France's magnificent Cluny Abbey was founded in 910 AD on a hunting preserve owned by the Duke of Aquitaine. At its height, Cluny Abbey was the greatest monastic order in the Western world; four of the order's abbots became popes, including Urban II.

En uno de sus dominios de la región de Borgoña, el duque Guillermo de Aquitania fundó en el siglo X el monasterio de Cluny, desde donde se promoverá una nueva concepción de la vida religiosa, inspirada en la regla benedictina. Cluny se convertirá en la casa madre de unas 1.500 abadías.
La distribución que tenía en el monasterio en el siglo XII tiene como base el plano de Saint Gall, del siglo IX. El centro de la vida monástica era la gran iglesia, una de las más grandes del mundo cristiano, con cinco naves, dos transeptos y un gran ábside en la cabecera.
A los pies del templo se hallaba los establos, un edificio en forma de L que tenía a continuación la fábrica de conservas y las letrinas.
El claustro y la sala capitular eran los otros centros de la vida en el monasterio. Alrededor del claustro estaba el refectorio, los dormitorios, la cocina y almacén y la panadería. Más alejado del conjunto monástico se encontraban el hospital y la hospedería.
Durante la Revolución Francesa se destruyeron la mayoría de los edificios monásticos ya que para los ilustrados, Cluny suponía un símbolo del poder eclesiástico. Sólo se conserva en pie parte del brazo sur del transepto. --

- la reprise du jardin médiéval et l’optimisation de l’insertion urbaine à l’horizon 2020.

Cluny 4 includes 4 parts:
- the restoration of structures: the chapel of the hotel of Cluny in 2015-2016 and the Gallo-Roman baths in 2016-2017;
- the construction of a new reception area to be inaugurated by the end of 2017;
- the redesign of the visitor’s itinerary, the first part of which will be introduced at the same time as the new reception, while the second part is expected to be completed in 2020;
- reworking the medieval garden and optimising urban integration until 2020.

Cluny or Clungy is a commune in the Saône-et-Loire department in the region of Bourgogne in eastern France. It is 20 km northwest of Mâcon.
The town grew up around the Benedictine Cluny Abbey, founded by Duke William I of Aquitaine in 910. The height of Cluniac influence was from the second half of the 10th century through the early 12th.
The abbey was sacked by the Huguenots in 1562 and many of the valuable manuscripts were destroyed or removed.
The river Grosne flows northward through the commune and crosses the town.

En uno de sus dominios de la región de Borgoña, el duque Guillermo de Aquitania fundó en el siglo X el monasterio de Cluny, desde donde se promoverá una nueva concepción de la vida religiosa, inspirada en la regla benedictina. Cluny se convertirá en la casa madre de unas 1.500 abadías.
La distribución que tenía en el monasterio en el siglo XII tiene como base el plano de Saint Gall, del siglo IX. El centro de la vida monástica era la gran iglesia, una de las más grandes del mundo cristiano, con cinco naves, dos transeptos y un gran ábside en la cabecera.
A los pies del templo se hallaba los establos, un edificio en forma de L que tenía a continuación la fábrica de conservas y las letrinas.
El claustro y la sala capitular eran los otros centros de la vida en el monasterio. Alrededor del claustro estaba el refectorio, los dormitorios, la cocina y almacén y la panadería. Más alejado del conjunto monástico se encontraban el hospital y la hospedería.
Durante la Revolución Francesa se destruyeron la mayoría de los edificios monásticos ya que para los ilustrados, Cluny suponía un símbolo del poder eclesiástico. Sólo se conserva en pie parte del brazo sur del transepto. --

1- L'abbaye de Cluny.
En août 2011, après mon séjour en Roumanie, où j'ai visité, entre autres lieux, des nombreuses églises fortifiées, me voila à Cluny dans le département de Saône -et- Loire, France, avec l'intention de découvrir les secrets de l'abbaye de Cluny, autrefois fortifiée elle aussi..
Ceci grâce à mes hôtes, Jacqueline et Pierre, qui ont été mes premiers guides.
Dans cette première partie, il sera question de ma découverte de l'abbaye à travers son histoire, et ses vestiges monastiques encore nombreux et en cours de restauration depuis des années. Témoins d'un passé spirituel et économique très important.
En 910, Guillaume, duc d'Aquitaine, signe l'acte autorisant les moines bénédictins de Beaune-les-Messieurs et de Guigny, en Franche-Comté, à fonder une maison de prière sur une de ses terres.
12 moines, placés sur la protection de St Pierre et St Paul, dont on peut voir sculptés ou gravés sur les murs les armes de l'abbaye, (les clés de St Pierre et le glaive de St Paul)
N'étant pas historien, bien que aimant l'histoire en général, j'ai écouté mes guides et lu certains récits sur l'abbaye, ce qui m'a permis de faire ce petit montage avec les images prises lors de ma visite en 2011.
Des images qui racontent l'histoire de l'abbaye de Cluny, de ses origines en 910, à aujourd'hui, en passant par la Révolution de 1789, qui verra la démolition de certains bâtiment monastiques, et la grande église abbatiale qui commença à construire en 1049, le jeune abbé Hugues de Semut, en même temps qu'il renforçait l'œuvre de ses prédécesseurs, et agrandissait la plupart des bâtiments existants.

