Somalia: Child Soldiers
www.hrw.org Somalia: Warring Parties Put Children at Grave Risk Al-Shabaab Rebels Impose Forced Marriages, use Students as 'Human Shields' (London, February 21, 2012) -- Somalia's warring parties have all failed to protect Somali children from the fighting or serving in their forces, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The Islamist insurgent group al-Shabaab has increasingly targeted children for recruitment, forced marriage, and rape, and attacked teachers and schools, Human Rights Watch said. "For children in Somalia, nowhere is safe," said Zama Coursen-Neff, deputy children's rights director at Human Rights Watch. "Al-Shabaab rebels have abducted children from their homes and schools to fight, for rape, and for forced marriage." The 104-page report, "No Place for Children: Child Recruitment, Forced Marriage, and Attacks on Schools in Somalia," details unlawful recruitment and other laws-of-war violations against children by all parties to the conflict in Somalia since 2010. The report is based on over 164 interviews with Somali children, including 21 who had escaped from al-Shabaab forces, as well as parents and teachers who had fled to Kenya. Human Rights Watch called on all parties to the conflict, involving Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and African Union forces (AMISOM) against al-Shabaab, to release any child soldiers in their ranks, protect children formerly associated with fighting forces, and protect schools, teachers, and ...

Inside a Drug Detention Center
www.hrw.org The Somsanga Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Laos has received a decade of international support from the United States, the United Nations, and other donors. But inside the center, detainees are held without due process, and many are locked in cells inside barbed wire compounds. Syria: Dispatches from Daraa
www.hrw.org Syrian authorities have tried to keep the world from getting images or information from the Southern city of Daraa, the scene of a massive government crackdown against protesters. But Syrians have documented abuses with cellphones and cameras and made footage available to Human Rights Watch. This video, narrated by HRW's Nadim Houry, gives a glimpse of what the people of Daraa have endured since protests began there in March. Read the report, "We've Never Seen Such Horror" www.hrw.org

Amore mio - Hrw Gigi d' Alessio - Lyrics

Ripe with Abuse
www.hrw.org The fruits and wine that come from the Western Cape of South Africa are enjoyed by consumers around the world and generate billions of rand for South Africa's economy, yet the farmworkers who help produce these goods are denied basic human rights. The government of South Africa should take immediate steps to improve the working and housing conditions of the farmers who help produce its renowned wines and fruit.

Lead Poisoning and Gold
Not long after Human Rights Watch released this video, Nigeria's federal Minister of the Environment received presidential sign-off on more than US$4 million in funding for for environmental remediation and safer mining in Zamfara state. www.hrw.org Since 2010 ongoing, widespread, acute lead poisoning in Zamfara state has killed at least 500 children. Considered the worst outbreak of lead poisoning in modern history, more than 3500 affected children require urgent, life-saving treatment. Less than half are receiving it. Among adults there are high rates of infertility and miscarriage. Zamfara is a mineral-rich state, with significant deposits of gold. The acute lead poisoning in Zamfara is a result of artisanal gold mining: small scale mining done with rudimentary tools. Miners crush and grind ore to extract gold, and in the process release dust that is highly contaminated with lead. Children in affected areas are exposed to this dust when they are laboring in the processing site, when their relatives return home covered with the dust on their clothes and hands, and when the processing occurs in their home. Children are also exposed to this highly toxic lead in contaminated water and food sources.

To Protect & Serve: Police Brutality in India
Visit www.hrw.org For decades, successive governments in India have failed to deliver on promises to hold the police accountable for human rights violations including arbitrary arrest and detention, torture and extrajudicial killings. The Indian government should take major steps to build professional, rights-respecting police forces and overhaul a policing system that facilitates and even encourages human rights abuse.
