Buses outside Chiswick Works in 1981
London Transport used to have a large works facility in Chiswick. Though its use varied over the years, it was usually a good place to visit on the off chance some of their more exotic vehicles would put in an appearance. However, by 1981 most of the activity would seem to involve Learner Driver Training. Now, what could be more intimidating to the novice driver than to have some bloke with a video camera standing opposite the front gate as, under the gaze of the instructor, they anxiously edged their way out onto the Chiswick High Road? For anyone who doesn't understand any of the advantages of the rear platform bus, at 5:30 take note of the Routemaster pulling up at the stop. Someone gets off in an apparently leisurely fashion but, look again, did the bus actually come to a halt? And, of course, one can get on and off these vehicles between stops if it is more convenient. This type of vehicle is so much more suited to the busy urban environment than the tediously slow loading/unloading front entrance vehicles. Since then there has been significant redevelopment in the area. Chiswick High Road
Chiswick is a large suburb of west London, England and part of the London Borough of Hounslow. It is located on a meander of the River Thames, 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Charing Cross and is one of 35 major centres identified in the London Plan. It was historically an ancient parish in the county of Middlesex, with an agrarian and fishing economy. Having good communications with London from an early time the area became a popular country retreat, and as part of the suburban growth of London in the late 19th and early 20th centuries the population of Chiswick significantly expanded. With neighbouring Brentford, it became a municipal borough in 1932 and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. From the 18th century onwards the High Road became built up with inns and large houses. Today the High Road is a busy shopping street with many cafes, restaurants and several 19th century public houses. Chiswick High Road contains a mix of retail, restaurants, food outlets and expanding office and hotel space. The wide streets encourage cafes and restaurants to provide pavement seating. Two steam engines just minutes apart at Chiswick station on a wild, wet and windy June evening. 34067 Tangmere hauling The Swanage Belle back to London Victoria was non stopping. It was followed by a regular Hounslow Loop service heading towards Waterloo. And then by Bittern 4464 hauling The Cathedrals Express back from Minehead to Victoria, stopping at Chiswick to set down a few passengers. Not the greatest quality video but I hope it gives a taste of the atmosphere.

34067 'Tangmere' & 4464 'Bittern' at Chiswick Station, 15/08/12.
Since the Olympic Steam Ban has been lifted, The Railway Touring Company and Steam Dreams wasted no time in operating steam hauled tours. The 15th August 2012 saw no less than 3 steam railtours operate, with 2 of them within an hour of each other in the London Area. First clip in this video is of the RTC Dorest Coast Express service from London Victoria to Weymouth with original streamlined Battle of Britian 34067 Tangmere at the realms storming past Kew New (South) Junction in Chiswick Village. Just under an hour later LNER streamlined A4 4464 Bittern makes a short stop at Chiswick Station (Grove Park) to pick only six passengers for the SD's Cathedrals Express also bound for Weymouth via Yeovil. Alot of people have been interested why Steam Dreams are now using Chiswick as a pick up/drop off station and this is because Steam Dreams are unable to use Clapham Junction and/or Reading as a stop and to keep with timetabling they make an additional stop at Chiswick or Brentford both of which can accept 11/12 coach trains.
