D.M. Jayaratne is the Prime Minister of the new Government. He took his oaths today as the countrys 14th Prime Minister.
The swearing-in took place at Temple Trees. He took oaths before President Rajapaksa. Many peoples representatives of the Government group including Ratnasiri Wickramanayake were present on this occasion. The Ven. Ellawala Medananda thera and Presidents Secretary Lalith Weeratunga were among those who participated. All of them extended their greetings to the new Prime Minister.
D.M. Jayaratne was born on 4th June 1931. He had his preliminary education in the village temple and a primary school at Doluwa in Gampola. Thereafter, he had his secondary education at Zahira College in Gampola and joined the Gandhi Vidyalaya in Kandy for his higher studies. In 1950, he joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party launched by S.W.RD Bandaranaike and became the 13th member of the party.
In the year 1959, he contested two seats in Doluwa and Ambakumbura in the Village Council and was elected a member. It was in 1965 that he was elected as the President of the Kandy district Village Councilors Association. Mr. Jayaratne became the prospective candidate to contest the 1970 Parliamentary election under the SLFP and was elected for the first time to the legislature from the Gampola Constituency. Thereafter, he had served in several Ministerial portfolios including Lands, Agriculture, Forest Resources, Food and Cooperatives, Posts and Telecommunications, Rural Economic Development and Plantation Industries.
The Ambuluwawa Bio Diversity Centre was launched in the Gampola area to attract tourists, based on a concept of Mr. Jayaratne. It is the belief of the people that Mr. Jayaratne will be a great strength to make Sri Lanka the miracle of Asia through the vast experience and knowledge he has gained during his 40-year service in Parliament. ITN extends its greetings to the new Prime Minister.

Reconstruction of Asgiriya Maha Vihare with 100 million rupees

One hundred million rupees is allocated for the reconstruction of the Asgiriya Maha Vihare.
The Reconstruction programme is in place marking the 700th year of the Asgiriya Vihare. Sri Lanka will be providing the expertise and labour contribution. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne handed over a cheque for 20 million rupees to the Navy Commander Vice Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayake. The event took place at the Prime Minister's official residence.
Expressing his views on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the Government has taken all necessary initiatives for the development of all temples in the country under the guidance of the President. Secretary to the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs Cashian Herath was among those present at this event.
