that no one alive can always be an angel.
When things go wrong I feel real bad.
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good,
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood.
Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree,
With a joy that's hard to hide.
And sometimes it seems that, all I have to do is worry
And then you're bound to see my other side.
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good,
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood.
Baby, do you understand me now,
Sometimes I feel a little mad.
But, don't you know that no one alive can always be an angel.
When things go wrong I feel real bad.
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good,
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood.
I'm just a soul whose intentions are good,
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood.
"With the eyes of a fool", he said,
"You see the state you're in,
And still you stumble through your stupid life,
Still you laugh and grin;
Vagabond on a winding road
That only leads you down,
Blind to the dangers and dismay
That wipe the innocent smile away
From the face of a laughing clown."
Imbecile, you are acting like a fool again,
In a world of thieves all ready to run you down,
Imbecile, they are waiting till you make the first mistake,
And you're going to make it,
That's why I'll always call you an Imbecile.
"You weren't always a sorcerer,"
The Joker then replied,
"It seems to me you learned it on the way,
You lived by tricks and lies;
Standing around in your juggler's gown,
There seems no reason why;
Flashing your eyes and casting spells
With candles and signs and magic bells,
Oh, you are the fool, not I."
Imbecile, you can call me that if you feel the need,
But life is short and I am living it while I can.
If it rains, I'll get wet but in the sunshine I'll be dry,
It is you who are foolish,
Just 'cause I laugh don't call me an Imbecile.
"We both are right" said the sorcerer,
"And both of us are wrong,
For though we walk this road we don't know where it leads,
We only know it's long.
You have something to learn from me,
And I can learn from you;
You with your jokes and simple plans
And me with my tricks and sleight of hands,
Together we could get through."
Imbecile, we are dancing down a darkened road,
Though the stars are out, not one of us knows the way
Imbeciles up ahead of us and millions more behind,
And we're laughing and smiling,
The sun is only shining like it always does,
But I never noticed it in the sky before.
And you don't need to worry, 'cause I need your love, my friend.
There's a strong kind of feeling when I know you're near
Nobody alive can take it away from me;
And I feel like I've known you for a thousand years
Bring it out into the light.
'Cause I think I'm gonna write it on the walls of the world,
So everyone will know today the love I hold for you.
I will write it on the walls of the world,
So that the sun won't fade away the words I say to you,
I love you
And I know I'm not a loser when I'm on my own,
I could be miles away in another land,
And it keeps me together when I'm far from home,
I won't keep it out of sight.
And I think I'm gonna write it on the walls of the world,
So everyone will know today the love I hold for you
I will write it on the walls of the world
So that the sun won't fade away the words I say to you,
I love you
Strange and strong;
Bad dreams of burning love gone wrong.
Driven by desire --
Fight fire with fire, blade with blade,
And curse the games that once you played
Between the sheets,
Where you made your big mistake...
So lie awake, my darling, lie awake,
You know you'll never escape
The Ring of Scorpio.
Brave and tall,
The one we never thought could fall,
Beaten and betrayed;
The deals you made in foreign lands,
Smile on your face, blood on your hands;
You've had it all,
There's no more trust for you to break...
So lie awake, my darling, lie awake,
You know you'll never escape
The Ring of Scorpio.
You know you never can break
The Ring of Scorpio.
(Instrumental section)
So lie awake, my darling, lie awake,
You know you'll never escape
The Ring of Scorpio.
You know you never can break
The Ring of Scorpio.
Avenging angels or devils in disguise,
To each the same applies,
All strangers are Russian spies to the Lion of Kandahar.
All promises and words of love are lies,
There is no compromise,
Seen through the eyes of the Lion of Kandahar.
(Instrumental section)
Resist, delay, deny;
They will not break you now, though still they try.
One day they may understand,
This is the way God planned it.
Avenging angels or devils in disguise,
To each the same applies,
All strangers are Russian spies to the Lion of Kandahar.
All promises and words of love are lies,
There is no compromise,
Seen through the eyes of the Lion of Kandahar.
Old man, three times my age,
But still you cry like me with tears of rage.
The loving heart learns to hate,
No words can compensate now.
Avenging angels or devils in disguise,
To each the same applies,
All strangers are Russian spies to the Lion of Kandahar.
All promises and words of love are lies,
There is no compromise,
Seen through the eyes of the Lion of Kandahar.

