A Small Scale Integrated Livestock Farm
Husband and wife team, farmers Mike Guebert and Linda Bangs live on 10 acres of land, raising and tending to a variety of livestock. Currently, they have 2 Jersey cows, and 40 goats that provide raw milk; about 250 laying chicken hens for eggs, and 800 chickens for (meat) broilers; and 5 turkeys: 4 hens, and one happy tom. Oh yes, and not to forget, 2 heritage breed pigs, and just the day before we arrived this spring (2012), they picked up 14 wiener pigs.
This is a snapshot moment of life on their farm, and their story.

New dog!!! - Meet our Livestock Guardian
Today she's making her internet debut! This big girl works tirelessly to make sure her sheep are safe. No one gets into the yard without her approval- coyotes beware!
She's a full-time outside dog and I sleep better at night knowing she's patrolling the property. At only 6 months old I watched her during early morning hours run a coyote out of the yard and let me tell you that coyote was lucky he was quick about!
She came from a breeder specializing in raising dogs for Livestock guarding. She was born with sheep and spent the first 4 months of her life learning the ropes at her breeder's sheep ranch before she came to me. Thousands of years of instinct let her know exactly what to do! Dasher and Edie couldn't ask for a better body guard.
Now if only I could come up with a name for her!
About the breed...
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a breed of dog which originated in Anatolia (central Turkey) and was further developed as a breed in America. With acute hearing, exceptional eyesight, and the strength to take down wolves, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a superb guardian of his flock. This is a serious dog, devoted to its family and its duty as family protector. It is suspicious of strangers and is territorial. The Anatolian was developed to be independent and forceful, responsible for guarding its master's flocks without human assistance or direction. The Anatolian is a muscular breed. Males stand 26 - 31 inches. Females are between 27 to 30 inches. They weigh between 90 and 150 pounds.

Nuclear No-go Zone Shepherd Protects Livestock from Cull
Two years after Japan's worst nuclear disaster, a lone resident of the nuclear exclusion zone remains behind to protect abandoned livestock and pets, many which are gradually turning wild.
Full story:
Two years from the meltdown at Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Naoto Matsumura continues his daily routine of caring for his flock of animals. With one major difference.
Matsumura now lives alone inside of the nuclear exclusion zone with his 50 cows and 2 ostriches, after the disaster forced about 160,000 people to flee their homes.
Before the nuclear meltdown there were thousands of cows in the area that would become the nuclear no-go zone. Of these only 700-800 have since been captured by government officials, and hundreds were marked as having gone wild.
Matsumura has made it his mission to take care of those animals left behind, even if they no can longer be brought to market due to their exposure to high levels of nuclear radiation.
[Naoto Matsumura, Livestock Farmer]:
"For now, I just want to save the lives of those pets and animals who were left behind. If I can help the town itself recover then even better."
In addition to his flock of cows, he also keeps two female ostriches in his front yard. But Matsumura worries that as people have been evacuated and as the recovery and cleanup looks to take years, that people will forget that the zone itself even exists.
[Naoto Matsumura, Livestock Farmer]:
"The nuclear exclusion zone is being forgotten, in people's minds it's fading away and is already over and dealt with. So it's my job to tell everyone that it's still here. If it's forgotten then the nuclear reactors could indeed start up again."
Living only a few kilometers from the tsunami-ravaged plant itself, Matsumura drives around the empty nuclear wasteland in his two-seater truck looking for stray animals.
As the livestock remaining in the zone is no longer fit for consumption, the Japanese environmental ministry has been culling the animals that remain. But Matsumura heads out to stop the culls whenever he can.
He jokes that the cows in his flock, while contaminated, are now quite happy as they won't be end up as steaks.Matsumura says that he himself plans to keep on living inside of the zone.
And with Tokyo Electric saying that it will take another 30 to 40 years to scrap the reactors, he holds no illusions as to how long it will take for others to return.

HIMBA - Ethnic Group (Namibia)
The Himba are an ethnic group of about 20,000 to 50,000 people living in northern Namibia, in the Kunene region (formerly Kaokoland). They are a nomadic, pastoral people, closely related to the Herero, and speak Otjihimba, a dialect of the Herero language.
The Himba breed cattle and goats. The responsibility of milking the cows lies with the women. Women take care of the children, and one woman will take care of another woman's children. Women tend to perform more labor-intensive work than men do, such as carrying water to the village and building homes. Men handle the political tasks and legal trials.
Members of an extended family typically dwell in a homestead, "a small, circular hamlet of huts and work shelters" that surrounds "an okuruwo (ancestral fire) and a central livestock enclosure." Both the fire and the livestock are closely tied to their belief in ancestor worship, the fire representing ancestral protection and the livestock allowing "proper relations between human and ancestor."
The Himba wear little clothing, but the women are famous for covering themselves with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre, possibly to protect themselves from the sun. The mixture gives their skins a reddish tinge. This symbolizes earth's rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life, and is consistent with the Himba ideal of beauty. Women braid each other's hair and cover it in their ochre mixture.
The Himba never wash, even after childbirth. In order to get rid of body odour, they apply strong-smelling substances to their bodies. They do not wash their hands either - instead they use specific dust to clean their hands.
Modern clothes are scarce, but generally go to the men when available. Traditionally both men and women go topless and wear skirts or loincloths made of animal skins in various colors. Adult women wear beaded anklets to protect their legs from venomous animal bites.
Boys are generally circumcised before puberty, to make them eligible for marriage. Marriages are arranged at a daughter's birth and usually take place when the girl is between about 14 and 17.

Reporters - Drought threatens French livestock farmers
Reporters - In the Charente region, as in most of France, farmers were scanning the skies this spring for rain that never came. This year, the water shortage was catastrophic and livestock farmers have been reduced to buying expensive feed for their cattle. Some are being forced to dispose of their livestock as fast as possible, and the worst-affected even risk bankruptcy.
