Brian's thoughts on the Trident nuclear missile system
Brian is an American-born veteran of the peace movement who has lived in Scotland for twenty years. On the morning of 11th December 2006, he took part in a blockade of the Royal Navy base HMNB Clyde, which is situated at Faslane, on the Gareloch just north of Glasgow. HMNB Clyde is the home port of the UK's nuclear weapons arsenal: four Vanguard-class submarines, each carrying upto sixteen Trident missiles. Each of these missiles contains eight independently-targetable warheads; each one of these warheads has approximately eight times the destructive power of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Brian undertook his action with a number of other activists from Trident Ploughshares, a group which has undertaken campaigns and direct actions against the Trident nuclear missile system since 1998. Brian's action was part of Faslane365, an initiative to blockade HMNB Clyde every day for a year. Blockades will continue until September 2007. The Faslane365 Big Blockade, 1 October 2007
This is a very rough cut I put together in the peace camp from footage shot by Julia Kramer during the Big Blockade. I think it's a pretty effective film, especially given the time we had to put it together, but I'd appreciate your forgiveness for its shortcomings! The soundtrack was sung live by Theo Simon of Seize the Day; given more time I would have cut to him performing, but sadly time was rather limited.

£350m for next generation nuclear subs 29.10.12
An additional £350 million of funding for the next stage of designing the future generation of British nuclear-armed submarines has been announced. This investment will sustain 1200 UK jobs and follows the initial £350 million of design work announced earlier this year, the Ministry of Defence said. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond made the announcement on a visit to the home of the UK's nuclear deterrent at Faslane on the River Clyde in Scotland. Commenting on the Scottish independence debate, the Defence Secretary reiterated the Government's commitment to keep the naval base in Scotland, saying he was "confident" Scottish people would choose to remain part of the UK. He said: "We are confident that the Scottish people will choose to remain part of the United Kingdom. The Faslane complex is the largest employment site in Scotland with over 6500 jobs underpinning the local economy. "We have no plans to move the nuclear deterrent from the Clyde. On the contrary, we intend to move the Astute and Trafalgar Class attack submarines to Faslane, creating a further 1500 jobs. The Scottish Government needs to explain how their policy would benefit Scotland's economy and safeguard Scottish jobs."