The early light is breaking
The morning sun is waiting in the sky
And I think I'm gonna break away
And follow where the birds of freedom fly
I need you give
I need to live
For the world is slowly turning
And the light of love are burning
In my eyes
Caravans
Oh, my soul is on the run
Overland
I am flying
Caravans
moving out into the sun
Oh, I don't know where I'm going
But I'm going
Caravans
Oh, my soul is on the run
Overland
I am flying
Caravans
moving out into the sun
Oh, I don't know where I'm going
But I'm going
The rain that beat down on the roof last night,
Was falling loud and strong,
But that ain't why I couldn't sleep.
My lies were fighting with the truth last night,
I've lied for far too long,
I think the time has come to speak,
The time has come to speak.
'Cause Baby I can't lie no more,
Though I know it causes you pain that I can't mend,
Last night I said I loved you but I lied to you again,
Oh, Baby I can't lie no more,
And Baby don't you cry no more,
Don't forget the time when our love was deep and wide,
I always will remember how it was before it died.
Oh, Baby I can't lie no more.
Though there is sadness in your weary face,
We used to laugh a lot,
And I hate to see it end.
I know the world can be a lonely place
When the laughing has to stop,
I won't fall in love again,
I won't fall in love again.
Oh, Baby I can't lie no more.
My eyes are open,
My feet are off the ground.
My ears are aching,
My head is full of sounds.
It's no joke
When you're floating in the night
That starts at the left and continues to the right;
Begins at the back and continues to the front;
Starts at the bottom and continues to the top;
All I can hear is Voices in the Dark,
I can get to sleep at night no more.
All I can hear is Voices in the Dark,
I can get to sleep at night no more
My hands are shaking,
I can't put out the light.
So tired of waiting,
Can't sleep at all tonight.
It's no joke
When you're floating in the night
That starts at the left and continues to the right;
Begins at the back and continues to the front;
Starts at the bottom and continues to the top;
All I can hear is Voices in the Dark,
I can get to sleep at night no more.
All I can hear is Voices in the Dark,
I can get to sleep at night no more
We rode in the morning,
Casablanca to the west.
On the Atlas mountain foothills leading down to Marakesh.
For Mohammed and Marocco
We had taken up our guns
For the ashes of our fathers and the children of our sons.
For the ashes of our fathers and the children of our sons.
In the dry winds of summer
We were sharpening the blades.
We were riding to act upon the promise we had made.
With the fist and the dagger,
with the rifle and and the lance,
We will suffer no intrusion from the infidels of France.
We will suffer no intrusion from the infidels of France.
We could wait no more,
In the burning sands on the ride to Agadir.
Like the dogs of war,
For the future of this land on the ride to Agadir.
Though they were waiting,
And they were fifty to our ten,
They were easily outnumbered by a smaller force of men.
As the darkness was falling
They were soon to realize,
We were going to relive upon their godforsaken lives.
We were going to relive upon their godforsaken lives.
We could wait no more,
In the burning sands on the ride to Agadir.
Like the dogs of war,
For the future of this land on the ride to Agadir.
We rode in the morning,
Casablanca to the west.
On the Atlas mountain foothills leading down to Marakesh.
For Mohammed and Marocco
We had taken up our guns,
For the edges of our fathers and the children of our sons.
For the edges of our fathers and the children of our sons.
We went to the room and we bolted the door,
The bass from the jukebox was coming through the floor,
And out through the walls we could still hear the roar of the trains.
Was this all the comfort we got for our sins?
No candles, no waiters, no soft violins?
A dirty electric convector plugged into the mains.
I had wanted much more for the first night with you,
But the railway hotel was the best I could do.
I knew the Savoy would have suited you well,
But the best I could do was the railway hotel.
Away in the sky were the lights ot a jet,
Burning in the night like a slow cigarette.
The lamp in the street threw a soft silhouette on the wall.
And though it was crumbling and rundown and dead
A chair and a sink and an old single bed,
The love we began and the things that we said, I recall.
I had wanted much more for the first night with you,
But the railway hotel was the best I couid do.
I knew the Savoy would have suited you well,
But the best I couid do was the railway hotel
Don't ask me why I did it,
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
There were no other amusements or games to play
To pass the night away.
Don't ask me why I did it
I must have been lonely stupid or blind,
But I know that it seemed like a good idea at the time.
It was 3 a.m. in the casino
I was feeling like the Sportsman of the Year
So I blew a little money on the roulette wheel,
And I taught myself to play Chemin de fer
Don't ask me why I did it,
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
There were no other amusements or games to play
To pass the night away.
