For those who don't know, the power transfer unit (PTU) is a device that transfers hydraulic power from one of an aircraft's hydraulic systems to another, producing a distinctive sound which reminds of a barking dog. It is usually heard by passengers for 4-5 seconds during startup, but since the pilots were troubleshooting a problem with the aircraft's ELAC (Elevator Aileron Computer) the PTU was left on for about 15-20 minutes. It was really awkward for the passengers who were told the problem had to do with the air conditioning. Yet I found it quite funny and started "singing along" or better "barking along" with my friends I was flying with.

Dear Friends and Followers!
What is that barking sound coming from below the cabin floor as soon as we reach the gate position? Have you ever wondered what is going on in the cargo compartment where this very strange noise is coming from. Many people refer to this as the "Airbus Barking Dog Sound".
This strange barking sound emits from the PTU, the Power Transfer Unit which is a substantial part of the Airbus hydraulic system. I explain in further detail when the PTU is being operated and it´s purpose.
Now the Airbus A320 hydraulics consist of three independent system, named in colours, green, blue and yellow and one of their highest priorities is to pressure the actuators to move the flight controls.
the green system is powered by an engine driven hydraulic pump, engine number 1, so in flying direction the engine to your left hand side and the yellow system is powered by engine number 2 but can also be powered by an electric backup pump.
The blue system is powered by an electric pump only but isn´t associated with the PTU. It does, however, have its own unique backup mechanism, the Ram Air Turbine, but that´s a whole another video.
So imagine the PTU as a reversible motor pump located between the green and yellow systems. Hydraulic fluid from either system can drive the pump to pressurise the other hydraulic system. But the fluids only drive the pump so the remain isolated from each other, meaning they don´t mix
Each hydraulic system normally operates at 3000psi and if the difference between the green and yellow system exceeds 500psi, the system energises the PTU to pressurise the low system. In other words, the green or yellow hydraulic pump has failed and is being pressurised from the other system through the PTU.

Live the unique experience of an interior flight in China! Watch as we pushback from the gate at Hangzhou, start the engines up with some EPIC PTU sounds, and then taxi to the runway for a rather steep takeoff. During the flight, many differences were noticed concerning in-flight service, notably the fact that a hot lunch was served in economy class on a short 2 hour flight! Also, seat numbering in Chinese aircraft is different than European and American aircraft. Anyway, it was an interesting experience, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight!

A320 In Flight Video - Airbus Flight Simulator 2004 - Hydraulic System and PTU
Power Transfer Unit (PTU) When only 1 engine is running, it can provide hydraulic power to the whole system through the Power Transfer Unit. For example, if engine 1 is stopped, the Green hydraulic circuit is not pressurized any more and the hydraulic pressure decreases. When it is lower than a specific threshold, the PTU activates to transfer hydraulic pressure from the Yellow circuit to the Green circuit, allowing all the hydraulic systems to keep working. The PTU generates a very typical sound that the passengers can hear in the cabin.

For those who don't know, the power transfer unit (PTU) is a device that transfers hydraulic power from one of an aircraft's hydraulic systems to another, producing a distinctive sound which reminds of a barking dog. It is usually heard by passengers for 4-5 seconds during startup, but since the pilots were troubleshooting a problem with the aircraft's ELAC (Elevator Aileron Computer) the PTU was left on for about 15-20 minutes. It was really awkward for the passengers who were told the problem had to do with the air conditioning. Yet I found it quite funny and started "singing along" or better "barking along" with my friends I was flying with.

Dear Friends and Followers!
What is that barking sound coming from below the cabin floor as soon as we reach the gate position? Have you ever wondered what is going on in the cargo compartment where this very strange noise is coming from. Many people refer to this as the "Airbus Barking Dog Sound".
This strange barking sound emits from the PTU, the Power Transfer Unit which is a substantial part of the Airbus hydraulic system. I explain in further detail when the PTU is being operated and it´s purpose.
Now the Airbus A320 hydraulics consist of three independent system, named in colours, green, blue and yellow and one of their highest priorities is to pressure the actuators to move the flight controls.
the green system is powered by an engine driven hydraulic pump, engine number 1, so in flying direction the engine to your left hand side and the yellow system is powered by engine number 2 but can also be powered by an electric backup pump.
The blue system is powered by an electric pump only but isn´t associated with the PTU. It does, however, have its own unique backup mechanism, the Ram Air Turbine, but that´s a whole another video.
So imagine the PTU as a reversible motor pump located between the green and yellow systems. Hydraulic fluid from either system can drive the pump to pressurise the other hydraulic system. But the fluids only drive the pump so the remain isolated from each other, meaning they don´t mix
Each hydraulic system normally operates at 3000psi and if the difference between the green and yellow system exceeds 500psi, the system energises the PTU to pressurise the low system. In other words, the green or yellow hydraulic pump has failed and is being pressurised from the other system through the PTU.

Watch as we pushback from the gate at Hangzhou, start the engines up with some EPIC PTU sounds, and then taxi to the runway for a rather steep takeoff. During the flight, many differences were noticed concerning in-flight service, notably the fact that a hot lunch was served in economy class on a short 2 hour flight! Also, seat numbering in Chinese aircraft is different than European and American aircraft. Anyway, it was an interesting experience, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight!

When only 1 engine is running, it can provide hydraulic power to the whole system through the Power Transfer Unit. For example, if engine 1 is stopped, the Green hydraulic circuit is not pressurized any more and the hydraulic pressure decreases. When it is lower than a specific threshold, the PTU activates to transfer
hydraulic pressure from the Yellow circuit to the Green circuit, allowing all the hydraulic systems to keep working.
The PTU generates a very typical sound that the passengers can hear in the cabin.
