Statistics 101: Simple Linear Regression (Part 1), The Very Basics
This is the first video in what will be, or is (depending on when you are watching this) a multipart video series about Simple Linear Regression. In the next few minutes we will cover the basics of Simple Linear Regression starting at square one. And for the record, from now on if I say "regression" I am referring to simple linear regression as opposed to multiple regression or models that are not linear. Regression allows us to model, mathematically, the relationship between two or more variables. For now, we will be working with just two variables; an independent variable and a dependent variable. The truth is, when we talk about how "good" a regression model is we are actually comparing it to another specific model. Oftentimes, students do not realize this. So in this video, we are going to talk about that idea. I will also begin introducing basic terminology and concepts that will carry you through your work using regression. There are no formulas or calculations in this video. We are just introducing the underlying meaning behind "good" regression models. So if you are new to Regression or are still trying to figure out exactly what it even IS...this video is for you. So sit back, relax, and let's go ahead and get to work. Statistics 101: Simple Linear Regression (Part 3), The Least Squares Method
So this video is the next in our series about Simple Linear Regression. In our last two videos, we talked about the very basics of regression and introduced other basic concepts like the algebra of lines and general patterns to look for on a scatterplot. In this video, we are going to learn about the fundamental concept in linear regression; the Least Squares Method. We will talk about how the Least Squares Method relates to previous concepts we have learned and then we will actually use the method to calculate the least squares line, or the regression line. This video will involve formulas and simple calculations. While you may not have to find a simple regression line by hand very often, it is not that difficult to do, and this video will at least show you how it is done so you understand the underlying mechanics. If you are new to Regression or are still trying to figure out exactly what it even IS...this video is for you. So sit back, relax, and let's go ahead and get to work. Statistics 101: Simple Linear Regression (Part 2), Algebra, Equations, and Patterns
So this video the next in our series about Simple Linear Regression. In our last video, we talked about the very basics of regression. First we discussed what residuals are. Then we learned about the sum of squares of the residuals. Lastly, we talked about how a regression model is actually a comparison to a special model where the independent variable does not even exist and we just use the mean of the dependent variable. In this video, we are going to talk about some of the nuts and bolts of regression. I will introduce some basic terminology and concepts that will carry you through your work using regression. We will talk about how regression is related to the algebra of lines and discuss general patterns to look for on scatterplots. There are no formulas or calculations in this video. The goal is to help better prepare you for interpreting regression analysis when it is performed. So if you are new to Regression or are still trying to figure out exactly what it even IS...this video is for you. Sit back, relax, and let's go ahead and get to work. Statistics 101: Simple Linear Regression (Part 4), Fit and the Coefficient of Determination
So this video is the next in our series about Simple Linear Regression. In our last three videos, we talked about the very basics of regression and introduced other fundamental concepts like the algebra of lines, general patterns to look for on a scatter-plot, and the least squares method. In this video, we are going to learn to evaluate how well a regression line fits the data it models. It is important to note that a regression model is unique to the data it represents. Adding or changing data points will most certainly change the regression model. The model is also only valid for the range of data points under analysis. It is not proper to extrapolate above or below the data being evaluated. So once a regression line is calculated, how much better is it than using only the mean of the dependent variable alone? To answer that question we will have to calculate the sum of the squared residuals (or errors) much like we did in the previous video; however this time we will do so using the regression line, not the dependent variable mean line. And finally, we will be able to quantify the "fit" of the regression model using a simple ratio or percentage, called the coefficient of determination. If you are new to Regression or are still trying to figure out exactly what it even IS...this video is for you. So sit back, relax, and let's go ahead and get to learning!