Don't ask me why I did it
I must have been lonely stupid or blind,
But I know that it seemed like a good idea at the hme
As the dawn came round on Monte Carlo,
I had lost the car and safe deposit keys,
The country house in Switzerland was mine no more,
And the gendarme at the door sald "c'est la vie!"
Don't ask me why I did it,
I must have been lonely stupid or blind,
But I know that it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Your time has come. Insh'allah,
Your song is sung Insh'allah.
Though you may think it easy
To laugh in my eyes,
Your time has come, Insh'allah.
There was no sound but the rhythm of your breathing,
No sound at all on that lonely night.
And never in my life have i believed it more than then,
That people live again,
But when i die, let it be in your arms.
There were no words, just a silent understanding,
No words could say what we always knew,
And i don't want to go, but i believe that when i do,
I will be with you,
And when i die, let it be in your arms.
I was there when the cold wind cut you like a knife
As you walked with me on the high hills of my life.
There was no sound but the rhythm of your breathing,
No sound at all on that lonely night.
And never in my life have i believed it more than then,
That people live again,
But when i die, let it be in your arms.
There are no answers,
There is no guide,
We are like sailors, blown on the tide.
Eyes in the shadows,
Faces in dreams,
Love if you're lucky to know what it means, but
Don't trust the Angels
You meet along the way,
Who make it clear that Heaven's here
And everything will be ok.
Just trust the Angels
Who tell you in the night
There's Hell on Earth
But it's worth the fight.
Hiding from Heaven,
Down in the dirt,
I am a soldier,
Born to be hurt.
Cries in the silence,
Lies in the dark,
I Will forever hold you in my heart,
So...
Don't trust the Angels
You meet along the way,
Who make it clear that Heaven's here
And everything will be ok.
Just trust the Angels
Who tell you in the night
There's Hell on Earth
But it's worth the fight.
(Instrumental solo)
Don't trust the Angels
You meet along the way,
Who make it clear that Heaven's here
And everything will be ok.
Just trust the Angels
Who tell you in the night
There's Hell on Earth
But it's worth the fight.
Don't trust the Angels

Rolling
With the tide
Amy floats downstream;
Now she
Dreams of me
Amen
Bad men
Over there
Shot my daddy down.
Nothing
I could do
Amen
Hey,
Everybody
Look away from the screen
Look away while Amy floats downstream
Hey,
Everybody
Look away from the screen
Look away while Amy floats downstream
After
Nights of fear
Georgie went away,
Ooh, it's
Lonely now,
Amen
Rolling
With the tide
Amy floats downstream;
Now she
Dreams of me
Amen
Hey,
Everybody
Look away from the screen
Look away while Amy floats downstream
Hey,
Everybody
Look away from the screen
Look away while Amy floats downstream
Everywhere you go
Nobody wants to know, or
Gives a damn
Looking
Away, pretending
Not to see,
Darling...
Rest there
While you can
All the pain is gone,
No more
Days like these,
Amen
Hey,
Everybody
Look away from the screen
Look away while Amy floats downstream
Hey,
Everybody
Look away from the screen
She is proud, she is bright,
She is loud, she's a dancer in the night,
She is faithful and strong
And I know that the flame burns on...
There is no feeling better than this
There is no way to get higher.
There's a flame burning deep in my soul
And my whole body's on fire,
And the flame burns on...
She is warm, she is sane,
She's a storm, she's a dancer in the rain
But she likes to belong
And she knows that the flame burns on...
There is no feeling better than this
There is no way to get higher.
There's a flame burning deep in my soul
And my whole body's on fire,
And the flame burns on...
There is no feeling better than this
There is no way to get higher.
There's a flame burning deep in my soul
And my whole body's on fire,
And the flame burns on...
How can I think I'm standing strong
Yet feel the air beneath my feet?
How can happiness feel so wrong?
How can misery feel so sweet?
How can you let me watch you sleep
Then break my dreams the way you do?
How can I have got in so deep?
Why did I fall in love with you?
CHORUS:
This is the closest thing to crazy I have ever been
Feeling twenty-two, acting seventeen
This is the nearest thing to crazy I have ever known
I was never crazy on my own
And now I know that there's a link between the two
Being close to craziness and being close to you
How can you make me fall apart
Then break my fall with loving lies?
It's so easy to break a heart
It's so easy to close your eyes
How can you treat me like a child
Yet like a child I yearn for you?