Certains bâtiments existant, aménages, deviendront, (en 1813), un Aras national, en 1866, l'État installera l'École normale d'Enseignement secondaire; qui deviendra en 1891 l'École pratique d'Ouvriers et de Contremaitres, et finalement l'École nationale d'Arts et Métiers en 1901, qui existe toujours.

1- L'abbaye de Cluny.
En août 2011, après mon séjour en Roumanie, où j'ai visité, entre autres lieux, des nombreuses églises fortifiées, me voila à Cluny dans le département de Saône -et- Loire, France, avec l'intention de découvrir les secrets de l'abbaye de Cluny, autrefois fortifiée elle aussi..
Ceci grâce à mes hôtes, Jacqueline et Pierre, qui ont été mes premiers guides.
Dans cette première partie, il sera question de ma découverte de l'abbaye à travers son histoire, et ses vestiges monastiques encore nombreux et en cours de restauration depuis des années. Témoins d'un passé spirituel et économique très important.
En 910, Guillaume, duc d'Aquitaine, signe l'acte autorisant les moines bénédictins de Beaune-les-Messieurs et de Guigny, en Franche-Comté, à fonder une maison de prière sur une de ses terres.
12 moines, placés sur la protection de St Pierre et St Paul, dont on peut voir sculptés ou gravés sur les murs les armes de l'abbaye, (les clés de St Pierre et le glaive de St Paul)
N'étant pas historien, bien que aimant l'histoire en général, j'ai écouté mes guides et lu certains récits sur l'abbaye, ce qui m'a permis de faire ce petit montage avec les images prises lors de ma visite en 2011.
Des images qui racontent l'histoire de l'abbaye de Cluny, de ses origines en 910, à aujourd'hui, en passant par la Révolution de 1789, qui verra la démolition de certains bâtiment monastiques, et la grande église abbatiale qui commença à construire en 1049, le jeune abbé Hugues de Semut, en même temps qu'il renforçait l'œuvre de ses prédécesseurs, et agrandissait la plupart des bâtiments existants.

The Musee de Cluny in Paris is Huge
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com There were a few adult tour groups in the Musee de Cluny but even more school groups ranging in age from 8 years to teens parading through the exhibits. Especially in the rotunda of the Lady and the Unicorn (Room 13). There are six tapestries. A stunning example of "millefleurs" style, illustrating the five senses along with a sixth sense. That of love and understanding. The children on tour were so interested in us and one little boy shouted out as he walked by (in English)..."When is your birthday?" Of all things. A person could spend all day inside this very engrossing museum but we had miles more to walk in Paris today. -

Especially in the rotunda of the Lady and the Unicorn (Room 13). There are six tapestries. A stunning example of "millefleurs" style, illustrating the five senses along with a sixth sense. That of love and understanding.
The children on tour were so interested in us and one little boy shouted out as he walked by (in English)..."When is your birthday?" Of all things. A person could spend all day inside this very engrossing museum but we had miles more to walk in Paris today.

The structure was rebuilt by Jacques d'Amboise, abbot in commendam of Cluny 1485-1510; it combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. In 1843, it was made into a public museum, to hold relics of France's Gothic past preserved in the building by Alexandre du Sommerard.
Though it no longer possesses anything originally connected with the abbey of Cluny, the hôtel was at first part of a larger Cluniac complex that also included a building (no longer standing) for a religious college in the Place de la Sorbonne, just south of the present day Hôtel de Cluny along Boulevard Saint-Michel. Although originally intended for the use of the Cluny abbots, the residence was taken over by Jacques d'Amboise, Bishop of Clermont and Abbot of Jumièges, and rebuilt to its present form in the period of 1485-1500. Occupants of the house over the years have included Mary Tudor, the sister of Henry VIII of England. She resided here in 1515 after the death of her husband Louis XII, whose successor, Francis I, kept her under surveillance, particularly to see if she was pregnant.[citation needed] Seventeenth-century occupants included several papal nuncios, including Mazarin.
In the 18th century, the tower of the Hôtel de Cluny was used as an observatory by the astronomer Charles Messier who, in 1771, published his observations in the landmark Messier catalog. In 1789, the hôtel was confiscated by the state, and for the next three decades served several functions. At one point, it was owned by a physician who used the magnificent Flamboyant chapel on the first floor as a dissection room.

The garden is bordered by Holland Road and Napier Road to the south, Cluny Road to the east, Tyersall Avenue and Cluny Park Road to the west and Bukit Timah Road to the North. The linear distance between the northern and southern ends is around 2.5 km (1.6 mi). In December 2012, an application for it to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site was made.