How can anyone feel so wild?
How can anyone feel so blue?
[CHORUS]
And being close to you
Why did this despolation pick on me tonight?
Why does this friendly room
Seem like a tomb without you?
You were my inspiration, you were my guiding light
You were the one I knew would see me through...
Who was the fool who said that only women bleed?
Cause I am the fool who knows it isnt true;
Who was the fool who said that love is all you need?
Ive got love but its no good to me
Cause its love for you.
In my imagination I still see you here,
And in this empty place I see your face beside me.
Youre my hallucination, soon to dissapear,
Only the pain I feel is there for real...
Who was the fool who said that only women bleed?
Cause I am the fool who knows it isnt true;
Who was the fool who said that love is all you need?
Ive got love but its no good to me
Cause its love for you.
(Instrumental solo)
Who was the fool who said that only women bleed?
Cause I am the fool who knows it isnt true;
Who was the fool who said that love is all you need?
Ive got love but its no good to me
Mother 210:
Dear Colleague,
I am so very sorry that my son has made such an exhibition of himself with your daughter. It really does seem quite out of character for him, although I have to admit that he’s always been a funny boy. Of course, he’s really got into trouble with the Supervisors, but I’m afraid he’s only got himself to blame.
I’ve been worrying myself silly, as I’m sure you’ll understand. I just wanted to send you a short communication to apologise and I can assure you that it will not happen again.
Judge 444:
This court recognises the findings of the Inner Bureau of Medical Affairs, in that there is clearly a need for emotional decontamination and mental correction. We therefore assign the subject to emotional decontamination centre Zero Zero or System six zero five, until such time as this affliction has been completely subdued.
Mother 210:
I don’t understand why she’d want to go up there in the first place. I mean, why bother getting involved? She’s some sort of scientist isn’t she? I suppose that’s the reason.
Why won’t they let him come out? He’s not a criminal, is he? Anyone would think he was some kind of specimen.
Neurosurgeon 463:
They tell me that she's alright in Warsaw,
But I don't believe anything they say.
I remember some crazy nights in Warsaw,
And it only seems like yesterday.
We tried to break away.
In Warsaw, a heart is breaking,
And now there's nothing that we can do,
In Warsaw, she will be waiting,
But I can't go back again,
To Warsaw.
We knew at the start that it wouldn't be easy,
But we didn't think it would be so bad.
She gave up her heart and soul just to please me,
And I gave her everything I had.
Everything I had.
In Warsaw, a heart is breaking,
And now there's nothing that we can do,
In Warsaw, she will be waiting,
But I can't go back again,
To Warsaw.
(Instrumental break)
In Warsaw, a heart is breaking,
And now there's nothing that we can do,
In Warsaw, she will be waiting,
But I can't go back again,
To Warsaw.
Warsaw, Warsaw,
In the cool light of the dawn when the sky wakes and the sun shines on the boulevard,
In the town where I was born I am sitting thinking about you, wondering where you are.
Darling, I got the sun but when it shines I know I need you.
So baby get down (Get down, get down to the Summertime City.)
Come on down to the Summertime City.
Baby get down. (Get down, to the Summertime City.)
Come on down to the Summertime Sound.
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on,
Kick off your shoes 'cos Summertime City, ain't got the summertime blues.
I was lying alone on the beach with the warm sound of the sea moving behind me.
But I knew you were out of reach and it seemed the sun was shining just to remind me.
Baby, without you, you know it might as well be raining.
Baby get down (Get down, get down to the Summertime City.)
Summertime City, ain't got the summertime blues.
Summertime City, ain't got the summertime blues.
I feel like I’m waiting for something to begin.
Something inside me is waking.
It won’t give in…
Now the sweat begins to sting.
Now the bell begins to ring…
I’m on fire but I see no flame.
I perspire but I feel no pain…
I’m weakening with a strange disease,
Seeing things that nobody sees.
The early light is breaking
The morning sun is waiting in the sky
And I think I'm gonna break away
And follow where the birds of freedom fly
I need to give
I need to live
For the world is slowly turning
And the lights of love are burning
In my eyes
Caravans
Oh, my soul is on the run
Overland
I am flying
Caravans
moving out into the sun
Oh, I don't know where I'm going
But I'm going
Caravans
Oh, my soul is on the run
Overland
I am flying
Caravans
moving out into the sun
Oh, I don't know where I'm going
I was born number 17,
Romeo Delta 59,
System 605,
Unit 91.
But you can call me Ralph;
My friends do.
And you can come and meet my mother,
Any day you like,
On system 605,
Unit 91.
She cooks a mean hamburger,
She learned from a leaflet,
Better than the kind that you get from a take-away.
She cooks a mean hamburger,
She learned from a leaflet,
Better than the kind that you get from a take-away.
I was born number 17,
Romeo Delta 59,
System 605,
I know that you’re with him just now as I write
I know you need someone to hold you at night
But I’m begging you, baby
Please don’t fall in love
I knew it might happen when I was away
And now that it’s happened, I just want to say
That I’m begging you, baby
Please don’t fall in love
I’m usually strong but I’m feeling so weak
It wells up inside me, I cry when I speak
But the more I call you on the phone
The more I feel alone
And the less we have to say
I know that you’re with him just now as I write
I know you need someone to hold you at night
But I’m begging you, baby
Please don’t fall in love
I knew it might happen when I was away
And now that it’s happened, I just want to say
That I’m begging you, baby
Please don’t fall in love
We kissed at the airport, we said we could wait
I believe it is we who determine our fate
And I love you more than I can say
Don’t throw it all away
Don’t let it go by
I know that you’re with him just now as I write
I know you need someone to hold you at night
But I’m begging you, baby
Please don’t fall in love
I know you dont tell me, to spare me the pain
Don’t want you to tell me, I don’t need his name
That I’m begging you, baby
Mother 210:
I have to tell you, that since the operation,
number 17 has been quite like his old self.
Restored to his former psychological equilibrium,
one might say!
Pity about number thirty-six though.
I mean that she should have become
contaminated like that. Poor girl.
Probably didn’t understand how awful the disease was.
It seemed to have infected very badly.
She keeps trying to talk to number seventeen,
but I’ve told him to take no notice.
Song:
There are no lights in my eyes,
They don’t shine in the night for you.
I don’t feel right with you my friend,
This is the end of the line.
Look, but don’t touch me again,
There’s no smile on my face for you.
I have no space for you my friend,
This is a waste of my time.
There are no lights in my eyes,
They don’t shine in the night for you.
There are no lights in my eyes,
They don’t shine in the night for you.
There are no lights in my eyes,
They don’t shine in the night for you.
There are no lights in my eyes,
The stories we could tell
God knows what we've both been through
You caught me when I fell
The same as I did for you
Don't let the wild winds blow out the flame
It won't ever be the same
Into the sunset once again together
After the darkness and the rain
Into the sunset we could ride forever
There goes that dream again
The dangers that we face
Are great if we let them be
No army could replace
The strength that you give to me
Don't let the wild woods lead us astray
And don't let us lose our way
Into the sunset once again together
After the darkness and and the rain
Into the sunset we could ride forever
There goes that dream again
Into the sunset once again together
After the darkness and and the rain
Into the sunset we could ride forever
There's an eagle in the eastern sky, turning in the wind;
Out across the evening, resting on the wing.
If I had the wings of an eagle
There'd be no holding me
I'd be free
Sailing free.
One day soon I'm gonna run like the wind,
One day soon
Gonna break away from everything
One day soon
Nothing in the world's gonna pull me back
And nothing's gonna keep me in
Gonna run like the wind.
And if you should tell me you want to hold me down,
Before the glow of morning, I'll be gone without a sound.
The more you try to keep me in
The less you will succeed
Sailing free,
Sailing free.
One day soon I'm gonna run like the wind,
One day soon
Gonna break away from everything
One day soon
Nothing in the world's gonna pull me back
And nothing's gonna keep me in
Gonna run like the wind.
One day soon I'm gonna run like the wind,
One day soon
Gonna break away from everything
One day soon
Nothing in the world's gonna pull me back
And nothing's gonna keep me in

I'm waiting for an answer,
Portishead Radio, Portishead Radio,
Get me my girl on the line.
Portishead Radio, Portishead Radio,
The nights are colder now
Maybe I should close the door
And anyway the snow has covered all your footsteps
And I can follow you no more
The fire still burns at night
The memories are warm and clear
But everybody knows
It's hard to be alone this time of year
It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed?
A love that can never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a world-wide scale
We're just another winter's tale
While I stand alone
A bell is ringing far away
I wonder if you're here
I wonder if you're listening
I wonder where you are today
Good luck, I wish you well
For all that wishes may be worth
I hope that love and strength
Are with you for the length
Of your time on earth
It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed?
It's a love that can never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a world-wide scale
We're just another winter's tale
It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed?
It's a love that can never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a world-wide scale
We're just another winter's tale
Is it a kind of dream,
Floating out on the tide,
Following the river of death downstream?
Oh, is it a dream?
There's a fog along the horizon,
A strange glow in the sky.
And nobody seems to know where you go.
And what does it mean?
Oh, is it a dream?
Bright eyes,
Burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes.
Is it a kind of shadow,
Reaching into the night,
Wandering over the hills unseen?
Or is it a dream?
There's a high wind in the trees,
A cold sound in the air.
And nobody ever knows when you go.
And where do you start,
Oh, into the dark?
Bright eyes,
Burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes.
Bright eyes,
Burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
I used to dream myself to somewhere else each night,
I dreamed in colour, 'cause I lived in black and white,
Until I chanced upon this road that led to you,
I could not see, how anything could be...
Better than a dream, stranger than my wild imagination,
If this is a real sensation
It's better than a dream.
Higher than the moon, hazy like a beautiful illusion,
Crazy and in confusion
Supervisor 444:
This young man is clearly a genetic throwback.
He seems to be experiencing primeval urges and feelings which, frankly,
unless we can terminate, will contaminate others, and threaten the entire structure
of our society.
Number 17 (sung):
Sons of the State
Resigned to their fate,
They follow their orders, they don't break laws
Working for the cause.
Like doctors in the dark,
They stab for the heart,
And talking profoundly, stumble numbly on,
Everything is wrong.
Refrain:
Whispering fools,
I seem to be surrounded by
Whispering fools,
I seem to be hounded by
Whispering fools.
Like rats on the run,
They hide from the sun,
They programme themselves to get through every day,
Throw their lives away.
They're cold in the night
Don't know what it's like
To feel anything for someone like I do
When I think of you.

The smoke was slowly rising as the light began to fade,
There were fires on the skyline from some distant border raid.
And I was riding out at seventeen to join my first brigade
Many years ago.
And I chanced upon a farmhouse where the woman took me in,
She gave me food and wine; she gave me shelter from the wind.
She delayed me from my regiment, and service of my king
Many years ago.
She said:
"Soldier, before I lose you to the fight,
Oh my soldier, I'll make a man of you tonight."
She took me over
In the fading fire-glow,
On that wild and misty night she was my woman.
And when I rose next morning I was gone before she stirred,
I tore myself away from there and left without a word.
The sound of distant infantry was the only thing I heared
On that morning.
And in that day I aged ten years and died a thousand deaths,
I learned the feel of frozen steel and fear within my breast.
But the lesson I'll remember till they lay me to my rest
Keeps returning.
Soldier, before I lose you to the fight,
Oh my soldier, I'll make a man of you tonight.
She took me over
In the fading fire-glow,
On that wild and misty night she was my woman.
And when the dice of war were thrown and victory was won,
My drunken young compatriots went out to have their fun.
And there was no single house they did not burn or over-run,
On that evening.
So I rode out to that place again as hard as I could ride,
But I found her by the trail along the lonely mountainside.
In the hands of those brave friends of mine she suffered and she died,
Many years ago.
Soldier, before I lose you to the fight,
Oh my soldier, I'll make a man of you tonight.
She took me over
In the fading fire-glow,
And she played the harmonium down by the sea,
Singing, "God save the USA and God save me",
And though God never had, she believed him to be
On his way.
She had lived out in Paris before Paris fell,
Singing, "When will I hear again from Jean-Michel?"
And she prayed for his soul and she hoped he was well."
Anyway.
Hold on, for the sailing ships from Heaven won't be long.
Play on, till the sailing ships from Heaven come along.
And she laughed, "Don't be sad like the boys in the trees;
They're only waiting for the world to freeze."
She said, "When they were young they went down on their knees
For my love."
Hold on, for the sailing ships from Heaven won't be long.
Play on, till the sailing ships from Heaven come along.
And she walked on the beach in the wind and the rain,
Singing, "Why don't you ask me why I feel no pain?
And the reason that keeps me from going insane?
-- It's my love."
Hold on, for the sailing ships from Heaven won't be long.
Play on, till the sailing ships from Heaven come along.
Hold on, for the sailing ships from Heaven won't be long.
Play on, till the sailing ships from Heaven come along.
Hold on, for the sailing ships from Heaven won't be long.
